Nominations for the 2009 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA)

The African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) is an offshoot of the African Film Academy. The Academy founded on the best film tradition, is geared towards research, training and propagating film making in Africa. Behind it are film producers, directors, designers, writers, critics and scholars who share in the belief of a renaissant African film.
AMAA is thus conceptualized as an annual celebration of the brightest and the best in African movie. It is about class and style, blitz, glitz and razzmatazz. It is the biggest gathering of movie makers across the African continent and the diaspora. It is to show to the world that the rating of Nollywood (Nigeria) as the third largest producers of movie is real.
The 2009 edition of the awards billed to hold in Yenagoa, the capital of the oil-rich but politically volatile Niger Delta state of Bayelsa on April 4 2009.

I like the fact thats it is getting more diverse. Even though Nollywood is the biggest and most popular, a lot of other African movies are higher budget with better quality and haven’t gotten AMAAs in the past so good progress.
I hope the awards ceremony itself is not a drag. The last one I watched had 6 Aba Pound road/ Idumota marketers getting awards and thanking their ‘fans’ in front of Vanessa Williams. Its like Netflicks winning an Oscar. I was like WTheck?
It can only get better, hope Funke wins and Tunde is the best no competition on him in Nigeria

Bella, can your team try to get an interview from Nse Ikpe Etim – she did an amazingly awesome performance in Emem Isong’s latest flick ‘Reloaded’ she deserves the award first for such great acting and secondly for being a newcomer at that.

The No.1 ladies detective agency is not from Botswana. It’s just a series created from a book, and a partnership between HBO and the BBC. It might be about Africa but it is essentially not African…
