Omawumi, Yinka Davies, Timi, Ireti Doyle and other talented stars revive OLURONBI

It is absolutely fantastic to see theatre being revived and refreshed in Nigeria. This weekend, music stars Omawumi, Yinka Davies, Timi Dakolo, Waje, Dokta Frabz, Nikki Laoye and Utibe will join stage veterans Ireti Doyle and Hafiz Oyetoro for a new onstage production of the popular Nigerian folk tale – Oluronbi.
The Musical tells the story of a beautiful but barren queen who rashly enters into a bargain with a powerful deity in exchange for the gift of childbirth, and then struggles when the time comes to fulfill her side of the agreement.

A full-scale musical theatre extravaganza by Aborigi, OLURONBI: THE MUSICAL is an ambitious project which refreshes and updates a vital piece of indigenous culture for a contemporary audience. Audiences will be treated to rich dialogue, spectacular set pieces, and energetic and innovative original dance performances. All of which will be underpinned by live musical performances of original songs by a 50-man cast drawn from the brightest stars in the Nigerian theater and music worlds.

A visually stunning and beautifully-paced theatrical spectacle, OLURONBI: THE MUSICAL represents the arrival of the Broadway experience in Nigeria, with the debut of an ambitious project on par with such international successes as The Lion King: The Musical and Umoja, but one which is authentically Nigerian.

Two performances of the Production are scheduled to run on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at 2:00pm and 5:00pm, at MUSON Centre’s AGIP Hall, Lagos. Tickets are priced at N6000

Impressive…..there’s no underestimating the power of creative arts-music, theatre, movie….to create national unity, reduce crime and provide employment. Omawumi is impressing me a lot with her versatility. Hope the production heads to Canada soon!
