She’s the One! Annette Begg wins Elite Model Look Nigeria 2009

Elite Model Look Nigeria 2009 Bella Naija004Created in 1983, the Elite Model Look contest has become the largest glamorous and prestigious model search in the world. It is an essential form of scouting for Elite’s 37 worldwide agencies. The contest gives the agencies’ managers the opportunity to evaluate the contestants a chance to launch successful careers as professional models.
Each year, and in over 50 countries, local organizers, strictly recruited by Elite, set up regional and national contests, in which some 350,000 applicants take part.

Last year, Tracy Onyekachukwu won the Nigerian competition and went on to the Elite Model Look International competition held in Sanya, China. She is currently signed to Elite UK and was spotted strutting on the London Fashion Week ramps this week. This year the Elite Model Look in collaboration with their Nigerian partners Beth Modelling Agency were searching for the fiercest model in Nigeria. At the casting call held at Protea Hotel in Ikeja, over a thousand girls from all over the country were screened and only a handful were chosen for the finale.

The Elite Model Look event held on the 19th of September 2009 at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos was an affair to be remembered. It wasn’t just about viewing beautiful looking girls. It was much more than that. The models put on a show worth attending. From dancing down the runway to the infamous talent showcase that sent the audience roaring with laughter.

After a 2 hour wait (I should have known better than to arrive exactly on time) although the invitation said 6pm prompt, the show started at about 8pm. Representatives from the top fashion labels in Nigeria showed up with a glass of champagne in one hand and a designer bag in the other. With Moët & Chandon as an official sponsor of the event, there was enough champagne to keep guests light on their feet. Industry execs like Ruth Osime of ThisDay Style and Matthew Mensah strolled in looking dapper in his all black suit. Even Nollywood actress Genevieve graced us with her presence.

First, we were introduced to the models strutting down the runway in bikinis. Now these were true Nigerian beauties 5”6 and up and I kept saying ‘where did they find these Nigerian beauties?’ – America’s Next Top Model definitely had nothing on them. In all there was one model who caught the audience as she STOMPED down the runway (and I mean that literally) she literally bounced down the runway stomping back and forth. It definitely commanded the attention of everyone in the room, not to mention she was quite breath taking. One could definitely imagine her on a billboard in New York modeling Sean John jeans half naked except for pearls hanging down her chest.

Next up the models walked down the runway in clothes from Ituen Basi but they did it quite differently. They danced down the runway in Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”. Winding their waists and giggling as they did so (Tyra Banks would have surely frowned at one Model who thought she was at a dance competition, totally forgetting to model as she danced). At the end of the day, it was the stomping beauty that turned heads as she sat down on the runway in sunglasses and proceeded to execute the Dutty Wine (surprising as it may seem the crowd cheered) she showed that she had some type of personality.

The girls also modeled clothes by UK based designer, Samantha Cole and then strutted down the runway in slinky evening wear. They all looked beautiful but one person shone – her evening dress was actually my fave and the most beautiful in my opinion. The crowned winner of the night was Annette Begg. Her gown was gorgeous but her walk was definitely not fierce. She’ll learn to walk and she has the beauty and personality to make it in the modeling world. Annette is a graduate of Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls and is of Nigerian and Trinidadian/Toboggan heritage. She has appeared in quite a few music videos recently including D’Banj’s Suddenly. It is great to see her make the tough transition from commercial modelling to the runway. As her prize for winning the Beth/Elite Model Look Nigeria competition, she will receive 5 million naira towards international tuition and also gets a chance to compete alongside other national competition winners from 70 other countries at the Elite Model look finale taking place in Sanya, China on the Oct 18th 2009. We wish Annette a very successful modeling career.
Make us proud babe!

This is all well and good but writer you said america’s next top model has nothing on these girls. I think you exaggerated a wee bit…actually the exaggeration was much

  • Crazy Legs September 23, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Look at all the ego ta mo bus lekpa girls, lol… They’re pretty though.

  • Beauty September 23, 2009 at 11:26 pm

The Annette girl is real pretty though..

  • ladi September 24, 2009 at 12:01 am

This show had models. Antm doesn’t have models, mostly random fine/ interesting girls (‘strut-less’) that Tyra is trying to make something. Face of Africa chics have gone further than all the antms (maybe except Eva and the plus-sized black chic, oops i forget her name)…im even tired of that show.

  • luvlife September 24, 2009 at 1:20 am

The show gives the girls exposure and a platform to refine whatever modeling abilities they have while at the same time providing entertainment to the rest of us (who watch). That’s fair enough to me. The girls like other models, have to earn their place in the modeling industry. I disagree that only eva and toccara have become household names after the show….

  • A.A September 24, 2009 at 2:03 am

looking like anorexic lizards on a diet.
This is not african looking at all.
Enough of copying the west and their bullshyt.

WTF is cute about this pencil thin girl looking like a toothpick

  • Support local design September 24, 2009 at 11:08 am

Arent thin girls allowed to be pretty?
Im thin and I think Im quite hot, thank you very much. A lot of africans are naturally slim and plenty who havent heard of the word anorexia. Should we revoke their passports?

This is a modelling competition, where girls are competing for an opportunity to work in the west. Certain restrictions of weight and height apply to the modelling industry I dont think they will make an exception for Annette because its “not african”.

Besides, her long straight european (or brazilian) “hair” doesnt bother you as un-african so why should her size.

  • Skinnygirl September 24, 2009 at 12:25 pm

Wow…not all africans are on the big side you know. Skinny is not necessarily western..yeah we know some people try to be skinny for the wrong reasons but surely, there are individuals who have been skinny all their lives so easy on the insult…

  • FirstIWantToDanceWithYouPere September 24, 2009 at 4:00 pm

It annoys me when people say its not African looking to be skinny!!!!how ignorant can one be to say that?Have u looked around you?Africans come in all shapes and sizes.geez!!!

  • FirstIWantToDanceWithYouPere September 24, 2009 at 4:09 pm

@ Ladi i think quiet a number of ANTM girls have made it in modelling…Eva and Toccara(d plus size girl) actually stand out cos they have branched into other facets of entertainment. I see a number of ANTM alumnus on runways in various cities of the world esp NY fashion week!!!Bre and Yaya also are successful as commercial models….I know sa i am tired of the show, i didnt even know another season had started sef!!its getting old!!

  • judith September 24, 2009 at 4:19 pm

yay for annette. Goodluck in everything babes.

  • Abeni Ebony September 24, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Seriously, I think these girls look a little extra to me. Its one thing to be be naturally skinny/thin and flaunt that because thats how God made you but its another to have everyone believe that because you look extra thin, your a diva of some sort and this is how you should stay.

I agree the West has a serious influence here thats just a better buisness tactic for them…runways especially for Africans should be celebrating women as they look..black, beautiful, skinny, thick, short, tall, whatever..I believe God created us with a unique form of beauty that most of the west do not have..and like the west become trendsetters instead of followers.

  • silva September 24, 2009 at 11:14 pm

ur so ignorant, am tired of people comin here and ranting about wats african or not…. don’t u see skinny africans? since u obviously dn’t know, africans come in all sizes and shapes….
btw, u sound like someone who has body image issues, one of those people who hate skinny people bcos they try so hard to be like dem…

  • Mel September 25, 2009 at 5:21 am

the designs are so amzing!! does anyone know which shops we can find these outfits?

  • Xos September 25, 2009 at 7:18 am

Looking like anorexic lizards on a diet. A.A that was funny. She is skinny but there are people in modeling that are skinnier than her.

    Congrats Annette.

  • O.N September 25, 2009 at 10:18 am

LOL….A.A…you are definitely one hell of a jealous person!…you should go up there and see if you would even make it to the finals…well maybe you are fat, thats why you are soo bitter about Annette’s victory!

  • luvlife September 25, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Wow! even those that are correcting A.A. the hater have gone too far……you cannot correct hate with more hate-filled exchange

  • Nicole September 26, 2009 at 7:20 pm

People what planet are you on? Most young Nigerian girls I know are extra skinny. Has nothing to do with the Western world; it’s how a good number of us are built like that until our late 20s or when we get preggers. I lived in America for yrs and still came back skinny. I am 27, 5’9″ and I just started chucking my size 0 clothes this year and no I don’t look sick cuz I have a full face.

  • Nicole September 26, 2009 at 7:21 pm

    Stop hating y’all.

  • Nicole September 26, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Annette actually looks normal, it’s the girl to her left that looks more model thin and even she doesn’t seen anorexic…

  • Nicole September 26, 2009 at 7:28 pm

^meant seem and ^ to any other typos

  • bimpe September 26, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Do you guys know that some of these girls will still be considered “fat” if they were competing out here. I wish them the best i just hope they never gets so obsessed about modeling that they just stop eating all together! They look good in my opinion…

  • Ivory Tygers September 27, 2009 at 10:18 am

I’m model thin and very healthy. I don’t diet, and eat everything edible. I’m a size 0,6.3. Nothing can make me fat. I’ve come to accept it and LOVE it. Some people are specially made, you know….?

  • Bukky September 27, 2009 at 1:49 pm

i know some people are thin and some are fat!Africans are all diff sizes…but girl, abeg dont eat everything in sight o….because u thin doesny make it healthy

  • teris September 27, 2009 at 3:57 pm

    well, excuse me!

  • jennifer September 27, 2009 at 10:43 pm

hey by the way who were the judges of this great show anyway? i didnt see fotos of them anywhere or there were no judges? anything can hapn sha, niaja 4 u.

  • luvlife September 28, 2009 at 12:29 am

No they will not be considered fat because the modeling industry is seriously beginning to show concern for the health of the models. Any model skinnier than these here would be reason for alarm!!!!

  • Success O. September 28, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Abeni, what you are saying is very true. I have believed this for sometime now. Why do European standards of beauty serve as the standards for the world? I think it’s silly. If everyone started looking the same there would be no individuality, no diversity. What kind of world would that be??

  • chiazor August 5, 2010 at 3:32 pm

This is really fantastic and I am soo happy for her
She used to go to my school, and now she has made it bigg!!!!
She has made Vivian Fowler Proud!!!

  • Toni June 28, 2011 at 9:04 am

Actually it is the west who are copying the African look. African girls were traditionally slender and sinewy, like today’s catwalk models. It was because so many African girls were skinny that people in Africa associated thicker body with wealth. If an African man of the past wanted to marry he wanted to marry into a rich family. Not all Africa pursued this tradition. And even in the cases where they did, thick was considered a sign of wealth not a sign of beauty.

In Nigeria most girls are skinny but as they watch more Music Video from America featuring booty they unfortunately may be influenced to thicken up.
