Fashion Camp – Nurturing the budding Fashionista!

Introducing Fashion Camp (FC), a week of fashion seminars for fashion savvy people aged 13-25. The first of its kind in Lagos, FC aims to help teenagers with an interest in fashion, to learn and understand the ins and outs of the fashion industry.

Contrary to its perception in Africa, creativity is to be celebrated and FC aims to encourage teenagers with a creative flair along their way; letting them know that there is a good living to be made within the fashion industry.

The brain child of uber Nigerian UK based stylist and Fashionista Arieta Mujay, FC came as a result of the lack of African fashion mentors and mentoring programmes in the fashion industry. Fashion is an art form that evolves and young talent needs to be nurtured and encouraged as a result.

FC aims to impart a first hand account of what it’s really like to work in the fashion industry and to impart knowledge on the requisite beginner steps one has to take to achieve one’s goals.

With the help of Biki John, another UK based Nigerian stylist and fashion writer, the week long fashion seminars will include classes on photography, styling, the art of design, fashion pr, blogging etc alongside visuals and graphics. Through this, FC hopes to paint a precise picture that shows how both African and contemporary fashion have evolved and what lies ahead for the future.

In collaboration with DEOLA SAGOE, FC hopes to be the first of its kind and the beginning of a beautiful partnership for the benefit of the next creative generation in Nigeria.

Guests speakers at daily seminars/ lectures to include Deola Sagoe – MD and Head Designer, Deola Sagoe Ltd, Uche Eze - MD, BainStone & Editor, BellaNaija, com, Amy Jako, Veronica Ebie – VaneStyle & ThisDay and a surprise guest. Dates for FC are the 2nd to 8th August 2010.

Saw the cost on another blog and it was pretty steep! Great initiative, though!

  • sweets June 8, 2010 at 8:48 pm

Wonderful initiative!! I do, however, think the name of the other participating stylist, Biki John, should be in bold since it didn’t pop out like the rest of the names did until I actually read the article. She actually is an accomplished stylist amongst other things. Cheers.

Very great idea! I think they shd also see if they can create shows like project runway…to allow these talents to grow..

  • myopinionishonest June 9, 2010 at 3:30 am

Won’t these young people learn more from fashion websites and satellite TV? 80k is too much money just to hear people talk.

why do nigerians like to copy, they never come up wt their own initiative. this type of event was done in march and it was huge and successful, wt adebayo jones, lola maja, suby and co as the panel of experts, organised by one uloma enodien and hype foundation. so why is this article saying it’s first of its kind……give kudos to these guys for introducing this workshops and seminars to naija and not claiming this is the 1st of its kind in naija. the more the better, so gd idea, but its been done before……recognise pls.

  • Arieta June 15, 2010 at 11:42 am

Just to clarify and in response to the comment above… Fashion Camp will cover Fashion, Fashion Design, Photography, Makeup and more… Therefore it is THE 1ST OF ITS KIND in Lagos.. The a forementioned event above is very similar and the ladies are all LEGENDS in their own right but its different. I take all comments on board though, each to their own. Arieta.

  • lovely cat June 26, 2010 at 10:59 am

    I’m agree,fashion is art

  • mimi July 6, 2010 at 1:30 am

these areas you mentioned was covered by same event and that was the first time it was being organised in naija. yes fashion is art, but recognise the initiators of such laudable ideas. we need more of these and happy some of u are making it happen. i was only correcting the article, ur’s it’s definitely not the 1st time, the bold and beautiful youth foundation started it all.
