Technology oh technology! How lovely art thou!

We can all say without a doubt that technology is a beautiful thing. Things seem to be quicker and better. I remember the pre-mobile phone era. How did we really survive? When NITEL seemingly held each home to ransom! Today we are the children of the Blackberry or should I say Crackberry! You can browse the internet, make calls, chat, send text messages, pictures and video recordings all from one device. It’s all really fascinating when you think how far we’ve come!

But with everything good, there is always the bad. There is something about the facelessness of technology that makes us all somewhat bolder. We are able to flirt and say things via messages that we wouldn’t normally say face to face. Any comment made via black berry messenger accompanied with a smiley or “LOL” can take all forms of meaning. But even more seriously, we all seem to leave our senses behind when it comes to sharing certain forms of information via these technological sources. We don’t have to look too far to see how technology has damaged relationships, I am sure Tiger Woods will never leave a voice message for anyone in his lifetime! But if I am honest I am less worried about the impact of technology on men as I am about women, because as usual, in most cases, we seem to take the brunt of it all.

A good friend of mine recently called me in tears. She woke me up at 4am and I could barely hear what she was saying. At first I thought someone had died and I shot up from bed with a jolt, pleading with her to calm down and tell me exactly what had happened. Her story was pitiful. Her relationship was in ruins. In fact ruins might be an understatement. Her boyfriend of 5years had just dumped her. His reason? He had seen naked pictures of her on another guy’s phone! Shikenah! He didn’t want to hear any explanation, no excuses. He was done. In fact my friend was calling me from the gate of his house because he had just thrown her out, despite her pleading. When she finally got to mine and had calmed down a bit. I got up my courage to ask her what naked pictures of her were doing on another guy’s phone. She explained that she and her boyfriend had been on a break about a year ago and she had sent these pictures to this guy who she was flirting with at the time. When she and her boyfriend finally got back together, she forgot all about the guy. Unfortunately he hadn’t. Apparently, the guy is a ‘collector’ of such pictures and once in a while shows of his ‘art’ to friends. One of his friends being my friend’s boyfriend.

Another friend’s distant relative also got a rude awakening, when a sex recording she had produced with a guy started making the rounds on her classmates blackberrys. Apparently the guys in her university were fed up with her pretentious attitude and decided to teach her a lesson. All very very sad!

Now I am not a kill joy. I realize this is the global age and everybody wants to experiment. But even scientists wear protective clothing when conducting experiments. So we must all be careful! Although as with all advice, abstaining from such activity is usually the best way to prevent any of the above from happening to you, I understand that this option is not always possible. But it is important that you weight the pros and cons of every decision. Personally, I believe in this case, the cons definitely outweigh any perceived advantages. The embarrassment that could follow, in my opinion, far surpass any momentary thrill one could hope to enjoy.  Even if you trust your boyfriend or significant other, what if someone steals his phone or he sends it for repairs? However, if after all of the above you still decide to indulge yourself, please be smart and careful! The last thing any sensible woman wants is embarrassing pictures of her floating around the internet for all eternity!
