The international media continues to ‘knock on our door’ and seem to be trying to understand the Nigerian fashion industry. A few months ago, CNN spotlighted the Nigerian Fashion industry and highlighted the ‘tailor-made’ fashion system which is commonplace in Nigeria.

Once again, in a seeming continuation of the previous feature, they tackle the same topic as CNN reporter, Nima Elbagir explored the Lagos fabric markets, purchased ankara fabric and got an item sown for her.

The feature then transitioned to a more upmarket focus as they visited renowned Nigerian designer, Deola Sagoe. Deola spoke eloquently about the Nigerian and African fashion industry and the how Africa has a lot of inspiration has been borrowed from Africa by the West via “tribal” fashion. According to Deola, “...Now, its a renaissance, we are claiming back what is ours“.
The feature also showcased other aspects of the Deola Sagoe brand including their recently launched line of Polos and Denim.

I’ll tell you what they say about Deola Sagoe, they say, go to her if you are an ugly duckling and she will turn you into a swan“. Love that line!

That’s great. Not negativities every time. That’s what i said on facebook. Nigeria may not acheive great things that could make it be called a great nation but individually, we will continue to ahieve great things as Nigerians. Given an enabling environment, Nigeria is capable of being another America to Africa and other continents near us. God bless Nigeria.

OK, but there’s nothing so fashionable from this clip. People walking around the street, your regular folks in ‘ankara’ and traders hawking their wares, and doing their normal biz. The clip does not potray any fashion AT ALL, apart from the makeshipt ‘photo shoot’ wihtout the proper lighting…

      • Hali October 15, 2010 at 7:31 PM

Really…nothing so fashionable? Don´t forget that Fashion is subjective.

Are you serious? Does it have to be skinny, on a runway & half naked to be “fashionable” ? So if a photo of Kim Kardashian wearing regular “white tees & black tights” while running errands can show up in a fashion magazine (not saying that Kim is any kind of yardstick to measure any thing or anyone) then my regular lagos women walking around in ankara are all fashionable too.

True! She was in my set in QC! Her name is Shola. She does look good. The guy in the green shirt is also so hawt!

ha!!! abegi! you people should go and rest. What’s with the “she was in QC” talk. ehen? so? it’s becoming irritating when you scroll through comments in Bellanaija and someone thinks it’s noteworthy to mention QC. So what?

I love Deola Sagoe, i would like to say she’s our own Vivienne Westwood but i don’t want to compare her to anyone because she’s a legend in her own way.

The ugly duckling answer she gave is INSUFFICIENT.

I love her. But I’m disappointed with the interview

Not a bad interview…. Good going Deola Sagoe.
