BN Bytes: Nicole Ari Parker Kodjoe hits the 2011 BET Awards Pre-Event Red Carpet in a Stunning Ankara Dress by Ghanaian/Nigerian Label KIKI Clothing

By BellaNaija.com

We are still buzzing about the “double whammy” award triumph by 2Face Idibia and D’banj at the 2011 BET Awards. Just a few hours before the main show, BET Networks Chairperson Debra L. Lee hosted the 5th Annual Pre-BET Awards Celebration Dinner at Book Bindery in Culver City, California.

Hollywood actor Boris Kodjoe arrived at the event with his wife, actress Nicole Ari Parker Kodjoe. Nicole rocked a golden-hued ankara shift dress by Ghana-based Nigerian designer, Titi Ademola‘s label – KIKI Clothing. This is not the first time that Nicole has worn a piece by the label but she certainly stood out in a great way. We totally love the creative infusion of gold sheen into the ankara fabric.

    • Ms Fusspot June 28, 2011 at 12:43 PM

Love, love, love Ari and glad she’s wearing an African designer but don’t know what’s so “stunning” about the dress. Sure, it fits well but that’s about it.YAAAAAWN!

    • tallanee June 28, 2011 at 12:43 PM

i fink she looks stunning bt a lil luks older dan ha hussy

      • The MaDame June 28, 2011 at 2:25 PM

        eh? Hussy??? You mean “hubby”

    • Allegra June 28, 2011 at 1:13 PM

Dress is not too bad but would have suited a curvier lady. Not feeling it on Nicole.

    • my day June 28, 2011 at 1:43 PM

cudnt care less about the dress…it’s the husband i’m loving

    • xadex June 28, 2011 at 1:59 PM

I dunno, too much gold I think, but she’s hot so doesn’t look TOO bad

    • The MaDame June 28, 2011 at 2:33 PM

love the dress, but there is nothing special about the style – its the material that makes it stand out. Not feeling the shoes though~

Oh, and he is fineeee! Dang!

    • Bella June 28, 2011 at 3:14 PM

killed dead @ libra – yes we all love his lips but we love the Ankara more abi?

    • My Name is Bond - Jemma Bond June 28, 2011 at 4:18 PM

I’ve never seen shiny ankara before. It’s okay, nothing special.

    • THE AMAKA June 28, 2011 at 4:29 PM

nothing wow about the dress, IMO, i think its more of the person thats wearing the dress, not the dress itself.
@ISAIDIT, please, whether that be a joke or not, not cool. are they the only “good-looking” people on this Earth? ehhhh, for some reason you’re joke has an undertone to it.

    • THE AMAKA June 28, 2011 at 4:29 PM

its even more sad at how many people think they’re first. SMH.

      • Sola June 28, 2011 at 5:29 PM

LOL the internet must be extra slow today

      • Kemchi June 28, 2011 at 7:08 PM

Isn’t it just. Sometimes I think BN does it on purpose just to mess with their heads :)
All these 1st to comment ppl when will you learn that BN moderates comments? When y’all don’t see any comments posted do not, I repeat, do not think you are 1st and then get all excited about it o. Berra luck nxt time sha :)

    • Ogor June 28, 2011 at 4:36 PM

      beautiful dress..:)

    • Jide June 28, 2011 at 5:22 PM

We give kudos to a garment cos its gorgeous not cos its African. That said I dont see anything gorgeouse abot the design nor fit.
Lets not jump unto the bandwagon but be real and objective.
      Keep it real ppl.

    • Jide June 28, 2011 at 5:27 PM

The momet we starting loving garments cos of the origin and not quality people wont take us serious.
i believe Africa hav the best to compete with the rest of the world but need to keep the standard for whoever we get behind so they dont become complacent

    • Sola June 28, 2011 at 5:32 PM

Wat Dress the only thing I see in this picture is BORIS KODJOE

      • Naveah July 1, 2011 at 4:41 PM

LMAO! Damn right! Boris K all day every day!

    • Aibee June 28, 2011 at 5:46 PM

Okay, great dress. But the fabric, cut and style has been worn on a zillion red-carpets before. Infact, I wore the same style for my friends wedding back in May. Why on earth do we have a full Article dedicated to this? BN abeg now! Now my comments is definitely going to be ‘moderated’ for not being complimentary of the dress. Nice dress. I like, I love, I dig! NOT!. Now Boris is a different kettle of fish entirely, oomph!

      • Foxtrot July 1, 2011 at 12:27 PM

LOL! You are ab spot on and tres funny too.

      • Ada July 4, 2011 at 8:12 AM

You are missing the point! Now if you were a celeb on an important red carpet aka some award show out in the west, then yes Great! Point is that its great to see that celebs are embracing African fashion, especially someone like Nicole, whose husband is part Ghanaian! Extremely thoughtful on her part! NEXT!

    • titi June 28, 2011 at 5:47 PM

The dress simple and nice. If u dont like it,that is up to u jor.Her hubby is one of Ghana’s finest and ofcus she is proud of it so she is repping it…

    • HRS OLUBUSOLA June 28, 2011 at 5:53 PM

She looks fab! Sure she’ll sstand out from her peers at the awards!

    • Kemchi June 28, 2011 at 7:19 PM

      Loving me some Boris ;)
The dress is nice, I like. Stunning hmmmmmm……, but yay for Nicole wearing ankara by KIKI!

    • Stelzz June 28, 2011 at 7:50 PM

the dress is simple and nice..i like

    • Olivia June 28, 2011 at 10:16 PM

So cute to see that Nicole’s best ‘accessory’ will always be her hot hubby. She’s lost a lot of weight esp on her face and its making her look stressed and unhappy, not feeling the look, prefer her curvier self. The ankara is a bit too ‘loud’ for me but love the fact that she’s repping our ankara on a bigger stage..

    • mary007 June 29, 2011 at 6:09 AM

With a husband like that hmmm. You have to know how to spice it up

    • cheap designer handbags June 29, 2011 at 9:50 AM

she looks dazzling in this dress…great write up

    • Me2me June 29, 2011 at 9:56 AM

I love the idea and proud its African. To be on the real side, even my tailor down the road can pull off that outfit. Still….good job girl

    • chaos June 29, 2011 at 6:41 PM

Cute couple but I don’t get it, are they the only ones that attended the BET Awards????! 1 article for just 1 dress. Jeez!

    • tatafo! June 29, 2011 at 8:51 PM

it must be hard being married to a fine man. ah ah see how everyone is dissing his wife and complimenting him

      • Ada July 4, 2011 at 8:19 AM

Thats the sad part. I dont see why anyone will have to put someone else down, to prove a point. Nicole has lost weight, its taking away from her beauty. Boris is fine, yes! Point is he is a fine man and he’s married to her, and she’s with his on his right, who also happens to be the mother of his 2 children, and his wife of 6 yrs (wiki source unverified). Ladies on here deal with it, pray your fine fish finds you, or if your married and wondering why your husband no dey this fine, then make him fine…in your mind! Shikena!

    • WM June 29, 2011 at 9:50 PM

This is a lovely dress! Do want this kind of thing over here in the states! From my experience, African Americans (I am one) that watch BET are at this point the type who won’t appreciate this kind of style. (I don’t watch BET.) It really isn’t the most positive African-American media outlet…

    • amina June 29, 2011 at 11:19 PM

there is really nothing stunning about the dress. She should have come to our nigerian tailors, better still one our local tailors (at most 10,000 naira would have done justice to her outfit)

    • Sally June 30, 2011 at 12:12 AM

Too gold and matchie matchie, not feeling it.

    • spicy June 30, 2011 at 2:22 AM

Shoulda worn better shoes…Maybe that would have helped…maybe…jst maybe….hmm or maybe not…Boring dress

    • Fati June 30, 2011 at 8:18 PM

THE GOLD ON THE DRESS IS PRETTY ATTRACTIVE (AS ARE HER CUFF AND SHOE ACCESSORIES) BUT SERIOUSLY, I’VE SEEN MORE FABULOSITY WITH ANKARA @ LAGOS WEDDINGS. THAT SAID, THEY ARE A NICE COUPLE (LOOKS N ATTITUDE WISE). WISH THEM JOY N SUCCESS

    • Lola X July 1, 2011 at 1:21 AM

      Love it!!!

    • Foxtrot July 1, 2011 at 12:26 PM

The dress isnt nice. This was made by a designer? Any ‘bad’ tailor in Lagos can throw this up. Why do you try to push something that isnt there – Haba Bella!

    • Naveah July 1, 2011 at 4:40 PM

NON Africans always appreciate what is African MORE than Africans themselves! We will wear Ankara to traditional events but when we go to “oyingbo” functions, we want to squeeze ourselves into oyingbo outfits even to disasterous effects. Now, many companies are selling our own style to us in forms of this dress Nicole is wearing, bags, purse…heck, I knew it was on and poppin’ when I saw an Ankara wedge show at Steve Maddens in midtown west, NYC. I pray that this new trend will lead us to be proud of wearing our native clothing to events that are NOT strictly Nigerian and maybe possibly we might drop the weaves/wigs along the way and being similarly proud of the hair God has given us too.

    • TawaB July 7, 2011 at 2:48 AM
