Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W-TEC) Celebrates the 1st UN International Day of the Girl Child today 11th October 2012

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, establishing a day to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.  In reserving a day for advocacy and action by and for girls, the UN has signaled its commitment to end gender stereotypes, discrimination, violence, and economic disparities that disproportionately affect girls.

The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre – W.TEC stands by the United Nations in highlighting the discrimination experienced by girls. W.TEC’s Executive Director, Oreoluwa Somolu, states that, “Girls all over the world experience challenges in a plethora of areas from education to forced early marriages and health.”
W.TEC is a Nigerian non-­‐governmental organization working to encourage Nigerian girls and women to use information and communication technology (ICT) to empower themselves socially and economically.
W.TEC will celebrate the 2012 International Day of the Girl Child by speaking to secondary school girls about science and technology careers.

As we celebrate the 1st United Nations International day of the girl Child, we are happy that there are organizations like W-Tec, continually striving to empower Nigerian girls through continued and valuable programs.
