History was made on Monday 12th September 2011 when Angolan beauty hopeful, Leila Lopes won the coveted title of Miss Universe at the age of 25 – She was the first woman from her country to win.
In just 13 days, the 2012 edition of the beauty pageant, hosted by Andy Cohen (known for producing reality shows like the Real Housewives franchise and Being Bobby Brown) and E! News/Fashion Police co-anchor, Guiliana Rancic, will take place at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, USA.
Now 26 years old, the beauty queen who has been around the world championing HIV/Aids prevention, advocating for gay marriage, strutting major runway shows at the New York Fashion week, hanging out with celebrities including Jennifer Hudson, Ludacris, Jay Manuel and Ivanka Trump, and serving as an ambassador for her country, is set to pass the crown to the next beauty queen.

I love how she has acheived a lot within her reign, plus she’s truly a beauty queen. No hits from her dress style plus an ever-warming smile. That’s what a queen should look like.

I love leila Lopes…always did from day one. However, is it me or the people who took the pic were trying to make her lighter than she truly is in the first pic because when I opened this page I was confused initially. Secondly, in the photo shoot video she looked lighter as well, compared to when she was talking…When would we stop this slavery mentality/colo-mentality regarding being fair, more euro-centric and in line with the “white ideal.” We have to stop associating beauty with being light-skinned or having euro-centric physical attributes; over $500m is spent each year on bleaching creams. People in the public’s eye have been either made to bleach or made lighter in the photo shoots; dark-skinned girls aren’t getting the jobs anymore(read Gabrielle Union’s story in ESSENCE Magazine)…This case is too long and the limits of this post won’t let me drum the matter any further. Let us love ourselves, our skin tone for what it is. Shine if you are dark-skinned, brown or light-skinned. When we appreciate who we are, other pople would too.
