Quit the fake British accent sweety!

    • hmmmmmmmmmm December 20, 2012 at 8:12 pm

Toke….I guess RIM just made this easier/or errrr complicated with the recent introduction of the BBM 7 voice call!

      • Bibi January 15, 2013 at 7:33 pm

You don’t know what a British accent sounds like then!!!!

    • Bidi bang December 21, 2012 at 7:53 am

Hulu ur a hater….I love her accent please so you want her to sound very local eh…enemy of progress

    • .....just saying December 21, 2012 at 3:18 pm

Gbam! 4:20…Take us back to “dose” days….”Dey” wait all day….”dey” don’t ask how your dau was…. etc.

Babes. “Th” shouldn’t be that hard to pronounce.. Perhaps if you worked on your phonetics rather than your fake accent you would get simple words right

    • Nma December 22, 2012 at 1:22 am

Calling a guy who asks for ur pin a ‘moron’ is a tad overt. Someone may feel the same way u do towards u for preferring text/phone calls instead of the old school letter writing and face-to-face convos. I agree that technology takes away from the intimacy and effort in getting to know people but we have all adapted to technology one way or the other(some more than others), but that doesn’t make people “morons”.

With that said, i like chic-chats/rants like this…..it’ll be fun to have segments to talk of dating life in Naija cos some of us abroad think that u guys have it easy as y’all have a surplus of naija men compared to us. Guess not.lol.

Finally, Those calling this girl names are just pathetic in the worse way! It just seems like theres always something for y’all to pick on huh? Instead of focusing on the onions of the matter, u are more concerned about nonsense. BTW, why so pressed that she “sounds” british? Who taught u english? In fact, who owns the english language abeg? Just because some Nigerians speak english condensed with their native tongue doesn’t make it “Nigerian english”. English is english. She is pronouncing the words correctly. If she is on the other hand speaking her native tongue with “fone” then thats a different topic. I mean what is the compass here used in judging Nigerians’ english enunciation? Y’all will tear Psquare and Flavour down for sounding too “Igbotic” yet u beat down on her for having a “british accent”. I’m glad she doesn’t pay u fools any mind. Keep wasting ur time. Jobless lots.

What about quit commenting, if you have nothing good to say sweety!
I’m not Toke’s biggest fan but I’m so tired of Nigerians always criticizing people’s accent. Who cares what accent she speaks in, you heard her clearly and understand the point she’s driving at right? So, please go do something better with your life.
I can switch my accent too. Naijas accuse me of faking my fone all the time. When I speak my yoruba, you are too americanized. Not understanding, that I spoke English mostly when I lived in Nigeria and many Nigerians don’t speak in the stereotypical igbotic or Yoruba accent. Then, when my sister speaks her Yoruba, they tell her she’s too razz. C’mon now, abeg leave people to speak whatever accent even if it’s all mixed up. People speak regularly, doesn’t mean they are faking. The one I can’t stand is when some of these naija artists try to speak ebonics, or sound like the American rappers here, leave it for Black Americans.

    • zai January 1, 2013 at 7:34 am

all it is, is a refined nigerian accent, now, whether she is putting it on or not is something else. liking the girl or not is irrelevant. this ISNT british. stop airing your backwardness here, get a visa of sumthing and go and hear real british accents.

    • Prissie January 11, 2013 at 11:14 am

Its not british and she isnt english so quit the hate.

    • Bibi January 15, 2013 at 7:31 pm

I am very old fshioned too when it comes to dating

  • adenike December 20, 2012 at 11:45 am

‘Twas fun watching it. I quite like the bbm part. Truthfully, that act is disgusting. Guys need to learn to call/send messages. Don’t be a broke moron by relying on the bbm.
No Toke, our parents didn’t do it that way – they didn’t have mobile phones. Lol

  • Ms. Jayee December 20, 2012 at 11:46 am

    I don’t know what to say honestly….
She did make some salient points though…
Let’s see what episode two will be all about…

  • Style@atl December 20, 2012 at 11:46 am

Never lived or studied in Britain so what’s with such phony accent..how do folks boldly without shame spk like that knowing they have no reason to…another Tonto.

    • Fums December 22, 2012 at 12:28 pm

How does her accent affect u darling ? If hers sucks u then go back to primary skool and learn English phonetics .

    • Onut December 23, 2012 at 4:34 pm

How is her accent phony? The girl is speaking cultured English which sounds very natural to me. People should leave this poor girl alone abeg. I’m sure she has a thick skin anyway.

    • tabushuoyingwen December 24, 2012 at 1:24 am

      errr!!…She doesn’t have a british accent!!…She just speaks well!!

  • Claus Von Stauffenberg December 20, 2012 at 11:55 am

  • Lowly December 20, 2012 at 11:58 am

Tokeeee ohhhh. LOL! Wat accent is that? Pls STOP IT! It doesn’t even sound right. Anyway, yea I agree with you. I’m totally old fashioned as well. Death to the blackberry!

  • Kiki December 20, 2012 at 11:59 am

Funny video but very true. I agree that bb has killed dating and even marriages. Random people pinging your spouse when they update their pictures, talking crap just because its free. Perhaps if they had to pay or call it will be less intrusive. on the dating scene, It is so bad that some ladies even forget he has never actually called them yet he is supposedly interested. Toke you are so right in wanting a man to call or text to show his interest and any serious guy would do just that. My husband called me so much when we were courting and it felt good to know I was always on his mind. Sometimes it was a 2 minutes call but it was not a about the duration of the call but the fact he did. Women in our generation have somehow cheapened the essence of womanhood by our lack of standards and right conduct so the men feel they no longer have to behave like gentlemen.

  • Solva December 20, 2012 at 12:00 pm

    Good job Toke!

  • Phantom December 20, 2012 at 12:07 pm

chill people! her accent aint that bad, at least, not Beat FM bad. She talks pretty well and is audible, which IMO, is all that matters. watch it though; we dont want you falling to the ‘other side’.

  • Double U Double U Double U December 20, 2012 at 12:11 pm

Hi guys, my name is To- keh. You were driving down to Leh-key. Seriously Toke. Seriously. When she says “of course” and “stick to blogging”, her real 9ja accent slips through, and it happens quite often, I wonder why Toke can’t just relax and be real. It must be exhausting trying to keep up the act. ” Take us back to ‘dose’ days”, “Your hair all did”, even “ruined” you can’t pronounce well with foneh. Toke, nitori Olorun. I’m trying so hard to like this this girl, really trying, because she seems like the fun 9ja girl. She’ll be more lovable if she wasn’t so fake. At the end she finally pronounces her name Toke, with the proper intonation, without Britishness.
Men are not such morons, enough with the generalisation. Men have their terms for women, women have their terms for men, and you wonder why that’s all the men/women you find. Be careful what you project and profess, because that becomes your reality. The more you complain, the more you get more of what you complain about. Simple as that. Let your thoughts, actions and perceptions create your reality. Those that have found the true loves of their lives, and are blissfully happy (yes they exist) didnt find their partners from Mars. Abeg

  • David December 20, 2012 at 12:18 pm

What’s real about her. Fake hair, fake accent. Men don’t feel a need o work b/c the fakery is obvious and we don’t want to be bothered.

    • Prissie January 11, 2013 at 11:12 am

On about fake hair, fake accent. How many girls have you dated that have had their real her on? Chatting shit omg y’all make me mad with your blind comments and judgement, at least she is well cultured unlike perhaps YOU!
All Nigerians know how to do is spit out negativity to eachother, it wrong!
PERPHAPS YOU HAVE A BLACKBERRY RELATIONSHIP. smh

  • Ada December 20, 2012 at 12:18 pm

I think this is brilliant. Well done Toke, spot on! I am a huge fan. I just realised this guy that has been talking to me for 2 months has never called me. He only chats on BB. Even when we plan a date. I asked him now to call me and guess what? He doesn’t even have my number. I am so annoyed. Someways he will bb only at night. What should I do? Men are so lazy and women are desperate too. I am so hurt. To think that I didn’t even think of it as bad till Toke made this video. So sad

    • wale December 20, 2012 at 1:37 pm

answer: hes not into u. for him, the whole thing is just a hobby.

    • Because I can January 17, 2013 at 8:51 pm

Girl I hear that. Went through something similar with a guy I was talking to. I took him off my bb and told him he had used up his bb privileges. Now, if he wants to reach me he has to call or text. Enough is enough. When did bb become the sole means of communication? He calls a lot more these days sha but I already put him in the friend zone. My philosophy is a man who is really into you will call you. If he only bbs you then he is really just not that into you. So put him in the friendship box and find yourself a real man who looks forward to hearing your voice. We need to stop settling ladies.

People should stop hating on Toke. U can hear what she says why watch because you want to criticise? It is a bad habit. I am really sad about what I just found out here. God help me

    • Lowly December 20, 2012 at 12:40 pm

There’s nothing to hate on! The accent is bogus and distracting! Can’t even take what she’s saying seriously.

      • jane December 20, 2012 at 5:12 pm

at least the accent is better than most people. She is still speaking correct english..you go dey hate..but she is taking those notes to the bank..stop sipping on that haterade b! aint nobody got time for that.

    • Somebody's Pikin December 20, 2012 at 12:57 pm

We watch because we are interested in what she has to say and as her “fans”, who want to luv and support her to get to even greater heights, are we not entitled to our own opinions? Its called constructive criticism luv! And its only to help her get better at entertaining us and make her more appealing to others so her fan base can grow! x

    • Lolade December 20, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Okay people, I just CANNOT take it anymore, what is it? How do you guys derive pleasure from berating this girl all the time. Give her a break, DAMMIT! If she fakes foneh, soooo how does it change your life, ehn? The girl just got out of a relationship, and it probably has something to do with all the hateful stuff everywhere. Wicked people, later you’ll wonder why good things dont happen to you. Being nice wont hurt anyone

      • aramide December 20, 2012 at 3:20 pm

Some people are missing the point. If all you are getting is negative flack from people. You should check yourself, and examine what you are projecting out, and what image you are presenting to people, that is causing all the criticisms. She sha isnt the only OAP out there, so why are people picking on her? Er, let me see, the fakeness is not endearing. How about that? Everyone can’t be wrong, saying the same thing, and the term hater is so overrated and overused, its beginning to sound high school. Someone doesn’t like fake people, and automatically they are a hater. Is that the best conclusion your brain can come up with? If she wasn’t faking an accent, all this talk won’t be there. For every action there is a reaction. So please Lolade, tell your friend to take a sip of real-ade. Its free. Maybe her ex got tired of the fake person she had become. I’m guessing they were dating before she became famous. So, she probably is no longer the woman he fell for. You dont have to change who you are, because more people know you.

      • Bimpe December 20, 2012 at 4:44 pm

Give her a break dammit. Are you kidding me. Why are men morons, is not enough? When I put my comment below, I didn’t even touch on the fakeness, because Nigerians in general are not ready to learn. Fakeness is in our DNA. We won’t know how to do real if someone threw the book at us. Why would someone derive pleasure in calling men morons? Why. That’s rude and insulting, and she wonders why people don’t just love her. Who does she think she is Princess Diana or Kate Middleton? “The girl just got out of a relationship, and it probably has something to do with all the hateful stuff everywhere”. She is contributing to the hateful stuff she gets. I wonder the kind of stuff she must have said/done to her poor ex. I almost pity the guy. He must feel a lot of relief now. Asking why men are morons is simply hateful. That is the person you are taking sides with. Your single brother(s) must be a moron, your sisters boyfriends too are morons, your boyfriend too a moron, your single male cousins are morons, your single male friends are morons. Do you get my point now? It makes me LMAO, why people think Toke doesn’t deserve the responses that she gets. Honestly.

    • Nneka December 22, 2012 at 2:57 am

Its so funny to me when i listen to her I actually don’t hear a “British” accent (I grew up in London) so epic fail on her part if that is what she is trying to emulate. like her though and her fashion

  • nems December 20, 2012 at 12:22 pm

Guys are MORONS cos women allow them to be MORONS, it is like being upset cos your dog pooped on your sofa, oi you allowed the dog to do that so don’t be upset just train that dog well before you let him in the house. Girls train that man before you let him in, don’t even give him your pin and if he pings IGNORE. SET A STANDARD!

There are so many choices from the Iphone to Android phones. The blackberry is NOT a smartphone. before anyone mentions WhatsApp. At least, he’ll need to have your number first, ebfore he finds you on WhatsApp.

Oh my, GOD does answer prayers! Toke I’m not sure if you are going to read this but I know you. I hope you remember me after reading this comment. I met you at aunty Taiye’s house on edgeware road in August 2009 or 2010 I can’t even remember and I am so proud of you, the day we met, you told me of this dream of yours. I admired your passion and your strong believe that it would happen and I am so thankful that God has elevated you. I just got to my desk at work and my colleague who is not Nigerian btw was watching this video. Everyone here is laughing, I remember you auditioned to work with MTV uk and you really wanted the gig so badly. You see, it all works out in the end. Wow. Just wow! Your pictures are amazing, you are going places and my prayer for you is that the heart desires of your enemies be far away from you. I am overjoyed that God has made you a name back home in nigeria. Please remain humble. I will look for your number and call you. Stay blessed.
The video is on point men. The dating game has changed so much. SMH

This girl and her holiday accent. Did she just call someone a moron?

  • GossipGirl December 20, 2012 at 12:44 pm

She’s actually funny. Granted her accent fluctuates quite confusingly between Naija and will I call it British, but she’s interesting.

  • Remz December 20, 2012 at 12:45 pm

    Girl Stoppppppp!

  • OMG December 20, 2012 at 12:49 pm

Can you all shut it already! All your comments are so unnecessary. If she has chosen to have an accent is it your mouth? If you can’t take her seriously why bother watching? Abeg move on!!! The girl is living her life and to be quite honest, she must be doing something right. I have read all the comments from her pictures and I keep thinking this girl is going somewhere. Una sitdonhere they hate. Keep hating. I like how relentless she is sha. I really hope all this comments don’t get to her. It is tough following your dream in nigeria. Gadddddddem tough.

  • Abi December 20, 2012 at 1:03 pm

Calm Down guys… she speaks well.

  • brianna December 20, 2012 at 1:19 pm

please there is nothing wrong with her accent, she is a radio presenter ,in america/england and the rest of the diaspora, radio presenters usually have a different way of speaking if you listen properly, they try to sound more fun/animated all for entertainment purposes which i think Toke nails, listen to carson daly/ryan seacrest on the radio or even dermot o’leary on tv they all sound different on tv and sound normal in real life and i am sure toke talks to her friends in real life normally and even speaks yoruba to her family/friends but talks like this at her job/blog. so many Haters in nigeria, jesus.

    • aramide December 20, 2012 at 1:53 pm

Brianna, read this article, then you can come back and comment. http://www.bellanaija.com/2012/12/17/atokes-monday-morning-banter-honey-that-foreign-accent-sounds-home-grown/
I don’t think Ryan Seacrest and Dermot O’leary, fake an accent on radio. If Dermot got the US XFactor job, he would have sounded British. Sounding differently on radio is different from sounding fake, accent wise. Especially as, in little slips, your real accent can be heard clearly. Liz Hurley is British, Hugh Jackman is Australian, Nicole Kidman is Australian, Djimon Honsou is from Benin. These are global superstars, who have broken into Hollywood, without faking an American accent. So why should Toke not be criticised for trying to sound foreign in Nigeria, for Pete’s sake? Is there something wrong with sounding Nigerian? Mrs Alakija that even schooled in England sounds Nigerian. Mrs Okonjo Iweala sounds Nigerian. Oya what has Toke achieved in her life, that is higher than those two women, and she thinks speaking like a Nigerian, is so demeaning, she has to fake an accent. She needs to be comfrtable in her own skin and her own mother tongue. In her line of work, you need to endear yourself to people, and sounding fake is not the way forward if she wants to last in this business. Where are those talk through their nose Cool FM OAP’s now?

      • Idak December 20, 2012 at 5:45 pm

you have energy to educate those who have chosen not to appreciate the truth. For them, a fake accent is a proof of success.

      • Gbemi December 20, 2012 at 6:09 pm

Aramide, please get a life. Why do you reply to every comment that tried to stick up for Toke?? And in your case the word ‘hater’ is not overrated!!! Its obvious you just do not like the girl. Get over the silliness already. Toke is living her life, go get yours instead of sitting on a blog 24/7 replying to everyone that has something nice to say.
Toke am proud you are your own person. I appreciate the fact you speak in a clear accent, I can understand you and am sure you would appeal to international audience. You sure will go places by the Grace of God. To the topic, I am tired of bb altogether. Bring back days men wrote letters like ‘you are the sugar in my tea’. :)

    • Julie December 20, 2012 at 10:57 pm

Well said! Now finally someone who knows what she’s saying and has facts. Now that’s rear in Nigeria since I find that most Nigerians just TALK BECAUSE THEY HAVE A MOUTH with NO FACTS. The girl speaks VERY VERY well. She went to my sec school and has always been an entertainer and loved my all. As we grow, develop, enhance our language grows with us. If yours isn’t growing then your doing something wrong. And what’s so wrong in someone putting up scents of another accent? In fact maybe we all need to join her wagon. I am a doctor abroad and usually have quite a number of nigerian patients. Trust me, when most (actually all) Nigerian patients speak its difficult to understand. They call me to translate the “Nigerian language” even if its ACTUALLY ENGLISH!!!!! (I always reply). I must confess that i fell victim to that a couple of times. AND TRUST ME AGAIN, getting the right diction in your accent would anyways make you sound like your faking. We are so accustomed to omitting our “Rs, THs”, etc. we mostly talk FASTTTTT, I don’t know why. We still say “poshu” instead of “pursue.”
Please people let her be. She is someone that if I happen to see on BBC, CNN, etc, I would be sure that she won’t embarrass Nigeria.
Her accent is like a bed time story book, VERY EASY TO DIGEST.

      Deuces.

  • brianna December 20, 2012 at 1:21 pm

but back to the point of the video, i personally dont have a Blackberry or pin,i use an iphone and before that i used a nokia till 2008, so i have never encountered this problem you speak about Toke,i get text messages, imessages, phonecalls etc maybe you should get an iphone/samsung galaxy? xx

  • Zeemayar December 20, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Yea ! kudos to Toke, it was really interesting though funny enough our men can never change.it’s a pity you are damn right about the BBM stuff it has really ruined a lot of relationships, just name it……………….May God help us all.

  • Bushgirl December 20, 2012 at 1:50 pm

Abeg when you finish the episode just return to ur day job. A for effort, F for execution.

I know her face from all the plenty pics of her on BN. I was trying to listen but I couldn’t concentrate as I kept wondering how someone with her petite frame can carry all that hair! I cringed when she lifted it up. Scary!

    • JESS December 20, 2012 at 3:38 pm

very funnyyyyy@ drew,…personally i felt same.//im a gurl & i ve estimated she shd ve up to 6-8 packs of brazillian io her hair…individual differences…looolll

    • Idak December 20, 2012 at 5:57 pm

That must be why she keeps attracting morons.

    • omototun December 21, 2012 at 2:34 am

hahahahahahaha……that was too funny….I was thinking the same thing, but more in the lines of the folks commenting on her fake accent…Abeg I am one of those “radical” natural hair sisters…I’ll take a fake accent I can comprehend over a weave any day…and why stop at one fake accessory? you might as well have it all….Fake it all through life mehn!! hair, boobs, eye color, nails, accent, booty, teeth, etc. I did enjoy the clip though, I think its unfair to take that away from her…I’ll watch again :D

  • Funmi December 20, 2012 at 1:59 pm

I don’t see anything wrong in trying to refine your accent that is one of the reason of getting education and exposure in life U need to be able to communicate not only to your local environment but the world at large. This website is not only for Nigerian i lived abroad and I’ve got a lot of my white folks to love the site if Toke should speak plain Naija accent a lot of them wouldn’t understand so a bit of twist to the tone help. So guys give over and just appreciate the work the lady is doing so that you too can make head way. Toke keep doing what you want to do and no distraction Nigerian are very difficult to please. Goodluck

    • errrr December 20, 2012 at 6:25 pm

The white folks don’t change their accent for us to understand and we watch their movies, tv shows and news channels and understand. So we have NO reason to alter ours for them to understand. Look at the biggest Africans in Hollywood: Djimon Hounsou and Iman their accents are ‘KONKER’ than Nigerian accent and their realness has not hindered them- checks still rolling in.

Anyone will understand when we speak properly (even with Nigerian accent).

Her audience is not the ‘white folks’ also. They have enough webisodes telling them about men being morons. She should try and related to her audience especially since the accent is not real.

      • Julie December 21, 2012 at 12:29 am

Errrr not completely true. I have a white BF who begs to differ and other white friends who have stolen 2 or more Naija phrases from me….even saying things like “nnaaa men” and singing to rhymes like “Oyibo pepper, licky licky pepper.” My BF sounds Naija now so if other nationalities aren’t learning anything from their Naija friends then they might just not find them interesting enough.

BUT please wait!!! people who say “Toke Makinwa is changing her accent to a British one’, leave me so embarrassed for my country people (in Naija accent). So sad that after all our colonial master days you still don’t know the difference between a British accent and a well polished Naija diction. This girl’s accent is plainly REFINED NIGERIAN ACCENT. Dotting her “Is,” crossing her “Ts,” using her “Rs & Th,” and speaking so clearly in no particular accent more so that any english speaking person could understand. If your not proud of her then YOUR JEALOUS. LOL.

        Am out.

    • Eno December 20, 2012 at 7:00 pm

      Preach!!!!!!

  • kingsley Usifo December 20, 2012 at 2:03 pm

I love toke so much just becos people keeps criticizing her accent, her skin and yet she is still very strong to put up good presentations.Really who doesn’t form accent in Nigeria( precisely youths), is just so bad that we don’t encourage our stars.Toke God will continue to bless you and take u places.Keep the good job up baby

  • nnenne December 20, 2012 at 2:17 pm

this is actually the 1st time i’ve heard her talk and i must confess, i likey likey. what’s fake about her accent if i may ask? she’s just speaking good english and making sure her words come out right and not hard to comprehend. that to me is very good. Toke i don’t know u and might never get to meet u but u just got a huge fan. nice one girl!! infact will start going to your blog. and she is so right about the BB thingy. i stopped entertaining “toasters” on my bbm cos it doesn’t just feel right to me. they make it so cheap and annoying. next thing is to ask u to send plenty pics of yourself which irks me to my bone marrows. few months ago, i met this dude and he asked for my pin, i was like “no, why don’t you take my number instead?” he insisted and i gave him but never accepted his request till date. i’m sure in his mind, he would have regretted not taking my num. looool. i lost my bb some months back and i haven’t gotten a replacement yet and i have noticed its been less quarell with my boo. when i had the bb, we were always quarelling. but i don’t want to tell him what i’ve noticed cos that will just make him not to give me the bb he intends to give me.lool

  • aramide December 20, 2012 at 2:22 pm

The way I see it, it is actually insulting to us Nigerians, to fake an accent in a job like radio, or even any job at all. As long as your paycheck is in Naira. It’s like trying to say, you don’t want to sound like us o, because you are better than us. You are more posh than us. Faking an accent IN NIGERIA. If the job was at a radio station in the UK for example, it may even be a little understandable. Even at that, there’s no point also faking too, because your accent will even make you stand out, and be more recognisable to your audience. Djimon Honsou is sha from Benin, and he still sounds the way he does. Keith Urban is Australian, and he is global superstar. British acts that have made their way into the US still sound British. Roger Federer’s accent is evident of his background, Rafael Nadal, Novak Jokovic, Russel Crow, Kofi Annan, may I continue. So who is this wannabe Toke trying to feel like? Who are her clique of friends and colleagues, that she is feeling inferior, she has to fake to belong. True achievers don’t need to fake it to be heard or to be accepted.
In Nigeria, a home grown born and bred talent is faking an accent, and you don’t want us to be offended by it or criticise. I swear we are fake people in Nigeria. Fake lives, fake marriages, fake government contracts, fake staff.

    • Lani December 20, 2012 at 5:46 pm

Aramide jeez take a chill pill biko. Kilode?! If she wants to fake an accent, how exactly does it affect you? Whats insulting to Nigerians is to live in a country with so many natural resources and still have 70% of our population living below the poverty line. And this statement ‘Oya what has Toke achieved in her life, that is higher than those two women, and she thinks speaking like a Nigerian, is so demeaning, she has to fake an accent’ is actually so demeaning and insulting that I have to ask you what you have achieved in your own life? No body knows you! I am sure you sound like a local Ibadan girl. Get a life and leave the girl’s accent alone.
Everybody screams about Toke’s accent but i am yet to hear the foneh. OMG this girl’s accent is perfectly normal. Maybe its because I live in England. No discernible foneh here. She sounds like an educated Nigerian minus the ‘r’ factor. Toke dear, good video, will be watching.

    • Eno December 20, 2012 at 7:21 pm

Oh please aramide!!!!!! Enough already!!! Ah ha! She is is not just entertaining you in Nigeria. The internet is not exclusive to Nigerians and Bellanaija is also not exclusive to Nigerians too. The most important thing is being clear and audible enough for anybody (Nigerians and non Nigerians)to hear and understand.I live outside Nigeria and love this site. It is a site I would readily share with my non-Nigerian friends. So it important that I do not have to interpret whatever your definition is of Nigerian English to English everyone (including Nigerians) can understand. I really do not understand the need for all the bitterness. I think she speaks very well and I think you should take a chill pill, seriously….and while you are at it take time to take off the ‘fake’ hair, ‘fake’ nails, ‘fake’ lashes and fake whatever else you have on. Geez, give it a break.

      • Uche December 20, 2012 at 11:27 pm

Eno, reply to this comment. Mschew. I had to copy and paste this. Only Nigerians will change who hey are to please other people. Only Nigerians have inferiority complex.
Her audience is not the ‘white folks’ also. They have enough webisodes telling them about men being morons. She should try and related to her audience especially since the accent is not real.

    • JESS December 21, 2012 at 6:34 pm

@Aramide, what do u waaannnt? jeeezzzzzzus chrrriisst!!! personally i thnk u need to be examined.. u wouldnt expect he to start talking like okonjo iweala or count her alphabets like wole soyinkaat this age, shez got a narrow vocal cord.. its called individual differences… dont u listen to NTA 9pm Network news? u dont expect her to speak like my fore fathers plzzzzzz..whatz the whole essence of learning oral english in ur senior secondary school? therezz absolutely nofin wrong with her speech.. and if u may know, i live in Uk, that doesnt even sound like a recognised british accent, it sounds more like an exposed nigerian, its a mix of several accents

    • shells February 5, 2013 at 12:51 am

Mrs Alakija that even schooled in England sounds Nigerian. Mrs Okonjo Iweala sounds Nigerian. Oya what has Toke achieved in her life, that is higher than those two women, and she thinks speaking like a Nigerian, is so demeaning, she has to fake an accent. ….OYA ARAMIDE TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED IN YOUR LIFE????THAT STATEMENT, I THINK , IS JUST UNCALLED FOR…NO TWO HUMANS ARE THE SAME SO HOW DARE YOU MEASURE ONE PERSON;S ACHIEVEMENT AGAINST ANOTHERS..AND IF U DARE DO SO, THEN PLEASE SHARE YOUR OWN ACHIEVEMENTS TOO……..TOMORROW SOME PEOPLE WILL WONDER WHY THINGS GO WRONG IN THEIR LIVES, ALL THIS UNCALLED FOR BASHING OF SOMEONE ELSE SHOWS HOW YOUR THOUGHTS AND WORDS ARE CRITICISM FILLED…AND U EXPECT TO BE ACCOMPLISHED IN YOUR LIFE W/O STRUGGLES OR CRITICISM FROM ANOTHER

  • Aponbiede Oluwatoyin Akeem December 20, 2012 at 2:32 pm

Good work Toke.ladies of today don’t ce about tomorrow, all they care for is how they will get cash from him and move on. Ladies respect yourselves so that guys will do as well. And Toke please watch your dressing, you expose too much of your body,we are not in Yankee or Queens land biko.

  • Kay December 20, 2012 at 2:51 pm

I tink it’s hilarious!!!! Thumbs up toke, dis is a bold move.

  • Caligula December 20, 2012 at 2:54 pm

NAIJA CHICKS – Stop with the hating please. It’s like being a professional hater and jealousy is embedded in Nigerian women’s DNA. This video is cool, she’s cute, her accent is dope and I like the topic. TOKE, do your thing.. I’m a bit busy but I’ll watch and comment whenever I can! :)

  • Funke December 20, 2012 at 2:56 pm

It’s funny I watched this video twice and can’t place where the ‘foreign accent’ is. Guys, take a chill pill. Keep calm and go make love. Would you prefer her to talk like Suliat before she ticks the boxes?

Anyone can choose to speak however they want, it called CHOICES!!!

    Arrrgggghhhh

  • Kay December 20, 2012 at 2:56 pm

Ps: Does voicenote count for bb users??? Jst a tot

  • Anonymous December 20, 2012 at 2:56 pm

Ok. Lets start with the positives, I do get your point about a guy calling instead of just bbing. But….. Moron, really?! I think you should get quizzed on Flytime word of the day for the meaning of that word. Cos he chooses to communicate thru bb rather than calling makes him a Moron? Also, ladies better wake up from the sleep you’ve been put into by these Rom movies lest you make your husbands boyfriends and vice versa. I don’t really care about way accent you decide to speak in.

  • Caligula December 20, 2012 at 2:57 pm

Fake accent or not, she sounds cute and it sounds real:: PERIOD. Y’all please get over this ignorant, backwards ish..

  • pynk December 20, 2012 at 3:06 pm

As a woman, you are what you are attract. If you dont set standards for yourself, u are just a moron getting with another moron.

  • Anonymous December 20, 2012 at 3:09 pm

    But why!!!

  • Why women? December 20, 2012 at 3:13 pm

Is it just me or Nigerians are just evil? ahn ahn! Cant you guys just appreciate or keep envy in your hearts without unleashing it at the slightest moment. I hear Toke is like this too which is sad! However, concerning this, she is well spoken, infact very and clear. What do you want again? Women please stop this, its really disgusting and just shows a lot of insecurity.

  • xy December 20, 2012 at 3:15 pm

good job Toke, keep it up

  • flo December 20, 2012 at 3:18 pm

People are just so silly! She is speaking good english.. it is a problem… Good Job Toke.. I shall be visiting your blog.. Much love from Canada!

  • BeeT December 20, 2012 at 3:23 pm

Well, not all men are morons…:)

  • u go girl! December 20, 2012 at 3:26 pm

I actually liked it. I get that the accent is a bit forced but who cares? At least she speaks good english. She tried and I was pleasantly surprised…she seems fun and down to earth-ish, not arrogant or stuck up (as some bad minds would have you believe lol). It definitely isn’t 100% but I still applaud the fact that she keeps on her hustle despite all the haters. #thumbsup!

  • aproko December 20, 2012 at 3:32 pm

    Good job Toke!

  • mzJazzy December 20, 2012 at 3:33 pm

I agree with her the pinging thing is annoying

  • femmelounge December 20, 2012 at 3:40 pm

oh well… some good points made. Not all men are morons though.
    http://www.femmelounge.org

  • Bimpe December 20, 2012 at 3:42 pm

Calling men morons, just like that Toke, and you are comfortable with that, and some silly girls here too are nodding their heads in agreement. Oma ga o. Men have suffered in our hands. The way women talk about men, you would think they themselves are prizes. Not saying it is any woman’s fault if she is still single o, but don’t be bashing men, when you are not gold or platinum. If you were, no man will let you slip out of his hands, because he knows he has it good. A jewel of inestimable value. He who has found a wife, has found a good thing. Your mates are happily married, obviously those women did things differently abi. Whether for good or bad, a man deemed them good enough to marry and be the mother to their children. Or are all the married women the first girlfriends their husband’s had. All this male bashing is getting old abeg, and I’m a woman. Let us women too examine ourselves. If “morons” are the types you are attracting, my dear, you must exude moron attracting pheromones too. Toke you aint all that, get over yourself please.

  • adenike December 20, 2012 at 3:45 pm

I watched the video a second time and I had to come back to post another response. I have a problem with the generalization Toke. Calling men, morons is tad disrespectful, insulting and rude. Let’s try turn the table around for a minute; try picture a post written by Ebuka Uchendu titled “Why are Women Morons?” I’m sure the post will generate over 400 comments from very angry women (me inclusive) waving the gender equality wand.
Here’s my point – Toke, you’re a respected OAP, watch what flies out of your mouth. Calling men morons is tad rude and silly.

    • Princess December 20, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Its just her view… U can disagress but i dont feel she is generalizing. We all mk statements like ‘y re pple stupid’ doesnt mean everyone is stupid, just mean there re stupid pple living amongst us. So y re men morons just mean there some morons amongst us. Dont over stress the ish! Just go with the flow or flow with the wind…!

    • Anonymous December 20, 2012 at 5:32 pm

      a tad* #thankmelater

  • Drama December 20, 2012 at 3:52 pm

That’s why you all should get a samsung….i swear by the S3….No broke ass niggers relying on 3K BIS service to chat up a sister and ish. Nigerian men are really a handful. Lord help us all..amen!

    • Linda December 26, 2012 at 4:28 pm

I absolutely concur about the S3. Let’s see what cheap, broke ass, lame dude will be asking for that crap called “BB Pin” when you have an android. If he really wants to get to know ya, he’ll request for your phone #. Who still uses Blackberry? Sheesh!

  • Anonynous - Guy December 20, 2012 at 3:53 pm

Nice video with good points. I don’t understand why some people on here are complaining that she’s ‘forming fone’, please get over yourselves!!! She’s not forming, she just speaks well, comes across as exciting and interesting. If that’s too much for you to handle, go hug a transformer. Y’all don’t even know what ‘fone’ sounds like. It’s now a routine thing in these parts that anybody who speaks good english is forming, smh for you all. I think your complaints are more out of jealousy than anything else.

    • Bimpe December 20, 2012 at 4:27 pm

There is speaking good english and there is foneh. Go and sit your ass down abeg. You must be a member of the fake brigade. Yes, guys too can be fake. As #aramide wrote above. Mrs Alakija, the richest woman in Africa, speaks good english and sounds Nigerian. Mrs Okonjo Iweala, with all her achievements also speaks good english and sounds Nigerian. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde speaks good english and sounds Nigerian. Stella Damsus Aboderin speaks good english and doesn’t sound fake. These are accomplished women in their careers. So, what is Toke’s excuse. She calls men morons, and she wonders why people don’t like her, and her criticising her all the time. You must be one of the morons she is talking about, that is why you are fine with that BS she just posted. Birds of the same feather. We should intorduce you to Toke, since it is your kind that she keeps attracting. Morons Anonymous

  • ayo December 20, 2012 at 4:16 pm

Why would I want to date a person who calls me a moron??

  • taiiiiii December 20, 2012 at 4:30 pm

i honestly dont know why people beef this girl, the more the hate, the more i even love her. Even if she bleached, na your skin, even if her foneh is fake, are you on the radio??? please all you haters should go and sit down joh. Nonsense.

I sooo agree, i dislike guys who collect pins, call, CALL, CALLLLLLLL!! And i dislike when they type “hey you” or “ping” hahaha what century are they in(i guess its 2012 century) lol.

  • Truth Hurts! December 20, 2012 at 4:47 pm

I hope you give this your best shot..I mean the every Wednesday thing. Pls do not be discouraged by the not-so-nice comments. Happy days!

  • Princess December 20, 2012 at 4:54 pm

Pls guysssss the message not the messenger….. Her english is pure-accent or no accent!! We all fake something at some point in our lives… Im sure some of u screaming fake accent, either hv fake hair, nail, eyelash, boobs, fake atitudes, so plssssss while ur pointing at someone else, ur fat thumb finger is pointing back at u!!! Give the lady a break!!! She is tryna make a living rather than be with ur daddies for money……! Keep it up babes!!

    • Claus Von Stauffenberg December 20, 2012 at 5:06 pm

Lol @ “she is tryna make a living rather than be with ur daddies for money”.

    • ashani December 20, 2012 at 6:56 pm

      Gba!

  • debbs December 20, 2012 at 4:56 pm

i think this was fun n come on people the accent was good not trying too hard like Tonto but polished and audible. i love this n will wait for you next wednesday

  • Claus Von Stauffenberg December 20, 2012 at 4:57 pm

On the surface, some of the points appear valid, but a couple of things kill this video:
1 On a topic like this, the most useful outcome is to have both sexes discussing it. When you alienate approx 50% of your audience by calling them morons, things just go downhill from there.
2 If you find experienced men routinely doing something in the wooing scene, it’s because it works!

  • Surrey Anyukov December 20, 2012 at 4:57 pm

Well, dont think i have any issue about her accent. As for the BBM issue, its simple. If a guy walks up to you, chats you up and then asks for your pin. its simple, kindly tell him, you dont have a BLACKBERRY, then he’ll get your digits. That way, he gets to call and send the text messages you craving for. I hope i’ve spoken well. lol

  • bola December 20, 2012 at 4:57 pm

Without enough to form an opinion about Toke Makinwa i think she did well with her web episode. You can only appreciate her post if you have a decent sense of humor and dont have any beef with her. If you are going to critque her, it would be only fair to give her credit for the originality of her idea and give tips for improvement. Good Job Ms Makinwa, i would like for you to focuse more on your content and delivery…happy holidays

  • Viv December 20, 2012 at 5:11 pm

Toke, I think moron is really a strong word to use on someone. Take two steps back and check the meaning of the word called moron and I bet you would not like it if someone used the word on you. As for the message…….nice and keep it coming. Plsssssss drop the accent, not cool abeg.

    • Chikaka December 20, 2012 at 6:34 pm

I like your comment and i agree with you. I was laughing while watching it. But this whole BB thing, is it what younger guys do? I guess i’m in a different generation where men don’t toast via BB. They want to visit and even sleep in my house! Is that better? I only have family members and three friends on my BB. I keep it personal.

    • Heeba December 20, 2012 at 7:24 pm

I agree it’s not the word to use technology has made them LAZY not morons…….
Yeah she really started with a strong Brit accent then change to her good speaking Nigerian accent? She should learn to stick to one during a full conversation.in her career it’s not bad to be able to switch but please decide which one u want to use at a particular time and stick with it. In btw is it the lighting or her knuckles dark?

  • Roomandparlor December 20, 2012 at 5:21 pm

lovely idea Toke. I can see my self hooked. A quick suggestion though: from the perspective of a consumer, I think you’ll warm your way into my heart better with a naija-girl-next-door persona. Tone the accent a tad and be a bit more natural. I want to feel like we are buddies and you’re chatting with me about things that pop up in your mind. So fa so good though.

  • Odine December 20, 2012 at 5:46 pm

All you can do is hate this girl simply because she dares to try, to succeed and make something of her life. People have been known to hate what they don’t understand and what they wish they could be. She does one thing and people are hanging on their filthy cheap lazy unsuccessful a**es and hate! Bloody morons simply existing for the sake of hating! Many of you losers hide behind blogs and the Internet because on any given Sunday you aren’t worth the cheapest thing this girl is worth! Toke, you can only get bigger and better while these dumb morons remain nameless, faceless and irrelevant!

  • Idak December 20, 2012 at 5:48 pm

What do you call a woman with a fake accent, fake hair, fake skin and even faker desire for attention?

    • Jessica December 20, 2012 at 10:23 pm

I am hoping your wife has never relaxed her before, doesn’t put on make-up, has never added xtension or braided her hair. If she has done any of these things then she is also fake according to your standards. It seems your positive pill only worked for a couple of days. Please take a sit behind and stop acting like a mentally derailed soul.

      • Idak December 21, 2012 at 11:42 am

Yes, she does not have any of those fake things you referred to.
By referring to me as a mentally derailed soul, you are merely exposing your moronic tendencies.
On a related note, stop following me around like a puppy following poo. I wonder why i am so important to you that you have to keep tabs on me.
Go play in the rain, love.

    • Asking Questions December 21, 2012 at 4:44 pm

      Moron!!!! LWKMD

    • Ayo January 15, 2013 at 3:42 pm

      a MORON

  • daeni December 20, 2012 at 5:50 pm

why are men morons? simple…women can be quite unrealistic. fake hair, fake height, fake lashes, fake skin (face and otherwise), increasingly–fake features (boobs, vaginal reconstruction et al). Although we subliminally acknowledge your efforts by pricing your offerings, all these would attract all men yet keep fake men who eventually act “moron like” when a new offering presents on the market (No disdain, just being real). So the moral of the story, you get the price for what you sell.

  • TruthTeller December 20, 2012 at 6:06 pm

Her accent definitely isn’t as bad as people have made it seem.

  • lucy888 December 20, 2012 at 6:11 pm

enough of this accent issue, its not always done poposely it also has to with the tune of ur voice and the movement of the tongue. we all have different lips, tongue and vocal sound. i think thats the way she speaks no accent or whatever.

    • lucy888 December 20, 2012 at 6:35 pm

as for the fact that men are morons, i totally agree…not just that, they are also very lazy when it comes to dating and romance they think you now belong to them and so they show less concern as time goes on…thats so sad…well, to every smart girl, thats the right time you kick his lazy ass out of your life.

  • Nkan be December 20, 2012 at 6:33 pm

    Kinda acting like Wendy williams

  • Eno December 20, 2012 at 6:52 pm

I am not sure I understand why most people here are more focused on her accent and not her message. Why are we so shallow. Most of us are commenting with our fake our hair, fake nails and fake everything else and yet we cannot stand her ‘fake’ accent. Seriously people, enough already! Ladies constantly hating on ladies. We have become our worst enemies.

Anyway, to reiterate what Ada said previously,” Men are so lazy and women are desperate too.”

  • pade December 20, 2012 at 7:21 pm

Toke looks much older than the age she claims( my opinion).
I also remember reading here that she would be getting married soon( birthday chat cant really remember), so how come she is suddenly available? Did the guy pass away.

  • x factor December 20, 2012 at 7:30 pm

Good Job Toke……….However, I think you should have used another word and NOT Moron

  • Person December 20, 2012 at 8:05 pm

I have just never understood why people like jumping on Toke’s back. Na wa o. All of you shouting fake hair, I hope you don’t have any form of extensions or braids in your hair. And that includes Expression or whatever the hell Kanekalon hair is called. And I hope you all have some conc Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa accent cos otherwise, you are also forming fone. Na wa for una hate o.

Anyhow, I liked the video. I didn’t hear her say ALL men are morons. She made some very good points. Keep it hon. Definitely following your blog now :)

  • Caligula December 20, 2012 at 8:47 pm

Toke, say what you want jo.. Just like Solange, its YOURDAMNBLOG!

And people PLS – she has a right to call men names if she wants to. And MORON is not all bad, it basically means ‘dumb’ for the bush people on here acting as if she rained curses on your forefathers…hissss! Freedom of speech people!…so pls GET OVER IT! she can say whatever the heck she feels like saying. I bet you 99% of the haters on here are Yoruba females..LOL..

    I love BELLANAIJA!!

    • Anon December 21, 2012 at 12:59 am

No need for the tribalistic angle.

    • Kola S December 29, 2012 at 9:39 pm

Moron is a stronger version of dumb…and the freedom of speech principle applies to those responding as well. She has a right to call men names and people have a right to criticize/challenge that. That’s the sweet thing about this freedom of speech.

  • Yinkus Pinkus December 20, 2012 at 9:39 pm

I completely agree though. Share exactly the same sentiments.
I generally don’t get the point of collecting someone’s pin. You easily get lost amongst 1000+ other contacts. It’s either you want to get to know me (personally) or not.

  • Debutante December 20, 2012 at 9:54 pm

I absolutely agree with Toke on bbm, i have had to let go of my blackberry for the same reasons..

  • averagenigeriangirl December 20, 2012 at 10:22 pm

Nigerians complain too much. she sounds perfectly fine, no fake accent or anything! sheesh. unnecessary hating. Nice video Toke, I totally agree with you. Gone are the days when guys take their time to woo a woman. so sad

  • MissOzzzzz December 20, 2012 at 10:27 pm

Now that’s a woman who’s got brains and standards too. I love everything you talked about Miss Toke. And for those of you talking about her “fake British accent”, don’t be stupid! Go to a radio station, apply for a job, do your voice test and make sure your Naija accent is heavy. If you get employed, Halleluyah!

  • omoibo December 20, 2012 at 10:51 pm

While I don’t live in naija, she does have a valid point with the whole BBm PIN request. But then again has it crossed Toke’s mind that maybe those same guys you call morons weren’t so much interested in speaking with her over the phone? As a guy, I can tell within 1 minute of exchanging pleasantries with a lady whether or not I want to proceed with the chase or pass and sometimes out of courtesy I will take her number just for the heck of it with no intention of ever calling. Everyone has the right to be picky

  • kenora December 21, 2012 at 12:03 am

@brianna l go with ur comment, bcos as 4 m av nt used BB b4,l was using iphone b4,nw l am using samsung galaxy,l only received calls ad messg,l dnt like BB ,l think if anyone is avin prblm wit his or her reltnship, bcos of BB ,he or she can change there phones bcos is not a must having a BB

  • Busola December 21, 2012 at 1:07 am

Can everyone screaming fake this, fake that give it a rest already??? You lot have way too much time on your hands.. Btw, how does that affect you. It’s her life, please let her live it. Personally, I think she has a good diction and no accent whatsoever. Even if she does with few words, ignore it and keep it moving. It annoys me when Nigerians bring up the issue of accents as if there aren’t any more sensible topics to discuss. This is why Nigeria isn’t progressing.. So much hate, so much complain.. I’m done yo!

  • Hi December 21, 2012 at 4:12 am

Toke Makinwa made some valid points:

    1. BBM is more dangerous than useful

    2. The current generation of men are lazy

    3. Value the time you spend with yourself.

    :-)

  • NNENNE December 21, 2012 at 5:07 am

@bellanaija…..why don’t u post peoples’ comments now?..Anyway ,what happened to ‘how she left my brother webisode’

  • InCotonou December 21, 2012 at 9:54 am

I tried to watch this video, but I could not get past the fake accent. Now, let me ne clear hear. I have no problem at all with Africans speaking English, French, Portuguese, German, whatever, with foreign sounding accents. Afterall, these languages are not our native tongues, and we had to acquire them. So it makes sense that when a person has lived in a foreign country for long, they should sound different from the locals. But accents, foreign or local, shoudl sound natural. Not forced. You can tell by the way that her accent is inconsistent here that she is forcing it. It puts me off because i think local accents also have their own charm and faking and accent just because you think it makes you sound more ‘classy’ or “sophisticated” is just lame and ignorant. It just shows that you lack confidence in yourself. This puts me off!

  • sonalove December 21, 2012 at 10:03 am

the accent isnt so strong.. she tried to mix it with a bit of nigerian accent… besides please pick one.. if she speaks local english u go vex and now she mixes it with a bit of british u are all like shes fake.. blah and blah.. please pick one.. geez.. humans can never just be satisfied

  • chinny December 21, 2012 at 10:37 am

Haters, whats so British about her accent? She just speaks very well. i.e articulate. Guys stop hating and maybe you’ll learn something.

  • marvel December 21, 2012 at 11:22 am

Toke’s accent is fine. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. You guys love to nitpick and I tend to side with the underdog. So, when she says ‘off’ the light and i have ‘offed’ it, she will be authentically Naija. Stop picking on her. If she feels the males are morons, it is her opinion.

  • Deep Soul December 21, 2012 at 11:46 am

I watched Toke once interview Chigurl and I hated her. Instantly. She was just painfully fake.

But I must confess, this video here wasn’t so bad..yeah, it had a bit of the fake accent but I think it was quite manageable. I also like the fact that her personality shone and it didn’t come across to me as fake. She seems like a witty, sharp and well-spoken girl who has got her basic tenses together (same CANNOT be said for a lot of Nigerian girls). And besides, she made mad sense about the BB vs Dating.

Before the demise of my dating life (R.I.P – I just recently got married), I HATED the effect BBM had on guys and how much effort they put in. I love(d) effort. As a result, I made it a rule not to give my pin out to guys I liked. If you couldn’t be bothered to call me, good riddance to bad rubbish. Women these days just make it way too damn easy for guys…..and guess what? The easier you are, the less value is placed on you (atleast most times). I can’t blame the guys. Ladies, get ur shit together!!!

  • Toh-key December 21, 2012 at 12:08 pm

Hi guys, my name is To-keh. I was driving down to Leh-key. LMAO. I couldn’t get past that bit, and I stopped the video. Please people, is that normal? Or even acceptable. In fact, as from today, me sef will start calling it Lehkey, so I can feel among. Mschew. Don’t worry, Toke, it is your brothers that are morons, and all your male relatives that are morons. If you at least tried to come across as genuine, decent guys will approach you. The morons looooooove the fake chicks. So there you have it. That’s why men are morons. LOL.

  • dobz December 21, 2012 at 3:09 pm

sincerely there isn’t much wrong with her accent. What I think is Toke just doesn’t come off as being real, she doesn’t have that “thing” that makes a celebrity endearing and that’s what people can see through. Toke needs to take time out from all these attempts at overexposure and go back and refocus and re-strategize on what she really wants out of her toke brand. cos for now all it seems is that she wants to be popular by force. No beef

  • Dee December 21, 2012 at 3:38 pm

Important points to note: From the male perspective
    1) Toke is a star, like it or not.
2)Let he who is without sin cast the first stone; remember Oprah Winfrey and how she called most Nigerians 419ers?
    3) However, It is evidently wrong for Toke to generalise & use strong words, calling men morons. It’s highly offensive (think before you talk please)
    4) Regarding the accent, she speaks articulately. No issues whatsoever understanding what she was saying.
5)Nowadays, we young people 18-35 don’t want to compromise or sacrifice in relationships. Everyone is just out for what they can get, hence sometimes u ask urself is love beautiful? or is it a bastard?
    6) we (both men and women) need to see how we can improve our relationships by starting with the man/woman in the mirror.

  • jay December 21, 2012 at 3:58 pm

as usual, people always miss the point.like someone said earlier, its the message not the messenger.in my opinion she made a point.however she chooses to represent herself is her business,if u aren’t going to be any different from her if all the opportunities she has,was given to u,then u can talk, but i so doubt that, all those talking negative wouldn’t be any different.so leave the chic alone and appreciate ones success.

  • Ade O December 21, 2012 at 8:28 pm

I feel insulted as a MAN…is her DAD a moron too?? KMFT

    • Uche December 21, 2012 at 11:05 pm

Lol. We may as well add all her colleagues that are guys, her male friends, her brothers, her uncles, her cousins, her friend’s boyfriends, her sisters’ boyfriends. Have I missed out anyone? Does she have nephews?

  • partyrider December 21, 2012 at 9:29 pm

152 comments so far and 98% of the comments are talking about accent, hair,this,that,blahh..dont you guys get tired with all unnecessary criticism and negativity ? dont you? it must be exhausting.and i can bet my left arm that its the ladies..come on. smh

ON THE TOPIC: i loved it.true instant messaging and social media in general has a way of killing the dating vibe.i
Toke it was interesting and i personally want to watch more.i hope you make it weekly.

ps: we should all learn to see the good in people, even those we do not like. #bepositive

  • Ade O December 22, 2012 at 12:15 am

It appears to me she is just bitter at the fact that people around her are possibly in a happy relationship and she isn’t. Why must you call MEN moron because they ask you for your pin instead of number. A PIN is still a means of contact. As a man, Id rather ask a girl for her pin than her number, have a chit chat before any voice calling. That can be a way of you determining certain traits in the person in terms of how they build a conversation et al. It kinda gives you an insight into what kinda person you are dealing with then you know how to ‘manage’ yourself and interaction with them..Jheezzee its not all doom and gloom with men…!!! Give us a break!!!

  • sefi-ann December 22, 2012 at 12:27 am

lmaooo, toke, 153 comments? you are doing something right. haters gonna hate.

  • SisiOge December 22, 2012 at 12:29 am

The word hater is overused. BBM has never gotten me into trouble. Be picky about the people you give your pin to and you shouldn’t have a problem. I quite prefer BBM chats to phone calls for some reason anyway. You attract what you focus your mind on. Stop automatically assuming every guy that chats you up has a negative ulterior motive. Just my thoughts guys.

  • EfKay December 22, 2012 at 3:49 am

I definitely had fun watching this. And hard as I tried I couldn’t hear any fake accent. In fact she sounded very Nigerian to me. Nigerians just like to criticize. Abi you want her to talk like Jenifa? Hian! Anyway, good work Toke though I don’t think you should call men morons – you’re trying to bag one after all. That said, I look forward to the next one.

  • Triangle December 22, 2012 at 9:02 am

Maybe it’s just me but if a guy walks up to me and demands my number, I’ll most likely eye him and walk away. I have a huge issue with giving my number out. I’ll hate it if I don’t like you later on, u keep calling and stalking me. Am I supposed to change my 6yr old number because of a guy? My BBM pin on the other hand is something I don’t hv an issue with. I can always delete the said contact and ignore future invitations for good measure and that is that!
I think guys have found this trick and now request for pins instead of numbers. There’s a guy chatting me up right now, I met him recently and exchanged pins. I won’t give him my number till I’ve assured myself of his character, and I keep warning when he pings me unnecessarily or says stuff I don’t like that hope he knws if I delete him that’s it for life. Its keeps them on their toes if u ask me. When I’m ready to give out my number, I will.
The problem only arises when he finally gets my number and still substitutes same for BB. I remember my Ex-bf used to text me out of the blue, I’ll complain why he was wasting his 5naira instead of pinging, and he’ll say he just felt like.
So, Toke the problem is with the kind of men you attract. A man who’s into you will call, text, tweet, whatsapp, ping etc you. No biggie

    • Fums December 22, 2012 at 12:31 pm

How does her accent affect u darling ? If hers sucks u then go back to primary skool and learn English phonetics .

  • Ajoke December 22, 2012 at 2:48 pm

May I suggest you change the camera angle? Can’t see past the nostrils….

    • intheoverseas December 22, 2012 at 10:59 pm

Lol! that was the ONLY opinion I had in this whole “mata”

  • Yinka December 22, 2012 at 5:23 pm

i dont get why people are complaining about her accent….shes sounds just fine to me

  • jyde December 22, 2012 at 5:24 pm

Hi T, i heard you loud and clear jare, dont mind those yeye guys joor.
I dont want your BB pin. May i have your phone number instead?

  • Funmi December 22, 2012 at 6:13 pm

What has she done wrong? Haba! Kilode! Toke, u made a lot of sense. I quite agree with you. Keep it up girl. There is nothing wrong with the accent. Bad belle.

  • sisi oge December 22, 2012 at 7:17 pm

Please hoe can I ‘like’ the comment above ?

Also, Nigerians calling this a fake British accent need a visa to travel so they can hear what a British accent sounds like since you don’t have TVs in your homes.

A topic that generates conspiracy…well done gurl you’re off to a good start. Soon YouTube will start paying you money.

Are all men morons ? NO…well just some of the time….

  • sisi oge December 22, 2012 at 7:18 pm

    *how

  • Angel Deco December 22, 2012 at 7:25 pm

I fink both d ish of d message, her conduct, terminologies used, accent n apperance av been tackled. Points noted, faults accepted n tanks 4d good part. Let’s just continue being us, NIGERIANS!!!

  • lope December 23, 2012 at 1:24 am

I so agree with you Toke! Men r not interested in wooing anymore!!! Am single and still looking for a man that would go through the usual means to get my attention. God job Toke! love from London….

  • Sheila December 23, 2012 at 12:08 pm

No need to take offense to the word moron. Its probably just to catch your eye and make you click the link. And it worked! Nice one, I think its honest but not disrespcful to men. She comes across as down to earth and her voice and accent are nice. Thumbs up.

  • Sylvia December 24, 2012 at 2:13 am

I quite agree with her though, whatever happened to making the effort. If you want something go for it fully and not half cut measures.

    This lady sounds very annoying.

  • Deedee December 24, 2012 at 11:43 am

Wow, naija people can exaggerate things sometimes sha, this girl sounds very normal to me, i don’t really know her but she seems down-to-earth.

  • Jamce December 24, 2012 at 1:06 pm

Hmmmmm. Morons! For the “smart” women who want to be receiving love letters in these days of technology, please go and bring back NIPOST to its glory days so that the letters can flow. On a more serious note, is it the extent of phone calls or efforts, gifts, money expended by a man to woo a woman that determines her worth? What is wrong with a BB chat as a means of communication rather than a voice call, text message or letter. What happened to relationships that started from social media like Facebook and blossomed into happy marriages. Just like anything on earth, it is a matter of choice and convenience and Toke has no right to sit in judgment and calling men morons. It is not everyone who wants his/her phone ringing all the time. So if a lady decides to give a man her PIN, does that makes her a moron or she has cheapened herself? The comment by Triangle brings a different perspective because it is easier to do away with stalkers. For those who want to wait for old time wooing and dating techniques, methodologies and processes, good luck to you. My take is let everyone do what they feel is good, convenient and works for them. If you don’t want you PIN or phone number or e-mail address out, just decline when asked and don’t call people morons. Cheers.

    • dede December 28, 2012 at 3:39 am

Sweets, I belive when Toke started this video, she said she will be discussing her thoughts 0 meaning her opinion. Does that mean she’s right? HELL NO but it’s her opinion and in her opinion she is right. It’s meant for people to relate to or suggest a second opinion. Constructive arguments can be made w/out tearing down someone. That’s why it’s Toke’s blog.

  • newbie December 25, 2012 at 5:04 am

    Merry Christmas, everybody!

I liked the video abeg. She made a lot of sense in it. By the way chic does not have any British accent – real or imagined. Neither did she sound fake. She was articulate and enunciated her words clearly. We’re not robots so we don’t all have to sound identical just because we’re all Nigerians. A person is the sum total of all their life experiences and as our life experiences differ from person to person, our cultural attributes would; language being one of them. If I didn’t hear her name and was listening to her rant as an audio, I would not in a million years mistake her for anything beyond a young Nigerian woman.

  • Boo December 26, 2012 at 4:21 am

This is the problem with naija.
    1. Pple do not know how to offer constructive criticism. the message might be valid, but the delivery is wrong.

    2. People do not know how to receive constructive criticism. Noone is perfect so there’ll always be room for improvement. If you truly want to grow, you’ll listen to both the good and bad.
    3. People do not read to understand. They scan the message for trigger words, forming their comeback responses before they have gotten to the last word.
    4. People are too emotional. They let emotions cloud their judgement. Yyou are my friend so everything that comes out of my mouth must be great(even if it means me lying). You are my enemy so everything that comes out of my mouth must be evil (even if it means me lying)

  • dede December 28, 2012 at 3:35 am

Hi Toke, I think the best thing to do is tell the guys you don’t have a BB or just get off BB. If he’s really into you, he’ll ask for your number. I’m recently married and learnt a thing or two before meeting my husband. A man who wants you will go out of his way to find you. It’s also important for you to know that a real man (proper husband material) cares less about hair,make-up,extensions etc so never worry that you might loose out on a guy if you don’t give him your pin. Looking forward to your next video.

Meanwhile, Naija peeps can HATE….han han. She clearly doesn’t sound british. She is pronouncing her words well.

  • Dee December 28, 2012 at 11:32 pm

I actually enjoyed this, well done for speaking your mind. Looking forward to more videos!

  • anaonymous December 29, 2012 at 9:21 pm

I think that people have had successful relatioships and marriages after meeting via social sites or less I am missing the point of the ‘bbm ruining dating lives’.. other than that, nice accent Toke.

  • zainab January 1, 2013 at 7:29 am

all it is, is a refined nigerian accent, now, whether she is putting it on or not is something else. liking the girl or not is irrelevant. this ISNT british. stop airing your backwardness here, get a visa of sumthing and go and hear real british accents.

  • Janey January 2, 2013 at 10:40 am

am i the only one that noticed the *uneven* knuckles?

  • Purpleicious Babe January 3, 2013 at 1:46 am

Based on the comments n reviews… she can surely feature a Part 2.

  • Semira January 3, 2013 at 6:51 pm

I think it takes a lot to try something new and that is exactly what Toke did even if she wasn’t sure of how the new “concept” will be received. Instead of critising her, why not applaud her for taking a “step” and trying something new. I can bet most haters here have not tried anything new since 1990.

    Thumbs Up Toke.

  • jyde January 3, 2013 at 10:37 pm

On a more serious note for once,us morons ask for BB pins coz its an easy shortcut and less expensive. We float from one pin to the next, till we get lucky,so ladies, make us work harder by saying no.At first that is,then make us call you instead.
If you give us morons an inch we are bound to take several miles.
We are creatures of habbit, and when it comes to women us morons all share the same weakness. You ladies have to bear with us,as we are simply taking advantage of our toys as dating aids.Or just dont give us morons your BBpins.
MORONS, well toke is a bit harsh, but hey, weve all been called worse by angry women, im sure.I have.We morons develop thick skins,we just think of the pleasures to come.
Whats that saying abt sticks and stones?but names wont hurt me?
TOKE is adding a nice flavour to things, and helping us understand a bit better how women tick.
Toke keep it comin sis,its refreshing and insightful.Im serious.Keep it comin girl.
Its a new day folks,so if u no like am go make your own video now.Just quit hating joor, weve got so much potential, instead we dey dere dey yabb and hate.
Na wa 4dis our nijah O.
    I close mouth joor.

  • atm January 11, 2013 at 10:46 pm

Men have been called ‘morons’ countless times. while its probably harsh in its meaning, in the general context I believe that it just means ‘why do men act clueless’, ‘why don’t men grab’, ‘why don’t they just understand what women like and do not like’(another matter), ‘why don’t they get it’ etc.

  • Bibi January 15, 2013 at 7:36 pm

You don’t know what a British accent sounds like then!!!! I love this vblog, makes sense die!!!!

  • Pamilerin January 22, 2013 at 12:23 pm

if you follow Toke on twitter am sure you ll notice she was dumped some weeks back.Have been waiting for this vent.

  • Lami January 24, 2013 at 7:47 pm

I say continue the series darling

  • Obialunanma February 1, 2013 at 1:44 am

Tbh, this article/post has attracted the greatest number of comments I have ever noted on BN. The humour to it is- A great deal of the comments have simply denigrated and dismembered Toke Makinwa’s person in different versions of the English language(grammar, sentence construction and spellings). Who decides she is ‘faking’ an accent? And if this is the fake, which is the original? If she spoke just like the Duchess of Cambridge would have, una for accept am? All I hear is a Nigerian woman who has a very acceptable command of the English language and can’t help but have a couple of inflections possibly a reflection of where she’s been or where she wishes to be. LOL! It is a rarity to hear a Nigerian under 30 speak English without significant grammatical errors and for dodging those potholes, I give kudos to Toke. She definitely made a lot of ‘sense’ with respect to the laziness of today’s dating landscape. Please take the message and don’t crucify the messenger.
p/s : It’s my first time of listening to Toke Makinwa. Dunno what her antecedents are.

  • amarachi February 1, 2013 at 10:55 am

well she sounds 9ic 2 me

  • Oga A'the Thorpe April 12, 2013 at 3:07 am

…lmao. Naija folks no go kill persin. I read a number of comments before finally watching the video. I was definitely getting ready to cringe….but to my relief….:).

Yeah ol’gal was code-mixing and switching foneh style….but I didnt think it was cringe-worthy. “Fonehing” or enunciating properly is a work in progress, for anyone..especially if it wasn’t learned early in life, so from time to time there’ll be “slip ups”. If she is an OAP and trying to appeal to more than just the Nigerian audience, I think its important to enunciate properly (which she is doing). Even if it isnt for professional reasons, it could be personal…and thats perfectly fine, too. Abi, yall want spoken english that needs subtitles? Lol.

Per the topic, errrrr no comment. Only listened to the first 2 mins.

    Yall be easy.
    …eneseedysee.
