He Wanted What P-Square Worked for 7 years to Achieve…in 1 Year! Jude “Engees” Okoye sheds light on the MayD Split

PSquare MayD
Anyone who knows the P-Square story will tell you that Jude “Engees” Okoye is a music industry genius! From producing tracks to directing videos and managing the superstar duo’s career, he’s the man behind the music.

Jude-OkoyeLast year, everyone reacted with shock when it was announced that MayD and Square Records had parted ways. The official statement released during the split made it clear that the reason for the split was “irreconcilable differences“…sounds like a divorce!

While in Uganda a few weeks ago, Jude shed light on the real reason for the split. Based on Jude’s response, it seems as though when it was time to sign the official contract, MayD’s demands superseded what Square Records was willing to offer.

Watch the video from HiponTV below.

If Jude’s statement is true then it was a good decision to let him go.

  • paulmirabilis January 12, 2013 at 2:04 pm

This Jude guy na idiot sha…I still don’t understand what he meant by “giving back to the society”..is signing an artiste a charitable deed? For God’s sake MAYD is super talented and you guys were not doing him any favor because he also worked hard for you.His input in your last album was tremendous. Are you not supposed to “tush” the guy up as a signee on your label?I learnt that guy was still living in his parents house and had no car when he was with you guys.Is a car and furnished rented apartment too much for him to ask? This is not the first time you guys are doing this, waje was also a victim of your cruelty.Upon all this rubbish, this guy never said anything negative about you or your label. You guys should just watch your back

    • CovertNigerian January 12, 2013 at 2:53 pm

Genius! If you listen carefully, the reference to giving back was in relation to J.Martins and Brackett. He said they helped those guys and let them go on with their careers without expecting them to sign contracts. If true, that is a kindness, unless you define kindness differently. As per tushing up MayD, you refer to details that are not specifically mentioned in the clip – how certain are you that the they were unwilling to get him a car or apartment, maybe the sticky point was the kind of house or car he wanted – I DON’T KNOW EITHER, so what’s your source of information? On Waje, I’ve heard murmurs, can’t say anything about that – I try not to base my opinions and public comments on rumours. If what Jude said is true, then it’s quite possible that MayD has been silent because he realizes he shot himself in the foot by demanding too much before he even had an album out.
I also want to point out that I’ve observed as ought to be the case, that Jude (the manager after all) appears to make the business related decisions and is the one that responds to these issues. So try if you may, to make a distinction between him and his brothers who perform the music and whom it is quite possible have nothing to do with the business decisions.

Abeg abeg have you seen p-square’s crew? They are surrounded by strictly family. All the people I saw around them in their tent at a performance were family, even the dancers. I don’t think they like to spread their wealth. What they did to May D was very cruel especially the taking down of his video from YouTube. That’s nonsense. It took me over a year to realise it was Waje on the do me track. It’s all about money for them. They didn’t come to count bridge in Lagos.

    • Jia January 13, 2013 at 12:18 pm

You act like you know what you’re talking about. You are a typical greedy Nigerian who feels that you shouldn’t reap what you haven’t sown. It’s only in Nigeria where I see employees feel that they deserve to make almost the same amount as their boss.
Do you think that Rihanna had a house of her own when she released Pon De Replay? She mentioned she was still living at her mother’s old house. Wizkid was living with Banky for a while before he got his house. Been a signee doesnt mean you live like a king, you have to earn it…Psquare has worked and toiled for many years.
Also, PSquare has given back to the society by signing an artist to their record label. They have every right to not sign anyone to their label but they gave MayD a chance. You were introduced to MayD through PSquare. So what are you saying? Giving back doesn’t only mean bringing rice, indomie, yam, and oil to the less privileged..There are many ways that you give back to the society.
someone’s house and take everything work

Bros why your blood dey hot? I beg park well!!!!!!! B good, do on to others

@Jia, u took d words out of my mouth. Well said!!!

      • Damochedxb January 15, 2013 at 6:24 pm

Jia, Signing an artiste whom on the long run you could benefiting from is not GIVING BACK TO THE SOCIETY, it is an INVESTMENT. Get your head out of P-squares ass and give it a good shake. How naive of you to actually believe May D demanded to have the same thing P-square have worked for in 7 years, read btw the lines. Jude Okoye could aswell be exaggerating here…Do you even know if they allowed the boy to live with them? None of us knows for sure, until we hear from both sides. But from all indications, i am convinced they didnt offer him a decent contract. For Goodness sake, D prince of Mo hits got a Range Rover even before he had an album, even K switch had one too.. What is the essence of paving the way for younger up coming artiste if you also want them to suffer the same way u did before they make it? What backwards thinking is that??.. I am sure they are envious of young cats like Davido and Wizkid who in a short while have amerced so much wealth. P square with this kind of chop alone attitude, it wont be long before u guys fade into thing air, then u will regret not signing any talented artiste to fall back on when ur music stops selling. You think u are smart, at the end of the day u will realize how dumb u were… Banky has made more money being a record label Exec. than being an artiste.

  • Miss T January 12, 2013 at 2:14 pm

I will believe this because many young Nigerians want to climb up very very fast!

  • nich January 12, 2013 at 2:20 pm

I always suspected that was the situation

  • victor onyeji January 12, 2013 at 2:35 pm

  • sam January 12, 2013 at 2:56 pm

Can you guys stop commenting without hearing from MayD side…but this guys version,do not add up…the guys time will come

  • jadesola January 12, 2013 at 3:12 pm

but to bbe honest mayd is good i love he’s music

  • jadesola January 12, 2013 at 3:18 pm

besides p square records are stingy, at least they should hv bought him a car or looked for a house to put him in, we all know Mayd is good and probably has a better singing voice than p square. who does not know that as a record label your suppose to take care of your artist. Always keeping all the money to them selves no wonder its very difficult for them to sign artist….. stingy people !

    • CovertNigerian January 12, 2013 at 5:23 pm

MayD’s talent is not in doubt. If they did not believe he had talent they would not have attempted to sign him in the first place. Unfortunately, the world is full of talented but sadly unsuccessful singers. Square records is a business, and every good business man knows that even the best idea can fail or be less successful than anticipated. Psquare took him to the US for their video shoot of a massive hit in which he made a great contribution, featured him him on more than one track on their album, he was on stage with them in Paris and goodness knows where else. More than a house and car, this exposure are the reasons we know MayD in the first place. Whatever we say about the way we think he was treated, there’s no denying that they gave him a great platform to get himself out. It would be interesting to hear from MayD, things are rarely as simple as they seem. Regardless, I think MayD has big things ahead of him and I hope both parties have learnt important lessons from the whole thing.

      • i no send January 12, 2013 at 6:22 pm

i like this analysis …tho i was initially angry with judes statement but ur expose has given me a new perspective….

    • Purpleicious Babe January 13, 2013 at 12:09 am

SOrry oo. not trying to attack the comment nor am i siding any of the parties involved. But pls in a contract there are terms and conditions? We dont know what went on i.e. cars/houses? If they chose to say NO, hows that being stingy??? I dont gerrit .. is not your hardwork and profits made that gets you your car etc??

Anyhhoo, its not like I know anything about the deep nonsense that goes on in the music industry. All I can say is, ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY. People need to chill on cars, houses all of these superficial status o jare.. kia. its does my head in….

Whatever happens, you cant call them stingy ahah, is it by force for anyone to buy a car?? Afterall, its their sweat, hardwork and money etc. Besides, MAyD has moved on n if he hasnt o well. TOUGH. Life is a learning process. kia we should chill on name callings abeg..

      We live to learn. pls.

  • NNENNE January 12, 2013 at 3:39 pm

Good luck to both parties. The deed is already done!

  • Ayomide January 12, 2013 at 4:04 pm

May D ought to have been patient and learn’t the ropes from P-square and used this period of tutelage to develop a working portfolio. They gave him a platform. There was a time p- square were skinny boys pushing to succeed. He ought to have learn’t the delayed gratification from them.

  • CIA OPERATIVE #2134ERBX January 12, 2013 at 4:19 pm

i really think that mayD is a funny dude… u just dropped two “hit” singles and u want the whole world in return. If its like that, i will go and drop my own singles na. you guys that are complaining about square records being stingy… do y’all know the business of music? pls lets leave them alone

  • Diaz January 12, 2013 at 4:47 pm

You lot man MayD can sing no doubt but if that’s really what happen then that’s greed. Take for instance wizkid didn’t be just buy his car and house after how many years with EME. Ice prince nko after how many years with chocolate city he just bought his house. If only he had patience

    • Hyuy January 13, 2013 at 6:20 am

Pls, do not say what u no nothing about the two xamples you mentioned genuinely care for their team. Chocboys are more like brothers and they carry each other along. Y hasn’t the Ara guy left till date? Same goes for EME records. But, all psquares pple always seem to leave atsomepoint…

  • adaeze January 12, 2013 at 7:59 pm

This is trash as far as i’m concerned. So dude released 2 major hit singles and was still jumping bus? Mayd started hustling a long time ago so it’s not like he was looking for sudden success. Imagine going to perform at big shows in Eko hotel then he’d now be cabbing or busing home after lol. Infant Jude shouldn’t have given this interview because that sounds like a very lame reason to let go of an artist. They now stopped showing his ile -ijo video on soundcity and deleted his YouTube channel. Trash! How can someone sing to major songs for u and then you refuse to give the person a record contract and you’re here chatting like you were doing him a favour. Is square records a charity organization? Infact i’m angry, so they wanted Mayd to wait for 7 years BY FORCE before growing abi like they where not making money from his numerous performances already.

  • Deedee January 12, 2013 at 8:51 pm

    Who cares, next pls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • candy January 12, 2013 at 9:45 pm

  • HABBA January 12, 2013 at 11:30 pm

is it bad to want a car after you worked had to release two smash songs? PSquare were trying to do him 419! i am sure they were taking too much money for manager fees! MAYD! BIG UPs bruv! you shall survive! they have even takin away his song ILE IJO from the internet! Karma is real oo! PSquare better be careful! MAYD plz go join Marvin records or EME

  • lorenz January 12, 2013 at 11:34 pm

Who’s talking about giving him an opportunity. Does that mean they should exploit him? when you sign an artiste, u make him comfy.. And who said he just started hustling. Jude’s arrogance can never let him manage any artiste successfully. Lets wait and see

  • Truth be told January 13, 2013 at 3:35 am

I support Jude jare. I dont think he was arrogant and I believed they also offered him something good. It’s just like working as a contractor. After a while, when the company wants to sign you on and you ask for what is above the payscale, they’ll most likely say goodbye and part ways with you especially if they can survive without you. And it was probably an agreement to remove his videos et al. Anyway all the best to them sha.

  • Keepingitreal January 13, 2013 at 3:50 am

@ CoverNigerian, you made a lot of sense. Really hope they all learnt their lessons from this.

this is typical of Africa you think that everything we use today it belongs to us there’s been those who sacrifice for others so I know that you love p_square the fruits of yours work you aurer one part and the rest will be the one that you go through when you are a pioneer in africa as it is understood that unity is strength and longer boy has talent demand that you be made russel simmons when he want to sign an artist if you’re not ready to share your work with others or experience and facilitate their thing then you start not in the production of artists

  • Chili January 13, 2013 at 1:03 pm

First of all Jude Okoye is nothing close to a music industry genius. I am shocked that Belanaia cannot seperate fact from fiction. Ask anyone in the industry, he makes the editor put his name as the director of the videos. He doesnt direct anything. He might be their business manager or financial muscle man but other than that….
Secondly I dont understand his point in this interview; is he saying May D should wait for 7 or 8 years before he gets anything? If he is being sincere why did he not state exactly what the bone of contention was/is? I dont think anyone would be brazen enough to ask for ‘everything P Square has’. Also when they brought him on board did they have no clear idea or information about what the relationship would entail benefit-wise?
The arrogance of these twins and their brother is very well-known so I sm not satisfied with this smokescreen of an explanation.

    • honey January 13, 2013 at 10:26 pm

goodpoint……….exactly all i want to. there should be more to the story than houses and cars,i think he put that out there to trash the boy and make it seem like, all mayd wanted was material things………..regardless,i think they did that boy wrooooooooooooong PERIOD!!!!

    • dede January 13, 2013 at 10:43 pm

Well said!!! It just doesn’t add up. There’s more to the break-up and Jude okoye isn’t sying the truth.

  • janded January 14, 2013 at 3:18 am

Jude is obviously not thinking like a business man, he is being sentimental.
May D is the next level, ‘Chop my Money’ & ‘Ile Ijo’ should have given them a better insight to the star May D would become.
P Square got some benefits when they signed to Konvict music. They helped change and pave the way for artist in Nigeria and its a shame that one of the most successful managers in Nigeria can air such empty sentiments as against informed business decision about an Artist who gave P Square their biggest hit out of Africa (we all know May D made ‘Chop my Money’ …Jackie Chan …Wuasha!)

@adaeze thank u very much……….. besides peter and paul who is jude managing……ice prince and whiz kid waited but were not suffering…..

  • africannubian January 14, 2013 at 12:27 pm

its only in Nigeria and especially with jude okoye’s warped sense of judgement that determination ,ambition is seen as a negative vice…i am sure if he was running eme or hkn gang davido and whizz kid will still be polishing his and his brother’s shoes and carrying their bags..now that he has sacked the guy has that negatively or positively affected may d’s career?

    • Ile Ijo May 25, 2013 at 5:16 am

Of course another door would open for may d because that guy flow to the beat than psqure to me. Hes is out of the deep…. who knows what would be in the contract whereby May D turn him down… the contract might shows they want to use him more….. Do you think another record company wont grab that guy?? they would, they would be surprise what hes going to bring out next. it would be a BOMB.

  • Dlapikin January 14, 2013 at 1:26 pm

Just by saying such things on air he is hurting MayD’s reputation as an artist and that should serve as a warning to anyone who signs to them. When you sign an artist you have a responsability to not only help him artistically but also to his welfare. Exposure means nothing if after a show at Eko you go home on the bus to soak gari. It is very low for him to discuss this mater the way he did.

  • Hmmm January 14, 2013 at 7:34 pm

Well, I am in the entertainment business and I know a lot of stuff happens that concerns money. I’m not on anyone’s side here because we haven’t even heard from May-D. May D was given more exposure by P-Square ( no doubt about that) but this is one reason why artistes must always endeavour to know what’s in it for them b4 they get involved with labels. And that is where contracts come in. Everything should have been in clear black and white before they started working together. This happens all the time, even with smaller labels that nobody know about. Just as he had the right to request certain stuff, P-Square also had the right to reject his requests if they felt it was beyond them. A lot of these new artistes are greedy. They don’t want to pay their dues. Unfortunately in EVERY aspect of life, whether academics, the corporate world or entertainment, you must work hard to succeed. It’s just a fact of life.

  • Damochedxb January 15, 2013 at 6:52 pm

For those of you saying May D should have been patient, patience is a virtue, delayed gratification blah blah blah, you seem to forget that he didnt leave SQUARE RECORDS, he was SACKED cos he dared to ask for something decent for himself. I was not there, but i can just picture Jude calling for a dissolution immediately he saw May D’s demands, like the poor dude didnt even get the chance to negotiate anything before he heard on the news that he had been bounced. SMH! They had no intentions to sign anybody, they are okay chopping it all alone..And i have no qualms with that, but coming here to further defame May D is just classless and wickedness. P-square aint God, who go blow go blow, just shut up and continue chopping your money alone…

  • Brown January 18, 2013 at 3:45 pm

you know what is sad? not psquare..Jude himself. obviously mayd had a huge imput on writing their songs and fyi the maximum exposure was attained cause they needed him to sing his part on their songs. nothing but selfish, sencesless, imature and poverty mentality . fyi psquare also had same problems with jmartin. was it jays fault as well? you dont give people their deserved proops doesnt make you look better than you think you re. one day they would be old used up brands and they wont be getting love from no one. being so blind not to see this is just an envious and selfish act purposly done by the so called square records. whatever goes up must come down. step on toes when you up dere and when your down people wld literally sheet on your freaking head.

    • Ile Ijo May 25, 2013 at 5:35 am

Good point… that Jude should learn from DRe…. you don’t push out stars like that… The guy is a hot cake and you try to talk him up….. Hey May D this is what we would offer to you let me know if that’s fine… You talk him up…. He made 2 damn hot album and they sure make money from it….. sign him up get yours and give him what he deserve…. don’t say he took someone 7 years….. you only think of sacking him right away without thinking on it or talk him down…. that’s damn pride. And who is giving the contract? who knows whats in the contract that may d felt that ain´t right.
