Goodluck Jonathan Reverses Decision to Rename UNILAG

After several months of deliberation and resistance from stakeholders, President Goodluck Jonathan has reversed his decision to rename the University of Lagos.

Last year, during the Democracy Day broadcast on May 29th, President Jonathan had announced that the name University of Lagos would be changed to Moshood Abiola University in honour of late M.K.O Abiola. This news was met with resistance from students and staff of the University who protested the name change.

Despite the protests, President Jonathan insisted on the name change and sent a bill to the Senate and the House of Representatives seeking endorsement to rename the University about a week after making the announcement. Since then, there has been court sittings and ongoing deliberations on the matter.

However, Punch reports that the Chairman of the University Council, Professor Jerry Gana disclosed in Abuja on Thursday that the President has finally reversed his decision.
