BN Beauty: Looking for New Ways to Style your Braids? Check out 5 Great Options

How to style box Braids - BellaNaija - May2013STOP! Before you take out your braids out of boredom, let us Inspire you to keep them on. I’ve been moving about more often lately and I have been seeing a lot of inspiring braided hairstyles. From wrapping  to braiding, Nigerian girls, I have to say can be quite innovative with the style. As tempted as I was to take a shot of their unique styles, I couldn’t but I’ve brought you the next best thing.

Quick side note before I go on, you should know that braids are called different names. They are called loose braids, Poetic Justice braids or Single braids. Box braids are called so because of the pattern they form when parting your natural hair i.e square patterns. Any other pattern would probably be the poetic justice braids (which are usually jumbo sized) or your usual loose braids that vary in size and pattern. Okay..moving on.

Don’t know how to style yours? Well here are 10 unique ways to style your braids and keep it looking different and fresh. For all the natural sistas out there, braiding your hair can be a great way to protect your hair while transitioning or otherwise. Now lets get started;

What you Would Need
– A lots of Bobby Pins/ Hair pins
– Water (In a spray bottle)
– Olive oil or any other type of moisturiser (optional)

1. Cute Updo

Now to kick off this series of tutorials I decided to put up this easy tutorial. This is a simple up-do that can be easily pulled off. If you’re a simple girl that just wants something you can have on to a party or the beach…then you can definitely go for the up-do. Beauty & Hair Blogger Jennifer Olaleye shows us here how to pull this off with braided sides.

2. The Fishtail Side Bang

This braided hairstyle is really cute for work, weddings, the beach…basically anywhere. You would only need a couple of bobby pins, some water in a spray bottle to keep your hair moisturised and please don’t forget not to make the braid too tight so you do not stress your roots. Here Tiarra Monet shows us how it’s done.

3. The Braided MoHawk

How to Style Box Braids - BellaNaija - May2013001

This hairstyle is a little like the other one but with a normal braid. You can be creative with it; like weave to the side instead of the centre or do twists instead of a braid…to add your own personal touch to it. Watch this Youtube video from Tiarra Monet figure out how its done.

4. The Twisted Lady Style

Now this hairstyle had me dancing and thinking of a mash up between Brandy and Erikah Badu. It has this vintage feel to it that makes it stand out. And it isn’t that hard to do. Keep watching Delightfulface Watson to learn how to pull off this hairstyle (Okay, and you can dance too).

5. The Twisted Side braid

I’ve been wearing braids for years now… and found out that the secret to maintaining your hairline is to take our the front row. It is hard to maintain once done, because I have to twist it almost every day; but it has been worth it… no receding hairline.

  • The Mane Captain June 21, 2013 at 6:18 am

all cute hairstyles, but I don’t think I have the confidence to rock such BOLD hairstyles! And did I mention they’re heavy? It’s like walking around with a load on your head!
Please don’t try these styles if you have weak hairline! Unless your hair is parted very big
Updos are great with lighter hair such as marley hair or kinky braid.
