Nelson Mandela Reportedly in “Permanent Vegetative State” | Family Advised to Switch off Life Support

Nelson Mandela

Sad news reaching us now that Nelson Mandela is in a permanent vegetative state.

According to court documents obtained by the AFP news agency, doctors treating the South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician, advised his family to turn off his life support machine a week ago.

The court filling dated Wednesday 26th June 2013 read “He is in a permanent vegetative state and is assisted in breathing by a life support machine.”

Aljazeera reports that Mac Maharaj, a spokesman for President Jacob Zuma of South Africa declined to comment on the documents.

Citing doctor-patient confidentiality, he told AFP that “We don’t have a comment on that. We have indicated from our point of view that based on the doctors’ report, the condition of the former president is critical but stable at this stage.”

If you recall, Madiba (who turns 95 later this month) was rushed to the hospital with a recurring lung infection on Saturday 8th June 2013.

Say A Prayer For Mandela.

Why do I have a feeling if they are planning to turn of the life support machine, they might want to wait till his birthday or after?

He has made his mark in the history onhis generation and even ours. His legacy would always be a referral point for all in Africa. We r mere mortals madiba is a man like us and the chances of an old man survivin such infections is actually slim.I wish he recovers from it though..

The family is just trying to hold on to him for as long as possible because they know that without him they are nothing, bunch of twats ,they are probably trying to wait until after his birthday to milk the Mandela name some more .

I was privileged to visit his prison cell on Robben Island where he was for 27 years. It was a very humbling experience. The most touching message for me was that upon his release from jail, he preached a gospel of reconcilliation instead of bitterness or revenge.

  • Metche July 5, 2013 at 10:18 am

God please grant him few more years. Wishing him quick recovery.
