Dear FVO,

I recently moved to Port Harcourt from Lagos and had to move my 4 year old event planning company. Can you advise me on how I can develop relationships with the vendors in this new city bearing in mind I have to break the already existing ‘clique.’

Dear David,

Moving your business from one city to the other can prove to be challenging and scary but if you survived 4 years in this business you can survive anything right?

I think it’s all down to your relationships, start by asking around and searching online for vendors in the area, attend as many events as possible to get a feel of the event industry in your new city, you will also get to see the vendors in their element, that’s the ultimate test!

Next thing to do is to call them and arrange to meet with them over a drink or coffee when you can, you need to connect with your vendors and the chemistry has to be right.

Introduce yourself and ask to see some of their work to be sure they are up to your desired standards, show them some of your work too so they have an idea of what you have done in the past to show them what you expect, before you know it, you would have not only created a new database of vendors in your new city, you may have developed great relationships too.

Send me another e-mail in a few months, I’d like to know how it went!
