It’s awards season and quite a number of us will be looking out for step-by-step guides to recreating the makeup looks celebs will be rocking. Let’s be honest, there will be some mistakes here and there because as much as we follow those guides there are no specifics.

At one point or the other we  have made these mistakes, so we won’t be laughing at you; instead we aim to help. Mistakes in beauty can be quite embarrassing, especially when you’re trying to do the best you can.

So today, I am going to help you tackle these seemingly inevitable mistakes because as the song goes – “Don’t let nobody take your pride, don’t let nobody hold you down, oh no, you gotta keep on moving”.

1. The Geisha Blush: Have you ever taken up too much blush, and before you know it, ‘plop‘ – it’s on your cheeks; or applied blush and realized it’s way too much in the sunlight. Well, you’re not the only one.

All you need to do to fix it is, take your foundation brush or sponge, without applying more product on it, and use it right on the already applied blush, mimicking the blush application method. This will correct your mistake and ensure you’re good to go.

2. Foundation Fever: After applying my makeup, I want to look perfect. We all do right? Sometimes though, we take it a bit too far especially when applying foundation and concealer. Then when you step outside and check your mirror one last time, you think huh! Is that me? Yes it is gurrl. You laid on too much foundation, too quick.

I have 2 unorthodox remedies for this. They both work, so don’t get scared;

  • Rub your palms together vigorously until they are warm. Gently, but firmly place them on your face, one spot at a time, leaving them for a few seconds in each area. If you need to, get them warm again by rubbing together.
  • Get yourself worked up! When the skin is warmed up, it absorbs products faster and better. I usually sit in a car without the air conditioning or purposely do a short physical activity like jogging on the spot.

These tips will help your foundation look more seamless.

3. Mascara Streak: Imagine this – you’re applying mascara after a perfect cut crease eye shadow creation, your hand shakes a bit and the mascara wand leaves your lashes creating dark black streaks on your eyelid.

Remain calm. Mascara dries in less than a minute. Wait it out, and then use either the edge of a tweezer or a lash comb to scrape off the dry mascara crust. Yes, it is that easy. In the future, just use a business card when applying your mascara so this doesn’t happen again.

4. Lipstick Teeth: I love red lipstick just like a lot of women out there. When applying that perfect red lipstick (or any other for that matter), we want it to be just that – perfect. So we apply it evenly across both upper and lower lips, smack & reapply, until we are sure we have everywhere covered.

Only one thing left to do, smile in front of the mirror. You see it right? Coloured teeth. Apparently, the lipstick is covering way too much.

This one is super easy – place your index finger into your mouth with your lips forming an O. Let the finger touch your teeth and drag it out of your mouth. You will see the product responsible for the coloured teeth on your finger.

5. Surprise, Surprise: When they say get your brows shaped by a professional, there is a reason – they won’t take a chunk of it out when tweezing or threading. You probably will. I bet you have dozens of times too, and ended up with a weird shape – a bald spot in the middle of your brows or brows that make you look permanently surprised.

Instead of using a pencil, use a matte brown eyeshadow and an angled brush first to fill out that area. Finish up your  brows like you normally would with a pencil or brow powder and remember to set your brows with gel to avoid the product moving.

6. Lipstick Spills: I have always wondered why some ladies have lipstick on their chin. I don’t get it yet but it happens and we need to help stop it.

The remedy for this – lip liner. It’s super-easy and saves you from a lot of embarrassment.
