BNM Red Alert: Samia

Yes, it’s a Red Alert once again.

Forgive the quirky album art, this IS good music. A little warning though, this is far different from the better part of music of Nigerian origin that you are used to.

Timi Sarah Inokoba better known on stage as Samia, is a singer-songwriter of Hausa and Ijaw backgrounds. Growing up in between Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt, she was inspired by many artistes from the 30’s right down to the 20th century.

On first listen, you’re liable to doubt where she’s from. Her style is cool and very calm; very reminiscent of Corinne Bailey Rae and India Arie in the very early days.

Her first track, Feel It talks about the possession of the human soul by love, life, music and various other indulgences. The rhythmic beats in Rise produced by Dirin Raye serve to bring out the soulful message within the song.

Samia, is what we’d like to call: ‘a breath of fresh sound’.
