“The Intricate Singular Fluid Vocabulary”- Jewellery By Maya Antoun

Maya Antoun is a jeweller and a designer with a unique multi ethnic background. Born and raised in the Sudan, her work is influenced and informed by her culturally diverse upbringing as well as her experience gained from living in Africa and working with traditional African Jewellers.

Maya Antoun explores the reality of globalisation and the hybrid cultural ethnicity, offering jewellery pieces that indicate how individuals of ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds might re-interpret traditional jewellery in new ways.

She is especially interested in working with techniques such as filigree which is slowly disappearing. Filigree is a type of  delicate jewel work that involves the use of use gold, silver, or  other fine twisted wire. It is a complicated and  time consuming technique which takes years to master.

She uses the filigree technique as a focal point within her work.  By trying to find new and fresh uses for the techniques she creates a strong cultural aesthetic as well as creating a contemporary object. The joining and juxtaposing of different cultural elements meshes eastern and western attitudes with contemporary idioms and traditional forms into a singular fluid vocabulary.

Antoun collaborates with traditional filigree artisans in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through her projects with these groups of artisans she aims to encourage collaborations between craft and design within the sphere of traditional African jewellery. The goal is to develop viable new markets for this contemporary traditional jewellery within Africa as well as in the west.

There’s something about her jewellery that gives me goose bumps. It is simple, yet intricately designed.  Her jewellery presents itself as a new art form to me. The way she works with gold, silver, is unlike anything  I have seen. In its  texture, structure and elaborate design I find beauty that resonates with cosmopolitan, multi-cultural me. Her Jewellery is a collection of very captivating pieces of artwork to be admired and gracefully adorn the human body.
