It has been 2 years since a young designer named Bridget Awosika invited fashion insiders to experience a preview of her Spring/Summer 2009 collection. At that time, many were unacquainted with the brand…a lot has changed since then.

In 2010, the Bridget Awosika fashion brand reemerged on our red carpets and on magazine covers. The young fashion set were clearly besotted with the label and stylistas including Eku Edewor, Zara Okpara, Agbani Darego, Tiwa Savage and the designer herself set the red carpet alight in pieces from the brand.

2011 is here, Bridget Awosika has just won The Future Award for Designer of the Year, now the label has presented its first complete collection in Nigeria. The Parsons School of Design graduate tells us that “this collection introduces the Bridget Awosika label and its design aesthetics as the new modern luxe label exemplifying understated chic glamour with a bit more creative, edgy, modern minimalist’s approach with a youthful take on upscale and a few African inspired traditional dressings.

The collection has been presented in a unique way, in addition to the traditional photo lookbook, the designer has also released a video presentation of the collection. This ingenuity extends beyond the presentation to the clothes. With their Spring/Summer 2011 collection, the Bridget Awosika label delivers a collection that is truly international, however infused with touches of ‘home’. In the vein of Hussein Chalayan and Viktor & Rolf, Bridget Awosika makes sensational use of “modern shapes, asymmetry, clean lines, cuts, draping and intricate details”. At first glance, the collection seems to be targeted at the fashion forward lady, however a closer look reveals pieces that can be adapted for every woman who wants to experience her style star moment.

Collection statement by Bridget Awosika

…As this is the first official launch of the brand, the idea behind this collection was to present the variations of what the line has to offer without restricting it to a particular theme just yet but continuously drawing from that which is a staple inspiration for the line… Modern shapes, asymmetry, clean lines, cuts, draping and the intricate detailing as seen with the with recurring theme of accordion pleats, ruching on the side panels of the aso-oke linear mini dresses and a few other short dresses, as well as the hemlines and the delicate cuts. It further explores textures, shades of neon colors, the African tye dye process and a new approach to the “ipele” aso-oke as popularly worn by the Yorubas for special occasions as a shoulder shawl or one-shoulder sash is introduced as it is modified into a half jacket with a youthful edge, paired with the white tank and the neon pink pleated skirt as the new 3-piece look. The evening dresses tend to have an understated alluring appeal whether in a sensual, soft and organic flow as seen in the dresses with the draping or others with a strict linear structure particularly the final dress revealing a more architectural structure but still with a bit of a “relaxed” feel to it.
