Dance is the most vibrant part of African culture. Dance goes hand in hand with music and, the fact that most of our pop culture music fixations are dance-able and club-able party tracks just proves that dancing is truly in our blood.

Ever since the “death” of Yahooze a few years ago, Alanta became our dancing fixation in its many mild and wild forms and adaptations. And, before and even during its reign, many a dance have come and gone with the wind. But, slowly but surely, it seems we’re at the end of an era and a new dance craze already rears its ugly head.

Etighi is a dance style that has been subtly on the rise in popularity since the 2010 Calabar festival. And, in this era when Azonto, the Ghanaian dance fad has swept over Africa like a wildfire, trust Nigerians to show their identity. The moment I knew Etighi was truly here and might be here to stay was when I saw the teaser to Iyanya‘s club-banging single “Kukere”.

So what do you think? Does Etighi stand a chance? Do you think it’ll last or is this just a phase? Will Azonto overshadow any possibilities that Etighi has? Is Alanta dead? Well, that’s for you to decide. Here is a video showcasing the dance step slowly creeping into the land.

Also, Oba Omega, an artist from Rivers state, has dedicated his new single to the dance craze and a competition with a chance to win a thousand dollars. For more information on the competition, {click here}. Here’s the video to Oba Omega feat. Tony Harmony – Etighi Dance.
