Living Abroad: What Do You Think About Nigeria?

Published

 on

Have you been living outside your country for a while? What was your first reaction when you got to your current location? Was it a feeling of nostalgia? Did you feel like running back to the plane and returning back home? Or did you feel like, “Wow! I’m finally here. I’m never going to think about where I’m coming from.”

Whether you travelled to get an education, for work, marriage, health reasons, holiday, or to simply live in a different environment, most people would agree that “there is no place like home.”

Except if you were born in a foreign country and have lived most of your life there, it’s hard not to miss where you’re coming from, regardless of how the situation is at your country of origin.

On September 25th 2011, eight young Nigerians living in America met up in New York City to talk about their country. They spoke about what they miss most about their country, what they don’t miss, what they would like to change, what they would do if they had the audience of the Nigerian leaders and more.

Watching this video raised up certain thoughts about the perception of Nigeria by Nigerians living abroad. I currently don’t fall into this circle but I would really like to know, what do you think about Nigeria?

As you watch the video, please answer the same questions too. What do you miss most about Nigeria (or if Nigeria is not your home country, then what do you miss about yours?) What don’t you miss about Nigeria? Are you ever ashamed to be a Nigerian? If you had the audience of the Nigerian leaders, what would you tell them?

If you are in Nigeria and have had an experience of living abroad, what were your thoughts about your country while you were away? Or if you haven’t travelled abroad, what do you think about your country?

Please share.
