Professor Tokunbo Sofoluwe, Vice Chancellor of UNILAG dies after Cardiac Arrest

Sad news reaching us is that the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Babatunde Adetokunbo Sofoluwe has passed on.

He died after a heart attack which occurred during a University meeting. According to reports, Professor Sofoluwe slumped during a meeting yesterday, at the Senate Chambers of the institution and was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, (LUTH). He was confirmed dead after efforts to revive him failed.

The 62-year-old VC, who was credited with embarking on a remarkable transformation of the institution, died around 1a.m this morning. He had addressed a press conference on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, to mark the commencement of UNILAG’s Golden Anniversary and showed no sign of ill health.

Sofoluwe got his first degree from the University of Lagos in Computer Science. Prior to his death, Prof. Sofoluwe had also served twice as the Head of the Computer Science Department and also as the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the University.

Sofoluwe was born on April 15, 1950. He earned his Master’s Degree in 1975 and Doctorate in 1981 from Edinburgh University, Scotland. Prof Sofoluwe was the third alumnus to be appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos when he was appointed to the position in January 2010.
