Hello everyone and welcome to your weekly round up of news stories that made headlines across the country. At Bellanaija, we are so grateful that you all have decided to join us here today.

It’s the third day of another new month and we are delighted to once again, go over the hottest news stories for the week.

Here’s a recap of some of the stories that made headlines this week:

A 3 storey building located at No. 3 Anikantamo street, Lagos Island East Local  Council Development Area (LCDA) collapsed on Wednesday, resulting into injuries sustained by occupants. The eight-year-old building is located in Anikantamo area of Victoria Island near Adeniji Adele and collapsed around 1p.m, without giving any sign. Rescue workers raced to the scene and began checking the rubble for any signs of life. The spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Yushau Shuaibu, confirmed the incident to newsmen.  According to one of the occupants of building, identified as Mr. Ibrahim, he said that the building caved in at 1:00 pm when the developer and his  construction team were trying to patch (reconstruct) one of the dilapidated  pillars of the building.

A major tragedy was averted at Dunamis International Gospel Church of the  Federal Capital Territory, FCT on Wednesday when a piece of an explosive suspected to be a bomb  tucked  under a seat in the children’s session of the church was discovered and was quickly defused. The explosive concealed in an Auminium container was discovered under a seat in the children section of the church at about 9.30pm. The church service had barely finished when the item was discovered. There was tension in the church when the discovery was announced. The Head of the church Technical Unit, Godstime Asuquo, who spoke with journalists on Thursday morning, said the personnel of the FCT Anti -Bomb squad were immediately contacted to detonate the explosive.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on Thursday, disclosed that it has arrested a suspected drug trafficker, Obivuko Ifeanyi, with 210 grammes of substances that tested positive for cocaine. Obivuko, who was apprehended at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, had allegedly inserted the drugs into his anus. He was said to have been detected with the aid of the body scanner during the inward clearance of passengers from a Turkish airline from Brazil. The Agency’s Airport Commander, Hamza Umar, described the incident as unusual, calling insertion by men “a rare and dangerous mode of drug concealment.” Hamza also said that Obivuko had taken a big risk by showing up at the airport with the drugs.

52 prostitutes were arrested on Thursday night, as officials of the Lagos State Task force on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit stormed Isaac John and Toyin Street in Ikeja, Lagos. According to PM News, the task force acted on a report published in The NEWS magazine of this week about prostitutes taking over the area and that Thursday was going to be the ladies’ night. The task force officials first of all carried out a survey of the area around 10 pm and went back to the office to strategise only to strike around 12 am and arrested the suspected prostitutes whose ages range between 18 and 34 years. They were taken to the task force office in a Black Maria. The raid was massive as several armed policemen carried out the onslaught.

A 40-year-old man, Victor Nnanna Onyemaechi from Amibo village in Umuahia South Council of Abia State was arrested by the state’s police command for allegedly having sex with a neighbour’s goat. It was learnt that the man was tied to the goat and paraded round the village before he was handed over to the police by the traditional ruler of Amibo community. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Udevioti Ezekiel, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspects has been charged to court under Section 214 Subsection 2 of the Criminal Code.

A 25-year-old man identified as Femi Owolabi was on Thursday paraded by the Oyo state Police Command for allegedly raping  a four-year-old girl. The suspect who is being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan, allegedly committed the crime on  July 30. According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Clement  Adoda, the  mother of the victim, upon her discovery that the innocent girl had  been defiled, reported at Agugu Police Division. She was quoted by the police as saying that  her little daughter came out of  the suspect’s room with blood stain all over her legs. “She reported further that on a closer observation, she discovered that the  girl was bleeding profusely from her private part. On receipt of the report,  detectives went after the suspect and got him apprehended.”

The Emir of Fika in Yobe State, Mohammed Idris, on Friday, escaped an attack by a suicide bomber at the Potiskum Central Mosque. Toyin Gbadegesin, the state’s police spokesperson, said the bomber tried to get close to the emir after the Friday prayers, but was prevented by a police officer. He said that as the bomber was making frantic moves to push himself through the crowd to reach the emir, a police officer suspected his movement and pushed him down. In the process, one of the concealed explosives detonated and killed the bomber, while five police officers and two civilians sustained injuries. The emir was unhurt.
