Why Wait Till Next Year? Check Out How to Rock 5 Top Trends from New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014
We love fashion and New York fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2014 definitely showcased top fashion designers from all over, at their best. Grunge, utilitarian, pop-chic, lace, leather etc were all very present at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and we are here to showcase the top five trends of the fabulous 2014 Spring/Summer Fashion Week.
All types of designers from the conservative to the outrageous were at NYFW S/S14 and Africa was not left out. Check out how Nigerian designer Maki Oh, who was very much on trend, showing gorgeous fabrics and innovative silhouettes and William Okpo who delivered nothing less than originality and modern fashion among other brilliant designers showcased next Spring’s hottest trends.
Also, because we love our fashion lovers we will give you a few tips on how to be ahead of the game and incorporate the hottest Spring/Summer looks for 2014 now.
Crop Over
We saw this trend re-emerge early last year and it has proven that it is going nowhere. I guess it will only grow with each season. With abs and hints of flesh peeking through, the crop top continues to flourish.
Pattern City
New York Fashion Week painted the town with patterns and lots of color. This past Spring/Summer fashion proved that anyone could go bold and mix print. The success of the trend has helped it make its way back onto the catwalk. Designers like Jason WU, J Crew, Michael Kors, Clover Canyon all showcased patterns on patterns, translating it in their own way and making it a NYFW staple. I predict this will soon become a classic look for all modern women.
Sheer Seduction
In lace, netting or chiffon, in one form or the other, sheer fabrics had their day on the catwalk. Michael Kors and Marchesa were romantic, while Reed Krakoff made it a little sporty. This trend was shown in classic and modern silhouettes and is definitely a trend to try this season.
Northern Hem
The hems were way north during fashion week showcasing short dresses, skirts and shorts. Legs for days and days and days It looked like everyone got the short memo. Fitted, flirty or pleated, short hems were definitely on the loose.
White Out
White, white and more white! Crisp and clean, white was definitely the color to feature. A flurry of white came down the runway in a variety of fabrication. The sea of white on the runway looked absolutely amazing, making it a must have in your closet for spring.
Incorporate the Trends
If you are fashion anxious like me that means you are super eager to incorporate these awesome looks into your fall wardrobe. Here are some quick tips on how you can make these hot, hot Spring/Summer trends work for you now.
White Out and Sheer Seduction
Gone were the days of “no white after Labor Day”. Now white is a norm. Whiter winter, off-white whatever shade of white suits your fancy, it’s stylish and totally Awed by Monica approved for Fall. You can either make your whole look all white or you can incorporate it in pieces. I really don’t think it matters. The most important thing is that white is the more dominant and focal point of the outfit.
The Northern Hem
The cooler air the Northern hemisphere brings along is no excuse to resort solely to pants or long skirts. Be sure to wear your short skirts, dresses and even shorts. And if the cold brushing against your bare legs is too much to handle then throw on some hosiery, knee-high socks or wear knee length or thigh-high boots. These little added details will spice up your look and keep you very much in trend.
Pattern City
Patterns are fun and a great way to express personal style. This major Spring/Summer trend can be showcased throughout fall essentials like outer wear. We all need a great fall coat or jacket and what better silhouette than a trench coat. Trench coats are stylish, timeless and shine through the winter/fall blues. A pattern trench in my opinion is the perfect way to represent this pattern city.
Crop Cover
I am a major fan of this trend and to see it go away solely because of the weather would be a shame. Luckily awesome designers like Alexander Wang, have made this trend Fall-friendly by making crop sweaters. You can achieve this trend without feeling under dressed by wearing high-waist bottoms in all silhouettes. So when you go out and get your crop sweater make sure you pick up a pair of high-waist shorts and cool stockings to go with it!
So fashionable people, how would you rock the New York Fashion Week trends? Don’t forget to share which designer was your favourite. Have a beautiful week.

Majority of these dresses are just crazy and should not be worn in daytime. But, I admire the creativity.#strictlymyopinion#

Naija fashionistas, if you don’t have a wash board stomach, don’t attempt the cropped look. Just pleading. Pity us …
