“Why did you leave Nigeria?”, almost every Nigerian who has left the country has been asked that question.  There are different reasons of course – job opportunities, love and more! But for video blogger Kola Olaosebikan, she returns the question with another one – “Why Wouldn’t I Leave Nigeria?!”

This video “The Only Circumstance Under Which I Will (Happily) Move Home To Nigeria” has been floating around the web for a few months now – a BN commenter left the link on our last Move Back to Nigeria post yesterday – a series that features Nigerians in the diaspora considering or that have taken the leap to move back, so we figured we’ll post it to get your opinion.

After a brief intro, Kola asks us a series of rhetorical questions:

“Why wouldn’t I leave a country …

… that thinks it’s OK to marry 7 year old girls to 75 year old men and make it a legal law?”
… that would pay $500,000 for Kim Kardashian to show up in our country and cannot afford to pay for education for young girls?”
… that forces University graduates to work for one year for money that can’t even pay for their phone bills in the name of National Service. Shouldn’t National Service be voluntary?”
… where people spend 8 years getting a university degree that should only take 3 years?”
… where University professors sleep with girls every single day of the school year so they can good grades and the government turns a blind eye and there’s no justice for these girls?”
… that the US sends millions of dollars to on a daily basis yet Nigeria is one of the poorest countries in the world?”
… that has so many people getting married and having kids but there is little to no sex education because we’re holy and sex is an unholy word to say?”

Kola ends the video by saying Nigeria has a broken justice system that she has no interest in fixing, and her own passion lies not in fixing Nigeria, but in helping orphans, which she says she can’t do in Nigeria.

“The one thing I care most about in this world … is helping orphans … and I cannot do that in Nigeria and that’s one of the biggest reasons I left that country.”

At the end, Kola says if this video was made about the US by an American, Americans will have an opinion and do something, but she thinks Nigerians will watch it, sigh and say, “Na wa o, God will help that country sha”. Will we prove her wrong?

Watch the 7 minute video below. It goes by really fast.

As she said, she has strong opinions indeed. Definitely worth discussing.

Do you agree or disagree?
