Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi Ordered to be Arrested for Fraud – Report

The newly crowned Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, is to be arrested by the Nigerian Police on fraud-related charges from his tenure as Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor.

Sahara Reporters states that sources at the Presidency in Abuja disclose that a team of policemen at the Emir’s palace in Kano received the order from the Nigerian police headquarters to place Sanusi under arrest if he leaves the Kano Governor’s lodge.

Sanusi was meant to have been arrested at his private home on Sunday night after his appointment was announced, according to sources of the news agency.

The ousted Apex Bank governor, has been staying at the Kano State governor’s lodge, receiving visitors and undertaking traditional rites.

It is also being alleged that a few northern leaders have warned President Jonathan to avoid “a reckless action so as to avoid setting fire to the already volatile situation in the city of Kano”.

The rift between the President and Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is believed to have begun, when he revealed that the President allegedly stole $20 billion from crude oil sales.

They’ve started O! They’ve started O! Northern leaders are already warning the presidency about volatile Kano. Before we know it people will start rioting and talking about the blood of civilians flowing. It is always the masses that suffer when these kinds of things happen.

GEJ shouldn’t be stupid, he is starting something he can’t finish. He should stop harassing this man and face his work. There are the likes of Diezani who he is supposed to arrest yet he rewards those thieves but is bent on victimizing Sanusi because he spoke out about the corruption. Arrest of the Emir will create a very volatile situation. Nigeria is currently facing enough abeg

    Lets get this straight.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, although a distinguished and outstanding service as CBN governor, was indicted for FRAUDULENT activities.

A sane person will clear his name of all charges in court, before clutching at another ceremonious title, thats what people with integrity do, thats what professionals around the world do.

But Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, jumped the gun, he put the chart before the horse, attempting to evade the long arm of the law by snatching up the title as EMIR.

Shame on you Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, you are not above the law.

“A sane person will clear his name of all charges in court, before clutching at another ceremonious title, that’s what people with integrity do, that’s what professionals around the world do”. Thou speaketh every word of the truth, my friend, having clearly stated what I was trying to in my comment below. However and as ever, this is Nigeria, land of the incongruous … And as they continue their power tussle, the masses on the street continue to pay with their blood.

Sanusi being as intelligent as he is KNOWS exactly what the connotations of that tussle will be if Kano or fellow northern leaders decide to standoff against GEJ’s assertion of authority. And as much as I detest GEJ’s administration, this does not bode well for national peace. I expected more from SLS, even just on the fundamental basis of showing some moral responsibility for the fate of the country that he claimed to have been seeking the interest of, when he exposed the missing billions. Naija… we’re all in it for personal gain, not so? Indeed.

He’s always asserted that he spoke out as an officer of the government, & that his responsibility at the time WAS to the people (cos of the government)…if i misunderstood his assertions please someone educate me. I’m guessing now he’s been chucked out he no longer feels that ‘responsibility’ hence the power games…?! Iono tho. :-/

Even if he has been indicted, he should have his day in court. What business does GEJ have with ordering arrests? Is he the court? Why is it so easy for these people to become dictators? If SLS committed a crime, let the courts decide. There’s a reason the executive and judicial arms are separate and independent! You can’t be accuser, prosecution and judge. I’m not a fan of Sanusi, but GEJ is beginning to fight really dirty… Like Obj

I hear you Sir Harvey Dent but enough is enough with GEJ’s government and selective “justice”! The President’s darling- the petroleum minister has been indicted by countless investigations for misuse of office and mis-management bordering on fraud yet nothing has been done to her instead our “dear” president nominated her for OPEC top job! This same president who appointed someone who was indicted as being complicit in Bola Ige’s murder as Police Affairs Minister. Oh the irony! Please there are too many people in his government with less than stellar reputations, who at one time or the other have been indicted for corruption to use this argument that SLS should face the law. How about Fayose, a man who still has corruption charges pending against him, who GEJ held his hand up as PDP’s candidate for Ekiti Governor? Or is it Kashamu who is a “reportedly” a fugitive from America and is PDP’s kingpin in the SW? Abi is it the one and only “madam” Alams former Bayelsa Governor whom he pardoned under controversial circumstances? Those are the few I can recall off the top of my head. Please what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. GEJ should deal with the backlog of all those in his govt with pending indictments for corruption and fraud first!

I am even fuming at his gall, vindictiveness and desperation going ahead with this SLS witch-hunt. He doesn’t care what the outcome is as long as he gets his own back on SLS for humiliating his government with the truth! As a true President and patriot, he ought to consider that the unity and peace of this country are sacrosant and bigger than his ambitions to rule beyond 2015!

This was bound to happen. He’s not been proven guilty of anything but there’s still an open investigation which hasn’t been closed out, I was really surprised that he was crowned before the case against him was resolved. And I realise he’s being witch hunted but Sanusi and whoever made the decision to announce him as Emir seem to know exactly what reaction they were stirring up with the steps they took. And he was doing so well until now.

Honestly, this whole thing is just a serious mess and I wish these grown men can just stop using this country’s future to stage their mud fights. Just take your drama into a boxing ring somewhere and duke it out if you’re feeling like proper alpha dogs.

      June 12, 2014 at 3:14 am

Your comment reminds me of the human response to tension – to equalize blame. See how people are asking SLS not to become Emir (his only shot at this dream, given his age) because it would antagonize GEJ. Not to compare you to rape and domestic abuse apologists but this drive to avoid conflict prioritizes order/inactivity (notice I didn’t say peace) over justice.

    • ABZ...

      June 12, 2014 at 8:35 am

GBAM!! you have said it all!
Give me a break, SLS is now selfish because he claims his birthright to be Emir?? E gba mi.. I believe he didn’t confer the title on himself- there would have been several people in line for the title, each one qualifying for whatever laid down and accepted reason. So, because he had a tussle with Jona, he should say ” no, let me not be king”. Easier to point fingers when even professionally, you wouldn’t pull your self out of contention for a promotion you deserve because it might piss some executive off.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty? What about the allegations he made- have they been proved to be completely unfounded? So now that Alsion Dieziani is being receommended for OPEC Sec-Gen, what happens if she is found guilty of corruption afterwards? She is too risky politically considering Jona is not winnign the next election and Alison is bound to be investigated.

      SLS carry go jo!

    • Mz Socially Awkward...

      June 12, 2014 at 4:12 pm

Kay, I’m confused. Are you trying to say Sanusi’s postion in all of this is necessarily the same as the victims of child abuse or rape? I would seriously hesitate to make that comparison.

Let me ask you this instead – if you’ve ever had to apply for a job in a country other than our own lawless Nigeria, do you think there’s any possibility of even being considered by a reputable employer if you still had a case of alleged fraud open against your name which hadn’t yet been resolved? Would you, as a business owner, take on an employee who still had a case of fraud open against them, which hadn’t been resolved? Could you ordinarily run for any kind of public office with that kind of allegation over your head?

We’ve become too unecessarily sentimental about grave issues in this country. Ordinarily, nobody should look at this whole situation and care whether this was Sanusi’s only shot at achieving his dream of becoming Emir. Just as nobody should have cared 3 years ago when GEJ was telling us about his no-shoes-to-school tales of woe, instead of focusing on giving us hard facts about how he plans to tackle Nigeria’s problems as president. Sanusi was accused of fraud as our ex-CBN governor and without seeing the back of that case, he’s gone on to a new position of authority. Is it that we’re now too polarised into many different factions of supporters’ clubs as a country to truly see anything wrong with that picture? If this is the case, let me bring fresh tidings of doom. Nigeria will never, EVER turn around from the path of destruction we’re building on until we learn to strip sentiments away from our understanding of right and wrong.

    • Mz Socially Awkward...

      June 12, 2014 at 4:24 pm

@ ABZ – “Easier to point fingers when even professionally, you wouldn’t pull your self out of contention for a promotion you deserve because it might piss some executive off.”

Again, I don’t understand your point. I’m coming from the angle of wondering how Sanusi walked into this knowing his backside was still open due to not yet having those allegations properly dismisssed. And you are… actually, I don’t know what you’re saying. Let’s use your analogy for a minute and say that, professionally, I’m alleged to have pilfered money from the company’s account and then while that investigation is going on I’m suspended from work and then find out there’s a vacancy available in another affiliated company for, oh lets say the position of MD. Then the Chief Operating Officer of the 1st company who does business with the 2nd company, decides to clamp down hard on my ambition with the reason and proof of having unanswered charges against my name. How exactly do you think the scales are going to be weighted in that power struggle?

That’s the picture I’ve painted and you’re talking about something completely different. If it’s just an ordinary case of looking for opportunity where it knocks, without the messiness of fraud allegations attached, why should Sanusi or myself or anybody else for that matter care who in the heck gets pissed off because we’re chasing our dream?

    • Kay

      June 12, 2014 at 6:16 pm

@MzSociallyawkward, I’ll answer your question. Sanusi’s fraud allegations are motivated by personal bias and that is why they don’t carry any legitimacy (especially in the North) when he is been judged for positions of authority. Also, one is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
I stand by my previous claim. Blame for this unrest lies squarely with Jonathan. He called for Sanusi to be arrested, so he is responsible for the consequences. When did Presidents start ordering arrests? Why didn’t he arrest Sanusi last month? This is the same man that pardoned Alamieyeseigha!
Yes, Sanusi did something Jonathan would not like him to do (to return to my domestic abuse analogy) or something Jonathan saw as an invitation to attack (rape analogy). He is not responsible for Jonathan’s action; this use of extra legal powers (ordering his arrest). That action is Jonathan’s, and he takes the blame for what he does.

In Nigeria integrity is a foreign language. I’m of the opinion that if Sanusi is rightly the heir to the throne then he should ascend it, but there are several character questions that are still pending from his days as a CBN governor.
For such an important position as the emir of the kano Emirate, the King makers & governor of kano in my opinion ought to have held off crowning SLS until all charges against him are cleared because making him a religious leader with these charges hanging over him dilutes the integrity of the emir stool.
I am of the opinion that SLS was very much part of the corruption cesspool in the FGN, if he really was concerned & wanted to be a whistle-blower on the corruption he had ample time to do it. I think SLS knew he was about to get canned & was looking for a way to save face plus win public sympathy in preparation for his ascension to the emir position.
SLS is no Saint in my opinion & yes NNPC is rotten so is CBN & every other branch of the FGN, it’s a case of kettle calling pot black.

      Under what investigation???
The full raft of charges levelled against him were included in the FRC report issued in June 2013! What further secret investigation is still going on 12 months after?

He has publicly answered every charge levelled against him in the report. If the FG wanted him to clear his name in court they should have arrested him then. Since they didn’t what is he supposed to do. Now the opportunity to become Emir came his way and he’s just supposed to ignore it while waiting for some phoney investigation.

It’s as if the presidency just waits for SLS to do something significant, like when he highlighted the missing $2obn or became Emir, before they start harrassing him.

I can assure you that if SLS just decides to keep quiet and retire to some village, they will no longer see him as a threat and will leave him alone.

    Hi Ria,

Find attached a link to an Audited report, from the FEDERAL REPORTING COUNCIL of NIGERIA, on Sanusi Lamido Sanusis Tenure as CBN Governor .

Its a professional audit, detailed with gross financial misconducts.

I am not implying he is guilty of all charges in the report, but a SMART person will first secure victory in court (Hence ARM himself) against all charges levied against his tenure as CBN governor, before taking up another public position.

At this rate, he has smeared the tittle as EMIR, he is the first EMIR charged with FRAUD!

    • Yt

      June 12, 2014 at 7:04 am

I don’t believe this report from the FRC. This same report was tendered in court and the judge ruled in SLS favor that the govt was witch hunting him. Whether he was fraudulent or not, money is missing and if he hadn’t spoken up and dared the presidency, subsequent CBN govs wld be puppets of the executive.
He’s not evading any law, emirs don’t have immunity.
GEJ and his cohorts feel he is anti-PDP, and they wld do all in their power to prevent a peaceful reign. Their attempts to stall his coronation already failed.

    • Kola S

      June 12, 2014 at 9:08 am

SLS has responded to every single charge in that audited report. See link below.

SLS was suspended in Feb 2014 based on a report that came out in Jun 2013! I guess it was a big coincidence that the suspension came after he raised allegations of the missing $20bn.

Since the suspension there’s been no arrest or criminal charge against him, so what is he supposed to do, just put his life on hold until his accusers decide to act?

Now he has been made Emir, his accusers have woken up again (in the same way they woke up after he spoke about the missing money), and are talking of arresting him. Do the clouds have to form the words “witch hunt” above SLS’s head before people realise exactly what’s going on here?

The Federal Reporting Council according to Sanusi is a biased umpire and will never give him a fair trial for which he took the FGN to court and got a judgement against them. He has been accused of “financial recklessness” for which no charges has been brought against him. In Nigeria where corruption in high places is so rife that you don’t need to look hard to get evidence against any of them, GEJ and his hacket men are still looking for what Sanusi did so many months after his suspension. Dieziani on the hand was nominated by GEJ for a higher post at OPEC when she hasn’t answered for the private jetgate. Pls how long do you suggest Sanusi wait for GEJ to make up his mind what to accuse him of before he moves on to higher things in his life. Pls stop massaging hypocrisy in this country.

At Mr Dent and mz socially awkward, if Sanusi has been charged to court, why does gej need to order his arrest? Is it not for the court to issue arrest warrants and order him to be remanded in custody? How does a president usurp the duties of the court? Why has he not ordered for lawan who was caught taking bribe to be arrested? I am no fan of SLS, but for us to endorse this gross abuse of powers shows indeed worrisome. Leave him to the courts. The north is boiling right now, why add to it by ordering the arrest of a sitting emir?

ann said it all. i don’t care if sls stole anything, he should CLEAR his name first before becoming the emir. he is not above the law, so because a riot might break out, leaders can commit crimes and go and hide in their villages. he cant even try this in OBJ’S regime. the federal govt has every right to order for his arrest.

If emir surrogate, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, did not return to the palace within the next 24 hours the people of Kano should rise up against him and demand for his dethronement. A coward who is a refugee in kano gov. house, is not fit to be an emir.

Lets get the facts cleared out.

Sanusi lamido case is at the Supreme court, The supreme court has a binding precedent over all courts in Nigeria.

Find a link to the legal proceedings on Sanusi’s case

The Supreme court was scheduled to rule on May 20th, but are yet to rule.

Lets all try to stick with the facts here, its the only way we can make sense of this issue.

      Thank you for the link.
The supreme court case was brought by Sanusi and challenges the President’s authority to unilaterally suspend Sanusi.

They are yet to rule on the matter.

There are also two cases relating to the FG breaching his fundamental rights, and the FRC’s authority to carry out a probe.

Where then does the issue of an arrest come into this? What has changed?

GEJ leave a Great Emir alone “Sanusi Lamido Sanusi’ and face your job as President. You can win this war you are about to start. Why don’t you arrest him before now?
What is your problem, Mr Gej are you from Kano, why are you Invading in there Issue that you don’t know the historical background . who put the Police at Emir Place if not the other from the federal govt. We are all watch , Please face your Business as Presido. we have a lot of issues to tackle more than Emir which you need to concentrate not Emir.

I pity all of who see president GEJ as your mates. Most of you can’t even cough when the king of your village is talking talk more of calling you fathers by name. Yet you guys wag your tongue so easily in calling YOUR president all sorts of names. Anyway, the truth is that whether any of you haters like it or not GEJ remains your president. All of you who this high level of disrespect for this man may not even live to attain this height of presidency he has attained. Pls be careful and watch what you say and give respect to whom respect is due because”A position or office you refuse to respect you will never attain”
