Abuja (NAN) – The United States’ Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, has promised that his country will support Nigeria to ensure successful general elections in 2015.

He made the promise when he paid a courtesy call on members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja on Wednesday.

Ertwistle said: “From our own historical experience, we understand the importance of election. The United States will support the Nigerian people in their quest to ensure a credible and transparent election that they want and deserve.

“That is what we stand for. I will try to be in touch with all the leaders of the political parties to be knowledgeable about the electoral process here.

“I think it is incumbent on all of us to work towards this; history shows us that one election can make the difference.

“It may not happen overnight, but genuine change in every society is only possible in a true democratic process.’’

The envoy advised Nigerian politicians against violence during elections, adding that violence was a threat to democracy across the world.

National Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, promised that the party would ensure that its aspirants were subjected to primaries.

He said the leadership of the party believed in internal democracy, adding that the party’s doctrine of one man one vote would be observed in all elections.

Mu’azu said the outcome of the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun was an attestation to the commitment of the PDP leadership to transparent elections.

He said PDP was synonymous with Nigeria because it had no religious or ethnic bias.

He stressed that the priority of the leadership of PDP was the unity and development of Nigeria.
