“My Husband Tried to Use ‘Magun’ Charm on Me”: Divorce-Seeking Wife Tells Court

Ikole (NAN) – A hairdresser, Omolara Ogunleye, has asked an Ikole Customary Court in Ekiti to dissolve her 16-year-old union  to her husband,  Idowu, who she accused of attempting to use “magun”  on her.

Magun is a charm that is placed on a wife suspected to be involved in extramarital affairs and believed to be capable of resulting in the  death of any one  engaged  in sexual intercourse with her.

In a suit filed on July 3rd in an Ikole Customary Court, Omolara also accused her husband  of  failing in his parental responsibility in the upkeep of their five children.

The petitioner, in her testimony before the court on Tuesday, said that Idowu attempted to use  the charm on the suspicion that she was involved in extramarital affairs.

“In an attempt to kill me, he put “magun’’ at the entrance of his room and called me to enter but I detected the charm and raised alarm.

“He confessed that he wanted to use the charm to confirm my denial of the adultery allegation and begged me not to tell my family members,’’ she said.

The petitioner further told the court that her husband was a drunk and often spent his savings on alcohol consumption.

She also alleged that when drunk, Idowu was in the habit of beating her.

Omolara, who said that the respondent did not pay her bride price nor legally married her, prayed the court to order him to pay N50,000 monthly for the upkeep of the five children.

In his defence, Idowu denied  attempting to use  magun on her,  describing  the allegation as baseless.

The estranged husband insisted that his wife was engaged in an extramarital affair with someone he knew.

Idowu admitted to being a drunk but blamed the development on  frustration, adding that he often consumed alcohol to forget his challenges.

He aligned with the request of Omolara for dissolution of the union but objected to the request of payment of N50, 000 monthly upkeep allowance.

Idowu  urged the court to grant him the custody of the five children  so that he could  take care of them.

The Court President, Yemisi Ojo, adjourned the case till September 29th  for judgment.
