Dame Khan Takes Over as New Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers

Aniedi Ikoiwak, former Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Rivers, on Monday urged politicians to shun inhuman behaviours to avoid election-related crisis.

Ikoiwak gave the advice at the hand over ceremony of the new Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, Gesila Khan, in Port Harcourt.

He said if political grievances were well channeled, some negative predictions about the general elections would be averted.

He said as part of the build up by INEC towards ensuring a credible and peaceful elections, it had established a synergy between stakeholders and security agencies.

“There is need for synergy between the security agencies and INEC because on the day of elections, these two organisations stand out and they determine the fate of the citizens.”

Ikoiwak also pledged INEC’s determination to achieve a peaceful and credible elections in the state.

In her speech, the new REC, Khan, deployed from Delta, assured residents of the state of a harmonious working relationship as the state shared similarities with her previous posting.

She said INEC had proper planning, manpower and logistics in place to surmount any election related challenges.

She also urged Rivers people who were yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards, to collect them from their local government councils.

Chinedu Evurulobi, Administrative Secretary of the commission, on behalf of the staff, thanked the outgoing and incoming RECs and also assured them of his cooperation.

He pledged the staff’s readiness to ensure a strong team that would actualize a peaceful and credible election in the state.
