Most people who know Amy Schumer know her more as a comic and less as an actress. She made her name on US TV first with a special, Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff in 2012, followed by a popular show on Comedy Central – Inside Amy Schumer, which launched in 2013 and is now into its third series.

Yet in this movie, a screenplay she wrote herself, Schumer has produced the most retrograde RomCom in years. Schumer plays Amy, more or less herself, a New York journalist who is supposedly having the time of her life smoking hard, drinking hard, having lots of casual sex, although she never stays the night or gives the men her phone number.

The story changes when Amy is given an assignment by the men’s magazine she works for, S’Nuff, to profile a leading sports surgeon, Aaron (played by Bill Hader). He seems a bit of a geek but he’s super-nice, clever and successful, with basketball mega-star LeBron James as his best friend. She fancies Aaron, they go out to dinner, spend the night together, initiated entirely by her. They admit to liking each other, begin to date, and have an amazing time together, until…Amy wrecks it.

But this is a RomCom. Will they get back together? Will they ever. How? The answer is more horrific than you could ever have guessed. Think cheer leading. Think Billy Joel’s ‘Uptown Girl’ and ‘I Think I Love You’.

Directed by Judd Apatow, Trainwreck is one movie to see filled with many scenes with great laughs, giving a real sense of a comedy troupe pushing each other on. From the stables of Universal Pictures, Trainwreck stars Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, Tilda Swinton, Colin Quinn and a host of others. It opens in the cinemas this Friday.
