Beauty documentary series, Pretty by Un’Ruly, launched a few months ago as a way from diverse women in the world to reach out to others on matters of beauty. It seeks to explore the many ways beauty is viewed by the world, countries and even cities.

From the aisles of Paris to the City of London, they meet with women who have experienced different aspects of beauty and have been treated differently based on their skin colour, makeup choice, clothes, hair or accent.

In a recent episode, they meet with Nigerian-Ghanaian Adora Mba in London. Born there, Adora talks to the Un’Ruly crew about growing up with questions about her braids, having to fix her gap tooth after being teased in school for it, why she feels the need to always be impeccably dressed, how she would be stared at by people in some parts of London who were not used to seeing people of colour, feeling a pressure to be slimmer, and how, now, she has come to terms and even loves how different she is.

Her message to others about beauty? “We shouldn’t be so hard on ourselves. We are so much prettier than we think we are. Every morning we should look in the mirror and go ‘you know what, I’m okay.’
