According to a Yahoo News report, authorities in Lagos have shut down dozens of churches across the city due to a deluge of complaints over noisy worship.

The city’s environmental protection department is said to have sealed off 22 premises on Wednesday after receiving dozens of complaints from residents.

Also, the report further states:

Neighbours of one church – Jesus Our Lord Divine Catholic Prayer Ministry – said they were constantly disturbed by a congregation of mainly pregnant women, young mothers and their children.

“On my phone alone, I get 20 SMS on a daily basis,” said Adebola Shabi, head of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, according to the national Daily New Telegraph.

In the next five years, if there is no stringent policy on the siting of religious houses, there will be problem.”

Constant noise — from the the thumping beats of loud music, the beep of car horns and the noise of generator engines — is the soundtrack to Lagos life and is seen by many as part of its charm.

But residents are complaining in unprecedented numbers that they can barely hear themselves think among the churches and mosques where giant loudspeakers pump out religious messages and music.

Officials receive around 50 telephone calls and 20 text messages a day complaining about noise, mostly from churches, the New Telegraph said.

“With the enforcement today, we would have sealed about 55 premises because the last enforcement we carried out, we shut 33 premises,” Shabi told reporters.

“I gave approval for closure of 22 premises today, making 55.”

(straightfaced)you can count the number of members not up to 20 but the speakers can make a new baby go deaf. And to worsen it all he is fake(i know when someone who calls himself/herself a man of God is fake)when he started the congregation was kinda much buh not up to 50 buh every week, the numbers decreases,(shey if he was real and prophesying the right thing the congregation will increase? but nothing) someone please help me with their contact number o….pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

LWKM…. Concluding that a pastor is fake because the congregation is small is beyond laughable…..Have u been to the church yourself? I have found that the churches that actually preach salvation, love and God are always empty…. the ones preaching Miracle, divine intervention, breakthrough and multiplication are always full…..JUST SAYING. P.S I am not defending ur neighbour, just speaking generally

FYI,he doesnt preach salvation,he is always preaching wealth, casting and binding the devil, enemies should die, and that,he has never preached salvation. So tell me if he was really casting and binding the devil in his members will they run away who want to be going about the street with the devil in him/her? If his members where progressing will they run?NO,he is just so fake.
I wont ever believe him for nothing.

I’m a christian and in support. . .But if you shut down churches cos of noise, shut down the clubs/bars, mosques & noisy businesses that blast adverts from their shops as well, then we are fine

      August 29, 2015 at 11:28 am

To be fair, most clubs and bars are not in residential areas, also, most noisy businesses are in ‘business’ areas. Churches have to conduct their affairs so, the issue should be with church buildings that are situated in highly populated areas.

To be honest there are way too many churches these days that some streets should be named “church street” #justsaying

This shouldn’t be a witch hunt…. shut down mosques too coz they make noise, shut down all those shops selling music CDs that they blast all day long, fine houses where they choose to play their music unnecessarily loud, all event halls must have permits to play loud music at certain times of the day, fine all those companies (banks, telecoms…e.t.c) that play loud music and get foolish people to shout over d music in d the name of MARKETING….., fine those idiots that drive with the palm pressing down on their horn for no reason and if your engine is making too much noise, the VIO officers shud impound ur car till you are ready to fix it.

BTW I am a Christian, we know it is only a matter of time before other places of worship follow. There is freedom of worship and there is disturbing the peace. Totally inconsiderate and unneccessary, the last time I was home, first no light as the weather got to just that right temp, you know the cool one right before dawn, that’s how one church started, I did not sleep at all that night and was headed to villa the following morning. So YESSSSS LAWD!!!!!

Please loud generators should be banned as well, and preferably let all gens be switched off by 12am latest in non industrial areas. the noise of generator causes insomnia
and very unhealthy too cos of fumes.
Abeg Lagos state govt should see to it and all churches and mosque should make sure no external speaker is used to generate noise. we all can go about our businesses with no one disturbing the other.

My gosh, that’s insanity and a terrible condition to be in. That’s why when I visit Nigeria which I don’t do often, I head to my village, away from the bustling, air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, mosquitoes etc.. I’m glad something is being done about that

    hello charles
it is good to know that you in support however your argument isn’t rounded, allow me explain to you why
1 clubs do not in any way create noise pollution, until you actually enter a club premises you have no idea what is going on

    2 the mosques have external speakers yes :they only use it for call for prayer and under 5 minutes they are done {please note am not a moslem i just happen yo be objective }

3 and thirdly this said churches are in predominantly residential areas without being told they ought to know that people deserve a right to peace and quiet in there own homes.
not only is it a social menace, it is out-rightly ungodly for you to blatantly impose or FORCE your services or whatever it is on people , force is synonymous with negation so it is wrong on all levels to impose and act without regard for others.

      August 28, 2015 at 8:57 pm

You are the only one that made sense here! Everyone else complaining about clubs and mosques, pls get a clue! Churches in residential areas go on and on for hrs disturbing the peace. So not cool!

    • fa hear!!

      August 28, 2015 at 9:50 pm

fa hear!!! the mosque in my area ehn…. hehe, u will be shocked. In fact @ GRA here in ilorin, around Kwara mall to be precise, mosques have been resurrected like kilode, i personally know 6 ALL within walking distance. esp one green and white one like that, i was in the sitting room of a friend, inside their own compound and you’d think the mosque is right in d middle of the house!! its that bad. Personally, I think churches, mosques and Vendors are equally guilty of the offence….

There’s one in my neighborhood.. And also a primary school close by…once the morning assembly is over, they start their prayers with loud speakers…. The annoying part is that they are not up to ten… Tell me how these kids will concentrate in class… Its so annoying

please they should come and shut down the mosque on my street, with their stupid megaphone, what do you need an amplifier for when there are just about 10 people?

    • lulu

      August 28, 2015 at 8:59 pm

Do they go on and on? Call to prayer is about 2 mins 5 times a day. You sound silly

    • Mocha

      September 2, 2015 at 10:12 am

You are the one who sounds silly. Whether it’s 2 mins, 10 hours or 1 second, laws againist noise pollution should be standard! There is no such things as the duration of your noise. That 5am sharp cry from mosques ALWAYS pierce into my sleep and I wake up grumpy half the time. So noise laws should be uniform. Simple.

    August 28, 2015 at 5:45 pm

never stops to amaze that those who should basically show by example what right living should be are the, very ones who act with very high degrees of impunity
why must it take the intervention of Lasepa for our so called religious houses/their leadership to know that noise pollution is a no no in a civilized environment. Another irritation that falls right behind this menace is the senseless horn honking habit of motorist in Lagos if we say we have no control over the constant cacophony of noise that our different power generating sets emit, are we also saying that we do not know when to and not to use horns (smh) . well this does not surprise me since anyone whether they know how to drive or not can with total ease obtain a drivers licence.
and talking about power generating sets as a people we can all learn to be considerate in our usage (one would have thought that the ‘necessity being a mother of all invention’ saying may have motivated us as a people towards inventing some sort of power source that is near noise less and still be affordable by most but hey we are Nigerians we are a consumer nation and not an inventing one)
    peace, prosperity & light

A true church would be considerate of residents in their neighbourhood and find ways to conduct their services to ensure no disturbance to the local residents. If you are inconsiderate then you are not operating under the Holy spirit. I see a lot of churches in my neck of the woods going into industrial areas which have no traffic on the weekends, cheaper rent,s and they can get as loud as they want without worrying about disturbing the neighbourhood.

I believe there is a section in the Bible which states you should not let your faith be a burden to others. I know there are times that I wish my mother was more considerate when she is in my home and doesn’t feel she can just freely get up and start singing or praying loudly at 4Am because she was ‘moved to. ..mtschewww.

I wonder why these churches cannot emulate noiseless worship services like The Deeper Christian Life Ministry – their mode of worship is decent&peaceful. These churches prefare to beat drums ceaselessly and fix speakers around, disturbing the neighborhood! Even the mosques around go in unison calling for prayers as early as 5.30a.m., screaming into their megaphones. Pheew! I’m glad the authority is taking these complaints seriously and acting on ’em.

Am a Christian and in support if the shutdown. Its highly unfair of the churches because they are predominantly in residential areas. Having services from mon to sunday wirh night vigil. The night clubs are soundproof. Likewiae the mosqye. Churches and primary school in every nook and crany of every street.

When I used to live in amuwo odofin, the mosque behind my house was my morning alarm, the club nearby was my lullaby.
It wasn’t easy. Churches are not the only culprits. The use of Megaphones should be prohibited. And noise pollution should be regulated..

  23. mabel

    August 29, 2015 at 8:39 am

Exactly megaphones should be prohibited. I don’t care if the call to worship is for a second. Don’t use megaphone simple. You close down churches then please do the same to mosques. A government with no sense. Instead of trying to create trouble between these two religions why not just do a simple thing like prohibiting megaphones?

  24. Mimee

    August 29, 2015 at 12:27 pm

If some churches have been decided to be shut down, does that mean even mosques should? Does that make sense to ya’ll?? And what noise does a mosque make? Call to prayer doesnt last more than 3-4mins and the whole prayer session 10mins tops… Muslims are never loud, we Nigerians are 1 and shouldn’t devide the nation. Besides not every church is loud, the 2 behind my estate are very quiet, we never hear them but some are excessively loud constantly.. And @TITILOPE you really shouldn’t be using “stupid”, no1 insulted any church so don’t go around insulting a mosque. We should be civil people..

  25. Mimee

    August 29, 2015 at 12:29 pm

megaphones are essential to muslims because that’s how it’s supposed to be. Its called “call to prayer” and that’s how it has always been… So no1 is banning any megaphone usage, well not for muslims.

When Jesus walked the earth he laid example of how to make disciples. It is unfortunate that Christians today have deviated from his foot steps. In making disciples Jesus quietly went from town to town, city to city presenting his message. He did not shout, or made noise. Those that accepted him he commended, those that rejected him he departed from them in peace. On few occasions that he worshipped in the synagogue the services were also quiet, sitting down listening to the holy writings read out, participating in questions and answers sections(The only time he probably shouted was when he drove out those dubious people from the temple) The Bible did not record any time Jesus was teaching and was shouting running from one side of the arena to the other. God is not deaf, it is not the amount of shouting that makes him listen to or answer prayers. Do we shout on our earthly father when requesting something from him? Not at all, we do so with humility. Christianity is a religion of peace. Let us imitate Jesus in our worship be it preaching in or out of our worship place, singing praises etc. All these can be done withot disturbing even the nearest neighbour.

All said and done, we need to ask if there were investigations into the reports made by these residents before any action was taken. Of course, we all know that there could be some reports as a result of religious bigotry and the said people at Alausa-LASEPA will actually need to put religious sentiments apart to do whatever they needed to do. Even though we are living in a community where most of our top civil servants in the state are muslims, including the Obas, traditional rulers and a host of others. But my questions are, who is reporting who? For example, if an Alfa had gone to report a Church or a Pastor had gone to report a Mosque, common sense requires that you should see a kind of sentiment in the accusations. It will take discipline on the sides of the Civil Servants called LASEPA, not to be easily bought by some unscrupulous elements in the society who want the Christian faith dead by all means, even if it means to give the dog a bad name so it could be killed.

I know a Medical Doctor who is hiding under noise pollution to stop a church around his Medical Centre named Motuary by Community Residents as he uses fetish to attack and attract customers to himself. He had attempted the life of the Pastor of this Church severally failed, before he woke to the fact that he could use LASEPA to close them down. People what do you see to this? This church is a noiseless church though.

well, its nt a surprising thing that christians are now turning against them selfs,Jesus had this discussed in the book of Mathew,if u,who is a christian is askn the government to shut down churches?what about a non christian ?we are using our hands to strangle our selfs,be very carefull about the things you say about God’s worship places,it is obvious that nt all who call him Lord shall enter his kindom, ask God to forgive you and pls reverse ur comments.1John 1:9…for u are prosecutn Jesus the second time, for asking the govt to shut down hs worship centres,.thus, why leave mosque out of this.? Is it because they are violent and might get u killed ?bewarnd, dnt play a role u cnt finish in a drama+be afraid of a kind person, than a wicked man,for his wrath comes with FIRE…
