Lupita for Lancome - April 2014 - BN Movies & TV - BellaNiajaWhen I was younger, I did not have a good skin care routine. I used whatever was available to wash my face and body, and picked body lotions based on fragrance.

Some years ago, when shopping for a lipstick, I met a woman at the Yves Saint Laurent makeup stand who asked me what my skin care routine was. When I told her about washing my face with soap, she advised that I work on getting a skin care routine together that would ensure my skin’s safety and beauty. She said – “Genes and luck help, but honestly, you need to start taking good care of your skin; there is no substitute for diligence.”

Since then, I have changed my skincare routine a number of times to suit different situations and environments. However, there are some rules that are constant, no matter what.

If you want to maintain good skin, make sure you incorporate these into your routine:

1. Drink water

Your skin is renewed on a daily basis. It gets rid of old and damaged cells, and like all of the cells in the human body, requires liquid replenishment on a daily basis.

Drinking between 2 and 4 litres of water a day contributes to the maintenance of your skin’s elasticity, and keeps the collagen in your skin nice and pliant. Water also helps your internal organs flush out toxins and impurities on a daily basis.

2. Use good skin care products

No matter what range or combination of products you decide to use, make sure that they help you make the most out of your skin’s potential.

I recently started using the Lancôme Nutrix Royal Body formula which I especially love at night. This product absorbs nicely into my skin and makes me at ease with its light fragrance.

3. Take off your makeup at night

Take the time to properly get rid of makeup you wear during the day. Your pores need time to breathe, and if you keep them clogged up with makeup you may find yourself with unsightly spots and blemishes.

4. Get enough rest

Your skin is an organ, much like your brain. And just like your brain, it needs enough time to rest at night. This time helps it get rejuvenated and charged up so it can function at its best in the morning.

5. Use sunscreen

There is a common misconception that black people don’t need to wear sunscreen. This is fallacy.

You need to use sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, and to help prevent cosmetic issues like wrinkles, skin tags, and skin cancer.

6. Eat your fruits and vegetablesBN Beauty - BellaNaija - January2015_001
Eat your way to healthy skin with lots of water-rich fruits and leafy green vegetables. These work from the inside out and give you inner & outer beauty.

7. Treat your skin gently

Your skin is the largest organ on your body. It lives, breathes, and moves to adjust and protect the rest of your body. This is why it is important to monitor the products that come in contact with your skin.

You could have adverse reactions such as rashes, burns, dryness etc that would make your skin look worse than when you started.

8. Massage your skin

In line with treating it gently, every once in a while you should try massaging your skin. This improves blood flow & circulation and helps ease stress from your muscles and joints.

9. Exfoliate

BN Beauty - Bellanaija - September006Exfoliation is an excellent way to get rid of dead skins cells and debut the new ones. It helps keep the skin from looking ashy and dry, and unravels new skin that is soft and shiny.

10. Exercise

Aside from all of the endorphins that working out produces, exercise promotes good health and great skin by increasing the flow of oxygen to your entire body. This also helps you drink more water, which in turn keeps your skin tighter and hydrated.
