A 26-year-old man, Happiness Umaru, has been arrested by the Gender Department of Lagos State Police Command for the kidnap of a seven-month-old baby and will be charged to court today.

The young man, according to the Vanguard, confessed to the crime during interrogation by policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, who had accosted him at Eric Moore, Surulere, at about 10 pm on March 16.

After initially pretending to be the baby’s biological father, Umaru confessed that he had found the baby around Ijora Railway, when he went to the bush to ease himself. The case was then transferred to the Gender Department of Lagos State Police Command for further investigation after which officers from the unit went to the scene of the incident, where they found the baby’s biological mother and released the baby, named Favour Victor, to her.

The mother, Patricia Victor, said, “I laid my seven months old baby on the bed inside my house at about 8 pm to buy food for my son. By the time I returned with the food for my older son, my baby had disappeared …”

She continued, “I did not know that police officers had arrested the man who stole my baby. Luckily, when they came the next day to investigate the case, they located me.”
