A thing of beauty is a joy forever. This is applicable to houses especially when the quality of the building materials is not compromised for cost. Our house has been standing for almost four years and asides minor repairs (like installing Emilinks fittings), it is still standing strong.
However, it has not always been like that. We have come close to calamity on a few occasions. While living in a rented apartment, the greedy landlord would collect the rent when due but would never perform minor repairs. At the same time, he wouldn’t give us permission to fix the ceiling that had begun to leak whenever it rained or build a loft over the window to prevent rain from trickling in.
One fateful night, it rained cats and dogs. Apart from the roof and windows that were leaking, rain started to seep in from under the door. We immediately got to work, mopping water and moving our property to drier areas. After a while, out of sheer frustration and hopelessness, we huddled up in a corner. It was pointless packing water out because the more we worked, the more the water flowed in.
Then calamity struck. A wooden beam that had been weakened by water fell, bringing splinters of asbestos with it. But for the quick reflexes of my elder brother, he would have been severely injured. He got away with minor scratches on his arm and leg.
By morning, we were weary with exhaustion. Nobody could go to work. We salvaged what was left of our property and put some outside to dry.
While I was outside, I heard a loud noise. The wall where I had just spread my clothes collapsed. It was a close shave.
The landlord came round and offered his apologies but my dad would not have any of it. If looks could kill, the landlord would have been dead and buried. The collapsing of the roof and wall could easily have led to our deaths.
Of course, the landlord did the necessary repairs but my dad started planning to build our house. He wasn’t earning much but he told us that he couldn’t skimp on quality. I don’t know why most Nigerians prefer quality to quantity. Most would rather eat a tasteless large bowl of meal than a tasty small bowl of meal. Same also as regards to building. Some would prefer building a one story house with substandard materials than a bungalow with standard material.
I remember just few months ago, a heavy downpour occurred in my vicinity, people’s hoases fell down, some had their rooftops blown away, some had their fences broken down, the rain damaged a lot of things.
I can’t forget the face of a woman that lost her entire poultry to the rain, another lost some of his clothes because the rain swept them away. Many had a story to tell, it was indeed a black day for some.
I just had to help console them, I wonder why people would risk their lives and stay in a building that you know has issues even when people tell you about them. I know people who have lost their loved ones and their source of livelihood hood due to disasters that occurred as a result of such usage.
Standard organization of nigeria, I must say are really doing a good job in ensuring that the menace raging the building industry is curbed.
What about the drainage systems, it’s nothing to write home about. Some contractors build roads without a drainage system and it’s bad because when the rains come, the road gets flooded leading to breakdown of vehicles and also flooding which is a disaster.
I can say that use of substandard materials in building has led to a lot of loss of lives and properties.
Organizations and individuals need to stand up to this menace. Emilinks NG has risen up to the menace and it’s left for others to follow suit. Say no to loss of lives and properties. Don’t be a miser! don’t be a cheat! Don’t be a greedy fellow. Our lives are important, greed mustn’t be the order of the day. 5) Motun K. – There was dis man who owns a house in my street called baba ajala he’s a self centered person and doesnt like listening to other people opinions he happens to own another building at the next street spending a lot of money on the building buying sub standard products in the house because he is a very rich man but he was advised by another friend who lives in the same street not to use the materials he used but because he is an aggressive rich person and self centered he thought the person was saying all dat so dat he could benefit from him so he didnt even pay attention to what the person told him, the building was very a beautiful one and it was a dream house for everyone who passed by the building and the man was happy people were appreciating his building, unfortunately the happiness was short lived because some months later a heavy downpour occured and caused a lot of havoc and destruction to houses and and property.the kind of rainstorm dat could uproot a tree.so this man’s house was not left out as heavy wind and and rainfall destroyed the house and 3 people sustained serious injuries.the man was suprised why such a thing could happened to his building so he decided to see a friend in regret to ask for an advise he rejected nd he was directed to Emilinks store. The house was a beauty to behold after completion. Everybody that came for the service of songs praised the contractor for doing a good job. On the day of the interment, there was a very strong wind and heavy rainfall. To our greatest surprise, the wind blew off the roof and the part of the house where my grandmother was to be buried, collapsed. It was a big embarrassment and we had no choice than to bury her in the collapsed nouse. After the burial, we found out that the contractor used substandard materials. 8) @mhiz__ese – @bellanaijaonline May 8th, 2013 is a day not to forget in a hurry. An electronic shop worth millions of Naira which served as a source of income for catering a family of eight vanished into thin air, because of a building constructed with substandard materials.

It all started when we moved our goods worth tens of millions of Naira to a newly constructed shop. At exactly a week after we moved into the new building, my mum and I left for the shop that morning to do business as usual but to our greatest surprise, the storey building where the shop was located had collapsed. I was shocked! “Were we not here yesterday? ” I asked my mother who was even wondering if we where in the right place.

The contractor later confessed that he used substandard materials in constructing the building. This selfish act made my siblings and I to stay away from school for two sections, sometimes going to bed without food, leaving us at the mercy of friends and well wishers for a very long time.

The acid test to be sure you are awarding a project to a good contractor is to ask the contractor a very simple question, “do you know Emilinks?” If the contractor has no idea about Emilinks, Please, put your arms underneath your shoulders and held on for dear life because, that contractor is like a bomb going some where to explode.

During one summer break from school, I decided to spend two weeks with my aunt at agege… One faithful day, I decide to follow her to shop and I noticed that most of the building around there were not looking strong enough, they were looking old and I wasn’t comfortable staying close to some of the building due to the way they looked… Few months later when I returned to school, I got a call from my aunt saying that her shop had collapsed due to the poor foundation of the house around it and she lost so many goods……. I was so down and I decided to pay her a visit… On getting there I met her husband discussing about building a new shop for her across their house.. Sometime later he called a contractor and began to negotiate with the man. When he dropped the call I told him not to go too far that he should visit Emilinks store for whatever materials he needs in order not to have same experience again… @bellanaijaonline

Many people don’t care about the type of house they build or the type of material they use so far it’s cheap they don’t care. Most Nigerians wants to become landlords and landladies overnight and they build these houses in less than six months with substandard materials. The worst is that they don’t even care about the lives of those in the building, all they are concerned about is the rent they get from it.
Like a church containing more than 2000 lives you can’t just endanger those lives just because you are economising the materials. For example imagine the earthquake that happened in Italy some days ago if it happens in most part of this country 70% of houses that are not even close to the affected area would not just have cracks in the wall but would be completely destroyed. Building nice home is not all about the beauty but also about the security.
