On episode 6 of ‘Conversations with Labo’, Labo Daniel speaks with Biola Alabi, Managing partner Biola Alabi Media, also described by Forbes as one of Africa’s power women, on Feminism.

Labo asked her,

Whenever the word, feminism, women liberation, women empowerment, or any other freedom movement for women is mentioned, it tends to be received with negative responses … people get really aggressive and it comes from men and even women…. Why are people afraid of women being free…liberated?

Biola’s response is very revealing. Not only did she define feminism and tell us what people are afraid of, she sets the record straight on so many misconceptions about feminism in a way that would make you want to become a feminist, if you are not one already.

“Feminism is not about women trying to be men, it’s about recognising the contribution women are making and making sure that we’re all living in the confines of fairness…. It is in everyone’s best interest to protect women’s rights”.

She speaks on how we can protect womens rights at the feet of the almighty African tradition and says there’s no such thing as an angry feminist.

It’s just an easy way for people to dismiss you. It’s OK to be angry and infuriated about injustice, it is however important to be able to communicate that anger and think about a platform to communicate it.”

In 2014, Biola Alabi shocked the entire continent when she resigned as the Managing Director of MNET in 2014. She ended the interview with tips on Leadership, Entrepreneurship, what scares her and what success means to her.
