The Crime Suppression Division (CSD) of Thailand’s Police has arrested a Nigerian, Chinaka Chinedu, who is said to be 23-years-old, and his Thai wife, Uraporn Kesawatana, 34 for allegedly scamming Thai women seeking for marriage, to the tune of 20 million Thai Baht (about N180m).

Bangkok Post reports that the CSD deputy commander, Sithatkhet Khruwatanaset said the duo were arrested on Phetkasem 77 Road in Nong Khaem district, Bangkok.

Sithatket said that Chinedu got his victims through chatting websites. He said that the suspect claimed to be a rich and handsome Caucasian. After nurturing the relationship for a while, Chinedu proposed marriage to the unsuspecting women.

The police chief said that Chinedu told the women to send money for him to bribe airport authorities to get his ‘cargoes’ stuck at the airport. As soon as they agreed, his wife, Uraporn sent bank account details and told them to transfer US$30,000-50,000.

The report stated that they shut their phones right after receiving money.

They were arrested after many of the victims showed up at Bangkok’s main airport to bribe authorities and claim the said ‘cargoes’. This prompted airport authorities to report the case to the CSD.

CSD also said that they are on the trail of two other Thai women who are members of the syndicate.

Uraporn also confessed that she transferred some of the money to their accomplices in Malaysia. She also said the scam had continued for a year and they made off with about 20 million baht.

Following investigations, it was also discovered that Chinedu’s visa had expired.
