President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement that his wife belongs to his kitchen, the living room and the other room, was the subject of jokes about three times on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday.

During yesterday’s sitting which lasted for less than two hours, the president’s statement became a joking subject three times.

The deputy whip of the Senate, Senator Biodun Olujimi (PDP, Ekiti South), while contributing to the debate on the release of 21 Chibok schoolgirls, said that “as we (women) stand, not only in the kitchen, but in the Senate and also, in every important place, we believe that the men will support us to achieve our goals that our girls remain girls and are also able to aspire to be whatever they want to be in Nigeria.”

Apparently responding to her, the chairman, Senate committee on women affairs, Senator Binta Masi Garba (APC, Adamawa North), said: “My primary constituency is to be in the Kitchen before even being in the senate, as a woman. And I am proud to be in the Kitchen and even the other room”.

Again, while contributing to the debate on confirmation of the Supreme Court justices, Senator Joshua Lidani (PDP, Gombe South), said that the responsibility of women was not limited to kitchen and “the other room.”
