Quoting family and medical sources, Premium Times reports that Senator Isiaka Adeleke (APC-Osun) may have died from an overdose of painkillers in his system.

Adeleke was confirmed dead on Sunday at Biket Hospital, Osogbo.

“We learnt he was injected by one of his personal physicians said to have administered similar drugs on him in the past to suppress nagging pains in one of his legs,” one source said.

Adeleke’s burial was postponed from Sunday to Monday, after his younger brother Deji Adeleke ordered that an autopsy be carried out on him.

The autopsy was done at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital.

The preliminary result of the autopsy has since been made available to the family but not yet made public, Premium Times said.

“There will still be more examination on the tissue sample collected so as to ascertain the exact cause of death as people have been speculating poison,” a source at the hospital said.

Angry youths on Monday disrupted his funeral in a bid to chase one Idiat Babalola, a commissioner nominee of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The youths alleged that Adeleke was poisoned to prevent him from running for governor in 2018.

Adeleke became the first elected Governor of Osun State in 1991 on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

He represented Osun West in the Senate between 2007 and 2011 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He defected to All Progressives Congress (APC), after a failed governorship bid under PDP in 2014. He won the senatorial seat in 2015 under the APC.
