In the last few days, Dove, the personal care brand owned by Unilever has been facing backlash on and off social media for an ad campaign they ran for one of their soaps.

The backlash was reinforced after the company deleted the ad which was posted on their Facebook page and issued an apology.

“An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offense it caused,” Dove wrote on Twitter.

Screenshots showed a black woman removing her top to reveal a white woman, causing outrage from people from all racial backgrounds.

However, the full video has been found and it showed that after the white woman was revealed, she also removed her clothes to also reveal a Latino woman.

The full video has torn commenters into two parts: the first group is saying it is clearly not a racist ad, but one which shows that the soap is good for women of all skin colours.

The other group however, is saying the company still missed the mark considering the racist history of soaps and creams ads. This group insists that body washes are supposed to be good for all skin types, and the company is racialising a product for no reason. They insist the ad can be interpreted as saying even blacks and other women of colour can use their soaps.
