Behind the Microphone! Introducing 10 Radio Personalities Who Keep Nigerians Entertained

With the rise of podcasts, satellite and Internet radio services, there is the fear that terrestrial radio might be losing ground. However, while the state of radio may have indeed become diluted and fractured,  millions of listeners are still interested in radio. People want to hear interesting, original stories, the kind that public radio shows excel at. Even more, the public radio format has gotten trendy with the times and certain broadcasters have figured out a way to insert their unique personality into the public consciousness.

If you are a radio listener, you know what we are talking about. These broadcasters are the ones who have captured audiences with their humor, their personality and their originality on air. Over the years we have seen many presenters doing their thing and loved their work:  Daddy FreezeOlisa Adibua, Lolo 1, Toke Makinwa, Tolu (Toolz) Demuren, and more. However, there are quite a number of others are also doing very well for themselves. Some of these OAPs are relatively new to the field and some have quite a measure of experience.

We’ve decided to turn our spotlight on some radio personalities that you may not know and need to watch out for.

Sophia Anidugbe

The radio presenter, singer and writer, Sophia Anidugbe, jokingly refers to herself as a ‘not-so-girly-girl’. Sister to popular Nigerian artiste – Kiss Daniel, she is currently the host of the popular breakfast show on Cool FM Kano  ‘Good Morning Nigeria Show’ (5am – 10am), as well as the ‘Sunday Morning Oasis’ (6am – 12pm). Sophie’s shows attract several high profile guests, which has made her a public figure to reckon with.

Her radio charisma has also ensured great chemistry with numerous fans who listen to her voice every morning.

Before joining Cool FM Kano, she worked with the first privately owned radio station in Abeokuta, Rock City Fm. In addition to being a radio host, Sophia is involved in charity work and is currently an active member of Orphans and Women Support Foundation.

Douglas Jekan

Douglas Jekan
Douglas Jekan is a vibrant, spontaneous and happy fellow who loves the challenges of presenting and entertaining/engaging people on air. Currently the host of  the Night Show, which is aimed at pushing traffic to good music, on Monday – Friday 9pm – 1am;  the #SAS (Saturday Afternoon Show – 12pm – 6pm) with his co-host Dami; and At The Club With Remy Martin Show (#AtClubRemyMartin) which airs every Saturday at 9pm.

He founded the PGM Club in 2015 which is aimed at pushing Nigerian talents to the world and has constantly been involved charity work such as the Zamaar institute for Autistic children in Abuja. He is also currently assisting (Federal Nigerian Society for the blind) to raise awareness on the need to support young adolescents, who are visually impaired, to achieve their potentials

Richard Ekpo Oluwaseun

If you are in Ibadan and you know the line: “Put a smile on someone’s face today and watch it get back to you in million folds”, you probably have heard of Richard Ekpo Oluwaseun. A presenter, editor, producer, scriptwriter, and voice-over artist, he is multitalented. Popularly known as Rhyno007, he is the host of the program ‘SUNDAY FAMILY GROOVE’ alongside Oladapo Okunubi ‘Young Striker’ on Sunday at 12 noon to 7 pm as well as ‘LOVE HAVEN’, Monday–Friday by 7 pm Inspiration on 100.5fm Ibadan. He also anchors ‘HEALTH MATTERS’ on Saturday from 5.30pm to 6 pm and anchors ‘THE DRIVE ‘on Wednesdays from 4 pm to 7 pm.

Jennifer Nzewunwah
Free-spirited and bohemian, Jennifer Nzewunwah is best known for her work on Abuja airwaves. Her shows are rated top notch in the nation’s capital city airspace.

Her first job on the radio was at Kiss Fm, Abuja, in 2010, where she hosted several shows on the radio. She then headed to Cool Fm in 2013 where she currently hosts of the afternoon show (The Roadshow Hitch-Hikers) and the Sunday Morning Praise Jam.
Besides being a radio presenter, she is also a producer and content director and freelances as an interviewer and presenter, voice-over artist, and MC – hosting proceedings for countless conferences, corporate events, and charity fund-raisers. In addition to her involvement with broadcasting, Jennifer is an ambassador, volunteer, and supporter of the girl child, the equal rights and representation of women in today’s society.

Uke Ogah

Uke Ogah juggles the responsibilities of being a broadcaster, a compere, writer and public speaker. Presently with Hit95.9 FM Calabar, The first private radio station in Cross River State, she hosts the flagship breakfast show called Hit Breakfast Show which holds 06:00 am to 09:00 am,  Mondays to Fridays, and broadcasts the news as well.

Her style of presentation is uniquely quirky and full of humor.  In addition to her work on air, Uke is the founder of TeamUkeOgah, a NON-PROFIT group that supports and inspires young people in today’s society through youth-oriented meetings, one-on-one interaction, and the Read-up Initiative which is targeted at improving literacy among Primary and secondary school children. She will be launching her web series #NotReallyUke this year.

Abimbola Ajayi

Abbi is not just a radio girl, but a health influencer as well. Her career began at the WCLK 91.9 Radio Jazz Atlanta of the International African Connection Show, before moving to establish AbbiFab Dynamics. She hosts a show about love, sex and relationship titled “Pillow Talk With Abbi” on Classic FM 97.3, Thursdays at 10 PM.

Her versatility comes alive with her unique passion for love, intimacy, and successful relationships, women’s health, as well as the mission to make a difference as a Nigerian American millennial – regardless of the numerous obstacles faced in Africa.  Abbi’s inspiration and motivation is her love for Africa, especially Nigeria. Her dream is to host a live TV show, and eventually start a charity for sexually abused people.

Ukwuoma Marvin

Radio personality, television host, and producer, Ukwuoma Marvin is the type of guy you wouldn’t mind listening to all the time. His voice has a soft feel that gets you falling in love with him. He started his journey as an OAP and VJ with Raypower 102.5fm and AIT (DAAR COMMUNICATIONS) Bayelsa where he earned Best Voice on Radio award at the Bayelsa media Awards (BMA) in 2015. He currently works at Quest 93.1fm and Quest television in Delta state.

Esther Mohammed

Known as Stargal, Esther Mohammed is currently the host of the Night Life Show on KU92.7FM Benin. Although new to the world of radio, she is quite ardent at producing and casting pidgin news as well as voicing pidgin content. She is sometimes referred to as the Benin queen of the airwaves as she is fondly called Madam Traffic Light.

When it comes to her philosophy about life, Esther believes life doesn’t give you what you deserve, it gives you what you demand and earn through your hard work.

Moses C. Nwokedi

Moses C. Nwokedi
Moses C. Nwokedi, also known as BiGMO (which is an acronym for Beginning In God’s MOvement) has a thing for mimicking accents, such as the Indian, Liberian & Jamaican accents.

He is the host of the morning show tagged #UnaWakeUpShow 5am-10am on 99.5 Wazobia Fm Abuja. He also has a thing for being behind the camera, which has landed him in a couple of movies, with recent ones such as MR & MRS ONOJA and DEMON INSIDE, which is the most recent.

He is an ambassador for SocialGoodNG, a Community Media Champion for Follow The Money and a member of the African Youth Initiative on Population, Health & Development (AfrYPoD).

Anastasia Uchenna

Anastasia Uchenna
Radio producer and news presenter, Anastasia Uchenna describes herself as a very blunt person, goal getter, and a feminist. She is the co-anchor of the program ‘People and Politics’ on Magic 102.9 FM Aba and she coordinates, produces and presents other current affairs and political programmes on the station.
