Product Developer Extraordinaire Funfere Koroye of Nupe Project is our #BellaNaijaMCM this Week!

As a toddler, #BellaNaijaMCM this week Funfere Koroye was always interested in how toys and appliances worked, and he always took them apart to understand their workings.

He later discovered his passion for creating and designing, drawing inspiration from Steve Jobs and Dieter Rams. He decided to follow that path, bagging degrees in Industrial and Product Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design and Domus Academy (Bachelors and Masters degrees respectively).

In about a decade, Funfere has been involved in designing and developing products for several industries including FMCG, fintech, footwear and furniture

Funfere started off designing footwear, then mobile phones, and packaging for the food and beverage industry.

He currently works as Design Director & Footwear Engineer at Thando’s and also as Brand Designer and Packaging Developer at Fusion Design Lab.

He’s worked with JUMP Footwear, African Basketball League, and Tecno Mobile.

Funfere is a co-founder of a tech and design startup, the Nupe Project, an initiative focused on solving the many challenges affecting many third world countries specifically, while simultaneously fostering the ignored 1% of African talent in Hardware development.

One of Nupe Project’s first products, The Nugas Smart Meter is an innovative LPG cylinder regulator which uses smart metering features that combines GPS and IOT technology to eliminate upfront fuel costs and enables millions of homes to access clean portable energy in Africa and other 3rd world countries.

Some of Funfere’s innovations also include designing a diffuser system which repels insects by using a mist system and an automated timer; a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector which sends alerts to any kind of phone – either as a text message or notification in an app; and a tube-like water filter that fits into most regular plastic bottles with the sole purpose of distilling unclean water inexpensively.

In 2018, he was commissioned to work on developing/designing a solar battery which is currently powering the homes of thousands of East Africans without access to electricity on the grid.

Funfere is not just following his passion, he’s also using his skills to develop problem-solving products for Africa and Africans, while also empowering the next generation of hardware developers.
