Bill to Prohibit Same-Sex Marriage Passes Second Reading in House of Representatives

From all indications, Nigerian lawmakers are taking the “fight” against same sex marriage very seriously. On Tuesday 13th November 2012, a bill for an act to prohibit marriage or civil union entered into between persons of the same sex and solemnisation of same,  passed through the second reading in the House of Representatives.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Rep. Mulikat Akande-Adeola (PDP-Oyo) who led the debate on the bill said the proposed legislation would ensure that the institution of marriage is respected and would also protect and preserve the Nigerian culture.

This practice has no place in our culture, religion, Nigeria or anywhere in Africa, it is immorality and debasement of our culture, we condemn it in totality.

Rep. Abike Dabiri-Erewa (ACN-Lagos), who also supported the bill, said the solemnisation of same sex marriage had no place in Nigerian culture saying “it is repulsive”.

On his part, minority leader, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila (ACN-Lagos) described same sex marriage as immoral.

In this marriage, the third party is affected, these people go ahead and adopt children, thereby affecting the child, and in the process the child becomes dysfunctional. We are not seeking to promote a dysfunctional society,” he stated.

The bill was also supported by most members of the House who raised arguments against same sex marriages.

There was no dissenting voice and the bill sailed through second reading after being put to vote by Speaker Aminu Tambuwal. He subsequently referred it to the Committee of the Whole House for consideration.

The Senate had in November 2011 passed a bill banning same sex marriages in the country.

With security issues, poverty, healthcare deficiencies as other pressing issues in Nigeria, critics have argued that the Same Sex Marriage Ban Bill is simply a means used by Nigerian lawmakers to distract from their lack of action in important areas while supporters of the bill claim that it is essential to maintain the “moral standards” in our country.

    Shame on all these leaders. We are busy chasing the shadows of a practice that truthfully has never been a threat to African culture. The real threat to our culture is corruption, adultery, sexual violence against women and children, not homosexualism. But since we are all holier than God, we would rather demonise innocent people than face the real demons in society. Big shame!!!

      There are more pressing theme that must be addressed. I am not a fan of same-sex marriage, but I am for a free society. But lynch-justice, high unemployment among graduates, poor infrastructure, corruption, poor medical care, etc., are major problems that should be combated!

      Yes people are practising it openly and secretly but does it make it right? That is the issue on ground and not whether people do it at night and pretend by day. What is wrong is wrong so let us stop looking for who to blame and try and correct the wrong. Even before the gay rights became an issue, those who are gay hide to do it that only tells you that they themselves feel they’re doing something wrong. If it was so normal, they wouldnt be secret about it. Those who hide to practise it do so because in their hearts they know what they are doing is so wrong that people must not find out.
      The lawmakers are on point for once in their miserable lives.

        Abi, when it concerns women, orphans, the poor, etc, it is not a problem. I feel that we focus on what interests us. The House of Thieves focus so much on homosexuality because they practice it more than others. Its like Pastors in Nigeria who are vehemently against fornication and yet do not mind sleeping with church members.

        The real problem in Nigeria is HYPOCRISY. To many people PRETENDING TO BE WHAT THEY ARE NOT. Women buying ANIMAL hair to look like Kim K. Men spending lavishly on cars to live like JayZ and Kanye. These are people who cannot afford luxury but must live a life that refuses to engage them in any discussion. The irony.

        With hypocrisy comes stealing, cheating, condemnation, corruption, killing, and plenty others. Once you are not transparent and lack integrity (which most Nigerians with HIGH MORAL VALUES have), nothing, absolutely nothing will WORK in that and any society.

    Sorry people. But its not everything about western ideology we must copy. Marraige between those of the same sex is an abomination before God (as are all sins we all commit so I’m not being judgment o) and we should not be legalising it on our country.

    The probem with the West, is that its their way or no way. Those who are rising up condeming the bill have been brain washed into believing that the way of the West is the way forward. It is not the case. lets cherish our own morals and the ideals we strive to acheive and set an example for the West.

    I dont think homophobia is right at all – I believe in loving and respecting all equally but that doesnt mean we must legalise and legitimise immoral activities. Thats like saying we should legalise Aristo behaviour and adultery because almost everyone in Lagos engages in it (a silly example, but I hope you catch my drift)

Majority of Nigerians oppose same sex marriage and the reps wants to ride on the populace cocktails. Personally, I think the bill is a waste of legislative time and the institution of marriage is already shaky with the level of adultery that goes one among the rich including the legislators

    Lets call a spade a spade. A sin is a sin no matter how big or small. God says love your neighbours, He didnt say dont love Gays or Lesbos, after all we all shed the same tear, and our blood is RED no matter what. We live in a day and age that is polluted with all sorts and it’s already scary enough that we dont know what will come out of all this. But God surely knows that all will come to an end. The westerners didnt bring in Gay and same same sex and transgender culture. (Have y’all forgotten sodom and gormorrah in the bible)Everything that we think is new and happening now all happened in the bible, so there’s nothing new under God’s eye.

    I just really hope we as individuals maintain OUR morals and teach our children (The future) what is right, acceptable and just. So nevermind whats happening now, think about your children and their future, now thats a scary thought. Trust me this is not a problem, this is a minor problem compared to whats going on in our country.

If your child confronts you with this issue, i hope you will be able to tell him or her that “Everything that we think is new and happening now all happened in the bible, so there’s nothing new under God’s eye” rather than condenmming a wrong act. Homosextuality is a sin. Even a hardened criminal knows stealing is bad and will not come out to support it or wuld want his children to be lyk him. Even if those against it practice it, it is commendable that they stand against it in one voice. Please, peaches say the right thing and nt beating around the bush.

If you believe in the Almighty as creator, you’d know to attack gays is like racism or sexism. Let us spend precious time and money on tackling the corruption and incompetence which trap us in the gutter. You send a gay to a prison, a same-gender institution, and that will reform him? Why does everyone have to be subjected to being a Christian or a Muslim. Why must they shove their believes down our throat. I am a practicing Hindu and a pure Vegan — It’s a sin and against what I choose to belief to eat meat or any animal products or by products. I have very close friends that are Christians and Muslims that eat meat and I don’t treat them any different from my Hindu friends that are vegan. About 85% of the people in India are Hindu’s and pure Vegans (eating meat is a sin) — however that doesn’t mean they should treat the other 15% (that eat meat) that are – Christians, Muslims, Buddhist, Sikhism, Jainism any differently. Please let them Channel their energy on the run down country – there is corruption, boko haram on a killing spree, horrendous airport, horrifying airplanes, terrible roads, outdated hospitals, incompetent doctors, flood, No power supply, fuel scarcity (and they are the 7th largest crude oil Nation in the world). There are a ton of things to fix in the Country.

    Same sex union, whatever name you call it, lesbianism, Homosexualism etc is un african, it is a social disorder and is against the very essence of human nature.

    Right from the creation of the world. God created Adam and Eve(male and female)and laid down the natural law of creation which is between a man and a woman. Same sex union is against the law of nature. It is not a surprise that many counties in the world including Nigeria has rightly legislated against it.

    The simple question i have for the protagonist of the same sex union is this Are you a product of same sex marriage?
