Ghana Football Association dissolved after release of Documentary Exposing Corruption

Ghana has dissolved its football association following a BBC “Africa Eye” documentary exposing corrupt football officials in West Africa.

Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi was seen receiving a $65,000 cash gift from undercover journalists with the belief that they were meeting to discuss a sponsorship deal.

Nyantakyi, who is vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and also a member of the Fifa Council, was filmed in a luxury hotel in the Middle East, where he was made to believe he was meeting a wealthy businessman.

According to BBC, Nyantakyi wrote a sponsorship deal on behalf of GFA, that would allow part of the money go to a company he owned.

BBC reports that Ghana’s information minister Mustapha Abdul-Hamid said the government had “decided to take immediate steps to have the GFA dissolved”, citing the “widespread nature of the apparent rot”.

Fifa is yet to react to the dissolution. However, parts of its rules is that governments should not interfere in football administration.

Abdul-Hamid said interim measures would soon be announced.

BBC reports that Nyantakyi is also facing investigation for allegedly fraudulently using the President Nana Akufo-Addo‘s name, including the names of other senior government officials to ask “potential investors” to give money.
