Nigerian Professor Maurice Iwu & Other Scientists Record Breakthrough in HIV/AIDS Treatment

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a breakthrough in the treatment of HIV/AIDS with the discovery and approval of a drug developed by a team of scientists including Nigeria’s Professor Maurice Iwu.

The new drug, an oral botanical drug called Crofelemer is the second botanical, and an orally administered drug to be approved by FDA since 2006. The first botanical drug to be approved in the United States was a topical green tea extract, Veregen, in 2006. Both botanical drugs meet all US pharmaceutical requirements and can be dispensed only by prescription.

The research which led to the development of Crofelemer was carried out in the United States by a team of scientists including Professor Iwu, an acclaimed pharmacologist and tropical medicine expert.

According to Vanguard, the approval of Crofelemer was annouced on New Year’s Eve by the US Food and Drug Administration. It is used to treat HIV -associated diarrhea.

Crofelemer is the first drug to be approved in the United States to treat HIV -associated diarrhea. It is derived from the latex of the South American sangre de drago tree (dragon’s blood, Croton lechleri). A red, blood-resembling latex leaks from the tree when its bark is cut, and it is this substance that contains the novel polymolecular structure crofelemer, originally developed and standardized by Shaman Pharmaceuticals. Fulyzag (Crofelemer) is the second botanical drug approved by the agency. The drug’s approval marks an important event in the decades-long history of Crofelemer.”

This is welcoming news especially for Nigerians who feel proud that one of our own was on the team that developed this drug. It is hoped that more breakthroughs in HIV/AIDS treatment would be found soon.

Congrats to the Research Team. I’m proud to be associated with Prof Iwu on this matter. It pays to stay put in your field Prof. Leave Politics for Politicians…I respect Technocrats/proven career people more.

    • Soraya January 6, 2013 at 5:07 pm

Yes, I agree with you. Iwu was a well meaning guy but was completely out of his depth in INEC. Nevertheless, he played a major role in helping to facilitate the move to electronic voting in Nigeria

When you have your career in check, you do not need to play politics. The news will come right to your doorstep. The short-cut I-can-get-rich-quick syndrome we see many of our youth emulating from conditions in our society bemoans of fear to me. I hope that we can sincerely see through Prof. Key’s career and go back to studies. Even though he left politics on a questionable note, his career (which he worked hard for) has paid off. People, get up for education in Nigeria! Be the change agent by supporting education in any small measure you can. With our collective effort, our leaders cannot but do things right! http://www.thelearningcraft.blogspot.com

I remember a while ago some people did some investigations and found out he (Iwu) bought his degrees from quack Universities. Mmmm. With this, all the best to him.

    • Nigerian January 5, 2013 at 9:52 pm

Very impressive. About time a huge breakthrough happens about HIV/AIDS. Great job to the research team, and Professor Iwu, we are very proud of you. Almost every Nigerian I know is a doctor or wants to be a doctor, which is a good thing. I wish we invest more in innovation not just having a job, so we can have big house and big cars. Nigeria/Africa needs deep thinkers, inventors, innovators and brilliant leaders to take the country and continent to where it can be.

    @ Olayinka Awofodu…. A very good point!

  • abbey January 6, 2013 at 11:03 am

Iwu is a fraud …..read Sahara report on how he bought his certificate. @ olayinka…you right-NOT HIV….more like diarrhea. still have no respect for the ugly man that ruined a crucial election…lets not forget that fact.

  • dinma January 6, 2013 at 3:23 pm

if Iwu is a fraud how come the US has not delisted him?Let us learn to celebrate our own.Politics was never his calling, the powers that be knew that.It was easy for them to use him as a front to execute their plans.Kudos prof we celebrate your success.

    @ abbey January 6, 2013 at 11:03 AM
So you are relying on a dogy website like Sahara Reporters to tell you that Iwu bought his certificate??? If Iwu’s certificate was ‘bought’ as you and your friends at Sahara Reporters are alleging, do you think that the FDA would have allowed this drug to be approved??? The FDA checks the qualifications of all scientists and pharmacists involved in manufacturing drugs before approving those drugs. I understand that Iwu received his degree from University of Bradford in England, so you can check with the university if you are interested in finding out

  • Tosin January 6, 2013 at 7:03 pm

I like the botanicals idea. The name of this drug reminds me of “poisoned dragon’s liver” from the movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Jazz all the way. Fascinating.

  • Boom January 6, 2013 at 10:00 pm

He is a professor f Pharmacognosy not Pharmacology

  • Onakachi January 6, 2013 at 10:12 pm

This is good. Like the writer of this post said, I hope more breakthroughs are found for the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

The REAL achievement is impressive enough; this is why I do not think the headline is correct. The drug is used to manage HIV-RELATED diarrhea, not the HIV/AIDS itself. Well done to the team but the reporters should please be more factual!

  • akomaye January 7, 2013 at 3:24 pm

this is Good news if only the scientist board has approved the reseach.let not hapi over speculations.indeed it show’s us that God blesses the work of our hands kudos prof and crew.i,m hglad you returned to ur profession,

Like a father God visits his children to know their problems and how to help them . He came to the white man and He said father keep the background and qualifications just give me innovative and lasting solutions to use and sell to mankind. This He did!. Then he came to the Blackman he said give me the background and the qualifications and a lot of money to buy the solutions to life problems. That he also did,! What’s the result.? . Today the accedemics of Bill Gates , Steve Jobs , or even Albert Einstein was never an issue for their society to accept their ideas which has frog leaped humanity. While our brothers in Sahara Reporters are working had to defame world accepted achivers from our little black extraction. The human error in the reported actions or biography of their victims pales into insignificance when compared to their achivements sacrifices and contribution to society. .from Obasanjo to Okonjo iwuala …………..prof iwu everybody is a fraud waiting to be exposed!!!!!!!
