Mya Williams: A Bright Outlook

A few weeks ago I heard some news and I can easily say it will remain the best news I will receive all year! A lot of times, as human beings, we go through difficulties and challenges in life, which without even considering external factors are already hard to deal with, talk less of when you do have those factors to deal with. People handle their problems differently; some are very practical about things, if there’s nothing you can do personally to change it, why worry at all (like my friend Evan).

Others are professional worriers, even when they know they can’t change it (like my sister), while some just continue to over think/analyse/dissect, hoping it will make the problem play out differently (like me). Some however, ensure they do all they possibly can to help/change the situation they are in, and when they know they’ve done all they humanly can, they just let go and maintain a bright outlook. With these people, if you didn’t know there was something up, you would never know. These people are a wonder to watch.

When my friend called, to tell me the news that she was pregnant, my scream was audible, miles away. For the rest of that day, I was in a sated state of mind with a permanent smile on my face. I just couldn’t believe what I had just heard, and even though I always had faith that it would eventually happen, because God doesn’t play with his children’s hearts like that, I still wasn’t expecting what I heard. It had been a good number of years and they had tried everything and I mean EVERYTHING. What fascinated me most with my friend was the smile that was always on her face; it was and is a relentless smile. The situation never dampened her spirit; she attended every birthday of her friend’s kids, joyously, she did her work conscientiously and was always just a fun person to be around.

The strength of character she portrayed even in the face of difficulty; ranging from stupid questions asked by emotionally unintelligent people, to ridiculous insinuations/comments made by family, floored me. A couple of times when she would tell me what someone said to her, I would have lost it completely on her behalf, she would even be the one begging me. I always used to laugh and say to myself, truly, God doesn’t give you what he knows you cannot handle.

I would just like to encourage and lend emotional support to any woman out there who is hoping for a child and it is yet to happen. Best believe it will! I imagine Nigeria must be the worst place on earth to be married and not have a child; our society is brutal I know, but please ignore! Ignore all those rude and distasteful side comments you may hear from people, ignore the strangers that may ask you extremely private and upsetting questions, also ignore the one or two family members that simply do not know how to talk. I know it may be difficult and I know you are anxious but believe in your heart that it will happen and pray to the one who is your father and watch him show you who he is. While you wait on him, please try to maintain a bright outlook; it really does help. Congrats in advance!
