Food business is serious business, and one that’s bound to be around as long as living things exists. However, processes are also bound to change and there’s quite a lot of changes going on the the agricultural world.

Our #BellaNaijaMCM this week Onyeka Akumah is one of those leading this change in Nigeria, and we’re celebrating him today.

Onyeka is the founder and CEO of Farmcrowdy, a digital agriculture platform that empowers rural farmers by providing them with improved seeds, farm inputs, training on modern farming techniques and provides a market for the sale of their farm produce.

The platform connects farm sponsors with farmers and at the end of the day, everyone wins and food security is achieved.

Farmcrowdy gives Nigerians the opportunity to participate in Agriculture by selecting the kind of farms they want to sponsor, then uses their funds to secure the land, engage the farmer, plant the seeds, insure the farmers and farm produce, complete the full farming cycle, and sell the harvest. The sponsor is then paid a return on their sponsorship.

Onyeka has worked his way up to where he is today and we applaud him. He’s been involved in building some of the most successful start-ups in Nigeria either as a marketing leader, founder, or as part of the management team in designing growth strategy.

Onyeka was the Chief Commercial Officer of Travelbeta. He has also worked with Konga as Vice President, Marketing; with Jumia as Director of Marketing & Partnerships; with Wakanow as Online Marketing Manager; with Deloitte E-Marketing Coordinator for West, East and Central Africa; and was Webmaster for British Council in Nigeria.

Farmcrowdy was founded in 2016 and began to gain attention after raising $1m in seed funding in 2017, a huge amount for any African startup at the time.

In 2018, Onyeka was named in Quartz’s list of Africa’s 30 Innovators. He is one of the Top 20 Young Entrepreneurs to Watch in Africa by the African Youth Forum in Egypt.

Onyeka has won the Tech Entrepreneur of the Year in 2017 and 2018 at the Nigeria Technology Awards.

In 2019, The Africa Report named Onyeka in its 100 Most Influential Africans list.

We celebrate Onyeka for using his skills and explains to tackle a pressing challenge in Nigeria, and we’re rooting for him!
