Sweetie let me tell you one truth that even Joan Rivers in all her glory can’t deny; In fashion there are no rules and there is no such thing as a dressing code to this event because if there was don’t you think the attendees would have received it and adhered accordingly? That’s all.

Hello Pot!
How many of those charity causes have you organized or been a part of? Or as you call ’em “meaningful events”. Kindly endeavor to brighten the corner where YOU are and work out YOUR own ‘salvation’ with diligence.
Who are you to call people “fake”. This just irks me to NO end!

Eya…please let’s group-hug temi…she seems a tad angry.
While charity balls and “meaningful events” are ALWAYS a good thing, they can’t be done all day every day. Last time you had yourself a birthday party, or bought yourself that nice pricey outfit, why didn’t you just take all that money and donate to charity? Because life happens in moderation sweetie, ok? Balance has to applied in all things.
Now think happy thoughts and cheer up dear 🙂

iCrossMyheart
April 8, 2013 at 9:19 pm
While your comment is spot on, I have to agree with Temi to an extent. We do not have enough charity causes in Nigeria. If we do, the impact is not obvious. Polo events and such can exist in the UK, Canada, America, etc, because these countries are developed. Nigeria is not well-developed to feed horses instead of children. Those horses you see here are very expensive to maintain. In the States, maintaining a horse can set an individual back $100,000 to $1million depending on the quality of the horse.
One should not also ignore the colonial signifiers in this event. The elitism is so perverse here that it irks me to no avail. Who said colonization has ended? We simply replaced white colonial masters with ones that look like us. See the old white man and young black woman in the picture. Nothing wrong with that, if that is your preference. But I am assuming that the relationship is not balanced and based on money.
So Temi has a point, but then we each have a personal responsibility to effect change. But these people at these events are just benefiting from the malfunctioning system that is Nigeria.

I feel like a lot of these people work hard and should be able to enjoy themselves. Someone made a comment above that there are starving children all over World so don’t complain about Nigeria… Yes, I agree but the ratio at which we have these kids in Africa or Nigeria is just Ridiculous… (Yes, our Population is high) But We as a people can do more by holding our governments accountable….

Polo is a highly glamorous sport. Usually women are dressed to the nines but if you choose to go casual chic, ain’t nothing wrong with that, whatever works for you!
Mo Abudu is fine sha, and aging quite gracefully, she must be on some Botox or vampire shiiii

It’s either Nigerian people at home are bored/ have no where to go or are used to attending the same events- EME/MAVIN concerts, clubbing, weddings, church, and two other types of events. Why in pete’s sake would some people dress like this to a polo tournament- http://cdn.bellanaija.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/IMG_7024.jpg
The same way these women wear their clutch, dress and high heels to see D’Banj/Wizkid at night is the same way they put that sh*t together to attend a game. Where they do that though

Besides, most of the Nigerians I see here are well dressed for the occasion. Those two..they probably got their invitation mixed up or something..lol

April 8, 2013 at 5:10 pm
Sorry o Omo1, so how do Nigerians look? Is it because of their skin tone? Are you going to say Maryam Abacha and some of the people I see especially in the Northern part of Nigeria don’t look Nigerian too? Nigeria is too diverse for its people to have “a look”. Biko stop.
I remember seeing these two ladies at some events because of their ombré hair. There are other girls who are not dressed appropriately to this tournament. Simply put, I see some people struggled with what to wear and said phuck it! I’m wearing this. The photos on Bella show that people wear the same things to different events- Evening gowns to album launch (people have calmed down with that because artistes have their album launch a lot more). I advice us to use our ipads & blackberry phones to google ideas on what to wear to certain events instead of only pinging, and going on social networks.

April 8, 2013 at 5:25 pm
I totally disagree (chei, all it took was a few hours for me to get sucked back by the BN siren call… how am I supposed to make that cheddah oh, if I keep letting this BN distract me??).
The traditional dress code for attending horse races and generally any “horsey” sport is actually quite glam. I’ve been to a couple over the years (not in Lagos, though) and the females tend to bring it in full force, including spiky heels, nice dresses, hats and clutches. As I wasn’t very interested in tottering through horse manure in my nice shoes, the last time I went, I settled on country-casual (i.e. plaid bottoms, a cardi and high-heeled pumps) myself but I felt a bit underdressed at the venue. If I’d gone the way these two are dressed, someone might have mistaken me for a jockey!
Make no mistake, I think your two ladies highlighted above look good, for a different event. However, I would strongly disagree with your assertion that this is how you’re supposed to dress to attend a polo tournament. It’ll fit the bill more if this was Wimbledon or a basketball match. However, like I said above, I haven’t attended this sort of event in Lagos and maybe they’ve created their own dress code (taking the heat into account, for instance).
nike
April 8, 2013 at 6:29 pm
Its not by force that’s just her opinion but your sentence “I’ve been to a couple over the years (not in Lagos, though)” should be all u should have said. ur paragraphs shows u don’t know much of what ur talkin about when it comes to attending a “Lagos” polo tournament. Every polo match is not the same in every continent wearing sky high heels, ballon dresses on sandy manure infested paths in scorching heat isn’t that practical here in Lagos abeg
Mz Socially Awkward...
April 9, 2013 at 5:40 pm
@ Nike… dear aunty, as one person stated her opinion, am I not allowed to state mine? The 1st commenter made this blanket statement: “My people, this is how you attend a polo tournament/ any sport match”.
I merely gave my own rebuttal and I no even cuss pesin inside wetin I talk, just stated the facts as I know them. If the statement was “this is how you dress to a polo tournament in Lagos”, perhaps I for waka pass, afterall didn’t I end my above comment by conceding that it’s possible they’ve created their own dress code in Lagos?
Biko, it is fundamental that you read first before jumping into attack mode.

I TOO KNOW aka ITK… Go watch ‘Pretty Woman’ again if U don watch am before. Polo dressing is not casual dressing… Try that in any major International Polo event and you will not be admitted into the venue. Una wen never even go Abuja let alone London go dey comment.
Polo is the sport of Princes so you don’t dress like a commoner to a Polo event. Those ladies dressed like they were going to a proper Polo event not knowing say na the locokito 9ja version.

It’s always been popular for the enthusiasts and elites but unfortunately(or fortunately for social climbers) the advent of twitter, instagram, blogs etc have made polo events a good place to be seen/noticed. To that extent, people are now using it to “advertise” themselves.

It’s been around for a while. Very common in the north though. It looks like it has now been added to the list of events for the Bella Naija celebrities to attend. Before it was Le Petit Marché but they killed it. There aren’t a lot of things for us to do so this one will be one of the top events for us to look forward to before we completely ruin the vibe. I cannot believe they even had a fashion show.

scroll down and read Morolake’s comments. Its not so much the heels, but the fact that there is no rhyme or reason to how some people dressed.

The original beebee I totally agree with you. I can almost eat her up. According to my friend there are some girls that if you hear your husband cheated on you with them, you would just understand and forgive him immediately. This girl has to be one of them.
Effortlessly pretty and most importantly classy!!

Miss ITK Bunmi on the contrary Zara is not appropriately dressed for the occasion though I think she looks so cool and can pass for 9ja setting. As for you crying that its a fake sport not for 9ja because ordinary people cant afford horses, the sitting area in polo club is very limited so therefore not for ordinary people and this is same everywhere in the world.

Eku Edewor always on point!!!!!!
BN commentators are boring!
April 9, 2013 at 12:05 am
Haven’t seen such clean beaurify, classy pples gather in one event like this! But some how, some way, managebly enough Eku clearly stood out! Still wonder how she always pull it off! Look at her, with simplicity of an outfit(with no boob, ass or hips) she totally rock it! I give it to her….just can’t hide it.

Aww the pics are so amazing. I love beautiful people and light people stick together hehehehe…
But with that said, so of them looked ratched abeg… Yea, polo events are a nice dress, and hat and heels occasion but this busy Nigerian people wear clothes like they have beach appointment, choir practice, weddings and some self funeral … corporal nonsense.. the usual

Whoever Anon is..I think you need some orientation on posting stuffs on social media! You do not just go about criticizing and picking on people that are anonymous and just saying things on assumption. First You accused me of hyping myself cos i admired another girl’s look ..very dumb!..then I recall you calling someone a village girl..Hian! you must be a first class wannabe local champion..lolllz!

As for the commenters on charity over polo tournament: PARK WELL, GO SLEEP U BE LEARNER!!! MSCHIEEWT!!!
