Did you Know? Nigerians watch more Internet Porn than Americans! | Labo Daniel Speaks to Subomi Plumptre on a New Episode of “Conversations with Labo”

Published

 on

Show Host Labo Daniel had quite the interesting interview with Omawumi last week and she’s out with a new episode of ‘Conversations with Labo’!

On Episode 2 of she ‎had an insightful conversation on Porn Culture in Nigeria with Subomi Plumptre, a social media strategist.

Subomi said, “Nigeria has overtaken the USA in terms of searches for porn”, while explaining that we are unaware of the porn issues because we don’t measure things and don’t respect data in this part of the world.

Labo had to exclaim saying “If I didn’t see the stats, and know you were a data analyst, there is no way I can believe that Nigeria’s appetite for pornography (internet) is higher than the United States of America, no way”

Labo and Subomi also talked about about how Nigeria is the country with the 3rd largest viewership of Gay porn in the world, AND.. wait for it…. Enugu State leads the pack of Nigerian states viewing Gay porn.

Shocking right? This is not even half of it. Watch to get all the details:

LMAOOOOO! IF I start to Talk!!! THE numbers don’t lie. Hypocrisy in that country is rotten. As I always say, it’s a lot closer to home than you think! Shekini! As in, I Laugh Into into The Future. Smh. The sad part is most of them are probably married with kids and living in misery because their fellow country men will burn them alive if they ever came out. Africans, holding sticks and stones in one hand, and the bible in the other. Christianity/Islam are the worse thing that ever happened to that continent and until we realize that, we’ll always remain the bottom of the barrel. Thesame people that were blaspheming the muslim guy a few months back for killing his sister are thesame ones that will kill stone their own brothers to death. I’ve never experienced a more backwards thinking people than my own, and it’s truly sad. Now oya, go and kill your brothers and sons and then come and whine about how the government isn’t dong anything to curb Boko Haram and every other terrorist organisation. It’s sad when the average person on the street IS the terrorist. Africa has fallen.

This is the difference between data and information.

Yes, there was a ‘Google Trends’ mockup that placed Nigeria in 3rd for searches of ‘gay sex pics’ but Google Trends does not portray the raw level of queries for a given search item. Substitute that particular term with any other gay porn search and Nigeria is nowhere to be found at the top. So is it that everybody who looks for gay porn in nigera googles that particular term?
Even when Nigeria is found (on that singular search item), it is just Lagos that is seen. Enugu is not even among the top five states in Nigeria in terms of internet penetration, yet I’m expected to believe they watch internet porn more than others.
Google Trends is a not a substitute for carrying out proper research. Proper peer-reviewed research, not some rubbish that you see on Google.

Your ignorance is on steroids. Abeg have some decency
I’ve have seen the link in the video. It leads to an article on Subomi’s blog. I have seen the PDF file where she states the ‘information’ and she presented some graphs. I didn’t mean to disparage Subomi, that’s why I left her out
My point still stands: it is just data mined from Google Trends that is not equivalent to proper peer-reviewed research. .75% of the PDF is not directly related to the ‘study’ she is quoting; just her personal thoughts. Even the data is so sketchy. She can’t come to any serious conclusion from stuff like that.

Let me pretend you even looked at the article and let me pretend the data she’s quoting is actually correct
Line A: States with the greatest popularity of porn search (from highest to low) – Enugu, Oyo, e.t.c
Line B: Nigeria ranked third globally for the most Google searches for gay porn.
Bellanaija interprets that as Enugu leads the pack of Nigerian states viewing gay porn. How?
That’s conflation of two different pieces of data and the end can only be misinformation.

      In summary, gtfoh

I love the mature discussion of both speakers in this program. They hit the nail on the head, unemployment, poverty, sexual frustration. You find porn when you have time and when it’s free and unregulated. In a country where under 40s sexually ripe make up the larger proportion, unlike the ageing population of the west, who have been there and done ‘invented porn’ that in the swinging 60’s….then it makes absolute sense that there porn consumption is lower. Furthermore these sexually ripe, frustrated, unemployed, depressed youth have time and access to porn, unregulated by government, thus Nigeria is in deep trouble. Body image perception, sexual expression and practice is being taught by studios in the west, anal sex and oral sex with increased risk of stds. Also deviant sexual behaviour as people get desensitised to ‘boring virgin’ porn…in fact, it may be interesting to find that aside from gay porn, bestiality and paedophilic consumption may be on the rise, the latter being limited by regulation in the west, requiring dark web, the right community and expense of streaming it.
Give youths job, regulate the Internet and please let’s talk about sex, all the good things and bad things!! I mean in an overtly sexual nation like Nigeria, when you know randy uncles and aunties from childhood memories and then you realise when you grew up that they were only 14 and 16…!

this right here is a lie.

There are so many ways to mask your IP address so its seems you’re surfing from another country. Used it on pandora a couple of times. They have laws over there. enforceable ones so they go to extremes to protect themselves. google tor browser and the dark web and you’ll see how really perverse americans can be. They just hide it better because they know they can be charged. google VPN, hidemyass. These are american softwares made for americans.

Infact I have so many ways to counter this argument… Wait sef izzit the nigeria where there’s no light? lemme just stop here.

    • Udegbunam Chukwudi

      August 4, 2016 at 6:38 am

@LemmeRant in all my years of using multiple VPN services, I’ve never seen one with Nigerian servers so this your theory of Americans browsing for gay porn with Nigerian IP get k-leg too.

Besides you don’t need VPN to access most free porn websites unless they’ve been outrightly banned in your country of residence

    • le coco

      August 4, 2016 at 6:47 am

actually I disagree with you @lemme rant, on the issue of hiding the IP address…. that cant prove that the west watches more porn… there isn’t really a stigma to watching porn in the west… in America they are very free with such things.. this is why their porn industry is booming.. so americans or other westerns really have no reason to go to great lengths to hide their ip address all because of porn. often times when people hide their IP address its when they are doing something illegal that they don’t need a trace

    • LemmeRant

      August 4, 2016 at 10:20 am

Ok guys, I’ll just like to respond and clarify some things.

About the VPN. My argument was not about people faking Nigeria’s IP but masking their own. @lecoco yes their are laws. I work in IT and if not for that, i wouldn’t have known the things i know now. Some of which i wish i never knew (and No I won’t be the one to tell you.) Their a lot of crazy stuff going out there especially online and i can tell you porn is actually one the better perversions.

Now to the main reason i blatantly disagree is that in my line of business getting online penetration is our biggest issue. Is it the expensive data service or the terrible network or the fact that there is no power when u have both.

Aside from the elite of Lagos metropolis and some other emerging states how many nigerians even know of websites. Infact sef how many cities do we have sef that wants to surpass the US of A. Haba?

I have no doubt that we’re no1 in africa, but more than Americans?, It is a lie.

Its is no secret that the vast majority of Nigerians are hypocrites! Most married men have side chicks yet they go to church on sunday to “pay tithes”.Their wives who married men they dont love because society told them they are getting old are not left out having boy toys as well. And for those that say they dont believe the gay porn data please stop the ignorance.I schooled in uniport I knew lots of gays and lesbians.I even knew 2 lesbians that were engaged to men! Gays have been living in plain sight for decades. We all have that aunty and uncle that is over 40 and refuses to get married but have a “good friend” from way back!
Bottom line is human beings are basically the same.Every society has gays, fornicators, adulteres etc. Not too long ago it was taboo to say you were having premarital sex now its a non-issue. We Nigerians like to feel we are more pious than other countries when the truth is we are just better at hiding and pretending!
Its only in Nigeria that statstics “lie” when they are negative. If they are positive its accurate as can be.Had america or any other “immoral” western country been at the top of the porn list then we will believe! Please make I hear word jo.

You can’t be charged for porn. If porn was illegal, it would be taken down from the top and it won’t be free for all like this. Everyone knows the address of Vivid Entertainment. Kim K and Ray J gets a check from them every month!

You have been reading too much Brian Krebs blog is why you are talking of Tor. Tor is strictly for criminals who do banking virus, CEO fraud, tax return fraud and what have you. You won’t be using Tor just because you want to watch porn. I doubt!

If you were to however set up a botnet to control thousands of computers of people, would you run it on a naked network that mtn or Glo provided? That’s where Tor and vpn comes in. 90% of vpn users are criminals.

i think thats it oo.. a lot of the nigerians who live outside of nigeria. and have lived outside for years tend to think Nigeria is what the west says we are.. nothing is revered in nigeria more than data/ internet… even market women have it… people who struggle to pay rent will make sure that there i data on their phones come hell or high water. so when you have men who are addicted to gay porn, they will make sure they buy data even if its only for tht soul purpose.

Ok. So this is gonna be my last on this topic

Population of Nigeria: 173.6 million people as of 2013 (this was before boko haram)

Population of USA 323,442,019 million as of 2016.

Even if all Nigerians including the women, children, babies and those living in Villages you’ve never heard of (don’t believe me? Try NYSC) and yes pastors watch porn religiously and and only 60% of Americans watch porn ever (you wonder why the industry doesn’t just move to Nigeria. At least they should know their market) That is still more than us.

This is what happens when we don’t carry out our research. Whatever figures we’re given, we take.

Stop being in a haste to defame your country.

Keep ranting but most Nigerians watch porn. Go to Ajangbadi, Isale Eko, Makoko, everyone has a phone with Internet. And a vast majority of them watch porn. Didn’t you watch the Battabox videos on Nigerians favorite sex positions? Where do you think their ideas came from? Ask someone who works with Glo or Spectranet. People that live in Banana, Ojuelegba, my Igbo village and Surulere have one thing in common- they have phones with Internet. Ie they can access porn. There are over 1 billion porn websites online, and most of them are free and easy to access

    • LemmeRant

For instance a sample of 1 million Americans or Nigerians could have been used. So before you so called patriots and defenders of Nigeria come with your flawed arguments, know how stats work.
We accept all other stats from Google etc so why is this one now false, is it because it exposes our obvious hypocricy?

    August 4, 2016 at 3:22 pm

As a surveillance data analyst and epidemiologist myself, i know that there is such a thing as ‘confounding’ in data analysis. So until i see proof that this analysis controlled for all existing potential confounders in the association between being/living in Nigeria and watching gay porn, then the results are highly statistically flawed. period!!!

  20. Vivian

    August 4, 2016 at 3:26 pm

…like someone rightly pointed out above, the denominator/population size is a very important factor to be considered when comparing statistical rates or prevalence. No one is saying that Nigerians don’t watch porn gay porn…but to say that the prevalence or rate of watching gay porn in Nigeria is higher than that of USA is highly statistically improbable.

    • Really?

      August 4, 2016 at 6:54 pm

Sigh. Go and analyse the data then, since it’s your work. Nigerians do not take responsibility for anything but someone does the work and you will be coming out to claim expert. And. for a researcher, you clearly don’t pay attention to detail 3rd largest gay porn searcher on the one hand and then searches more porn than the US on the other

      August 4, 2016 at 6:57 pm

What nonsense is this one talking?.

This is not about being emotional or not. This is about people coughing up data and Nigerians agreeing with it. Go back to @lemmerant’s comment on the population difference – I’m assuming you’re also Nigerian meaning even if they add you to all the numbers of porn watchers in Nigeria including babies and children. and they pick just 60% of americans, that’s still more than us. America’s population almost double ours. How is that so difficult to reason with.

    • The Bull

      August 4, 2016 at 7:37 pm

google search “Population Sampling” educate yourself and stop ranting. how do you think statistics work? you think they sample every human in that city or country?

So we are meant to believe that Google or America has an agenda to make Nigeria more immoral than theirs by feeding us false stats. Maybe our morally superior country should stop relying on others for our own stats then.

    • Why are you dumb like this

      August 4, 2016 at 7:49 pm

      @The Bull

Even if it is a sample. What do you think the “population” sample is based on? Isn’t it ultimately based on the population. Isn’t it a sample of the existing population? If you were to take a sample from a country of 170million and a sample from a country of 320million. Which sample would be higher. Your argument is that we have believed other data (which is totally false by the way) but don;t believe this.

Mr bull tell me how does that make this one any truer. You’ve not provided any evidence, you’ve not analysed anything. You’re just saying we’ve believed thus far (Again that is not true) and we must believe this time. Mr. IT is that your reasoning?

Sample ko sample ni. Asif america’s sample was taken from monks and priests shior.

    • The Bull

      August 4, 2016 at 10:59 pm

can you prove that the other data is totally false and can you provide true data? you cannot.
So we are meant to ignore data from Google because a butt hurt BN commenter says it is false.
Provide your own data to counter their own. It is not rocket science that hypocricy is a Nigerian, wether we have data or not, i do not know the reason for your tears.

You are asking me to provide evidence i do not need to, i trust the data from google you that does not trust it prove to me that it is false. you cannot, you do not even understand statistics or google analytics. stop being confident in your ignorance and enlighten yourself.

    • IT guy too

      August 5, 2016 at 4:31 am

Since you believe so much in google’s data and you claim to be an IT guy.

I’m sure you know google isn’t the only search engine used by most americans. Infact Yahoo search and Bing are one of the most used search engines in America because of this exact reason you’re arguing here. (that is their online activity not being part of a statistic)

      http://www.ebizmba.com/articles/search-engines

What the data you’ve chosen to accept proves is that nigerians use Google more than Americans use Google. So many times Americans have complained about google this. Infact search engines like DuckDuckGo rose up for this very reason.

All in all a lot of arguments have been put forward. Do I believe Nigerians watch porn a lot? Hell Yes. Do they do it more than the Americans? Nope.

    • Agama

Google is the most used search Engine on planet earth, they have more data than any of those sites you mentioned.

If a guy cannot freely go to a strip or gay club because society will judge and condemn him, he/she will most likely turn to porn in private.

I believe it. Nigerians are a pretentious, sanctimonious and overly deluded bunch. They like to pretend that they are holy. We see it with people that steal to give tithes so other’s will think that they are so holy God favored them. We see it in fake pastors and imams. Even the self acclaimed Boko Haram camp cannot do without sex and drugs. Yet they are killing people for vices they indulge in and are addicted to. Nigerians will be the first to shout about nudity and preach but they have the highest number of condom users and are the biggest cheats according to some study. Please non of your presences is convincing and no one cares.
