The African Union (AU) has congratulated Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari following his declaration as winner of the February 23 presidential election.
The chairperson of the union, Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed optimism in a statement on the union’s website that the remainder of the elections will be peaceful.
Mahamat restated that the 2019 general elections have been largely peaceful while also commending INEC for its conduct of the election.
“Following the announcement made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Feb. 27, AU congratulates President Muhammadu Buhari for winning the presidential election,” Moussa Faki Mahamat said in the statement.
“The union wishes President Buhari and the people of Nigeria success in efforts to build a peaceful, stable and prosperous country.”
Mahamat said the peaceful conduct of the elections has strengthened the country’s democracy.
